To ask if you support the proposed strike by Nursing and Midwifery staff?

For the first time in I think 32 years nursing staff have voted to go on strike and midwives, having never voted to strike in their history will be joining them in a four hour walkout from 7am on 13th October.

The NHS pay review recommended a 1% pay rise across the board, yet government decided they could ignore this and only award the rise to those at the top of their band and would take it away again next year. Despite awarding themselves an 11% pay rise after proclaiming they couldn't possibly ignore their review bodies recommendation.

Essential services will still be covered, eg Delivery suite, ITU etc.

Do you support the staff? If you are a frontline healthcare worker will you be striking? I'm not due to work that day but I will be at the picket line showing my support.

I absolutely support them. It's disgusting that they are not receiving the pay they are more than deserving of.

FrOZenKidS · 30/09/2014 13:47

fully support them, they should be on 5x their salaries as far as I'm concerned.
(slightly Confused tho as I gave birth at 9am on the 13th 2yrs ago so would've been abit stumped without them! I'm assuming that there will be sufficient support/cover in place yeah?)

deakymom · 30/09/2014 13:50

fully support the staff and seriously hoping no one gets hurt on the day because that will give people a stick to beat them with

Lorelei353 · 30/09/2014 13:51

I very very rarely support strikes but this one I totally do. It's outrageous that such a small pay rise is being disregarded. Does the NHS need more funding? Absolutely. But underpaying staff who do a vital and incredibly tough job is not how to do it.

ebwy · 30/09/2014 13:52

likely to have appointments missed/reorganised as a result.. and still supporting them!

Lottapianos · 30/09/2014 13:53

Fully support them. I'm a HCP and I admire them standing up for themselves. They get described as 'angels' which always makes me puke - they're not angels, they are extremely overworked, poorly paid professionals with bills and mortgages/rent just like the rest of us

x2boys · 30/09/2014 13:55

Yep I,m a nurse I hope it does some good just read the paper the proposals to close the 50 mental health h beds has now been accepted as it will save the trust £2 000000 over two years they make no mention of the mi!lions they have spent doing up the wards they are now closing down less than two years ago I hate how the managers distort the truth!

BaffledSomeMore · 30/09/2014 13:56

Yes I do.

dinkystinky · 30/09/2014 13:56

I 100% support it - Lottapianos, for what its worth, I don't think that the HCPs across the board get the recognition and pay that they deserve for doing vital jobs

attheendoftheday · 30/09/2014 13:56

I'll be on strike, unless my ward will absolutely fall to pieces. I think the trust will just have to employ expensive bank or agency staff to cover, so my patients will be ok.

I'd almost prefer they gave no one a rise than the suggestion of giving it to top increments, but only for one year. It is so divisive. You would end up with two nurses doing the same job on the same increment with different pay.

Drania · 30/09/2014 13:57

Yes, definitely support them. I hope they get the outcome they desire from it.

picnicbasketcase · 30/09/2014 13:58

Yes I do, it's a difficult and demanding job that should be recognised as such.

x2boys · 30/09/2014 13:59

My confused point being yes the NHS needs more money but the general public don't see how much money is wasted everyday with their mind boggling stupidity in managing finances! And they still don't want to give us a paltry payrise!

TheFairyCaravan · 30/09/2014 13:59

I fully support the strikes.

I am absolutely sick to the back teeth of this government, they haven't said they can't afford their own pay increase have they? I wish DH and DS1 could strike!

SeattleGraceMercyDeath · 30/09/2014 14:00

Really heartening to read the support. I don't htink any of us actually want to walk out and we certainly don't want any harm to come to patients but no one else is going to stand up for us, we have to fight back. Pay freeze in place since 2010 which has resulted in an 8-10% pay cut in real terms has left many of us struggling and having to take on bank work just to make ends meet. 1% isn't going to change that, but it would go a small way to making us feel valued by the government.

The NHS has whittled away at its staff for years now, there gets to a point where it will all collapse.

Staff leave, not replaced.
More and more work piled on.
Patient expectations higher.
Below rate of inflation pay increases.
The increase in the retirement age (is it now 67? )
Increase in Pension contributions but decrease in payout.

Is it Midwives and Nurses or other HCP as well?

(On the 13th, I aim to be in Post Surgical recovery, but will be there in spirit)

millionsofpeaches · 30/09/2014 14:05

I support the strikes wholeheartedly. I think it's utterly disgusting that MPs can vote themselves massive pay rises and yet treat front line essential workers with such contempt.

SaskiaRembrandtWasFramed · 30/09/2014 14:05

I'll be supporting them.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 30/09/2014 14:06

Oh, and listening to the propsed "You will be able to see your GP 8am-8pm , 7 days"

Where will that funding come from?
Closure of A&E I suspect Angry

Raconteurs · 30/09/2014 14:08

Yes, I support the strike

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 30/09/2014 14:08

I am generally not in favour of strikes but I do think this one is justified. The pay review body is there for a reason and its findings should be respected.

Lorelei353 · 30/09/2014 14:11

1% is hardly a lot to ask.

Futurebird · 30/09/2014 14:14

I could cry at how many people are saying they support this! I assumed you'd all say we were evil. I'm on a day off but will be heading in to show my support.

SeattleGraceMercyDeath · 30/09/2014 14:16

Ditto Futurebird.
