To ask if you support the proposed strike by Nursing and Midwifery staff?

SeattleGraceMercyDeath · 30/09/2014 13:35

For the first time in I think 32 years nursing staff have voted to go on strike and midwives, having never voted to strike in their history will be joining them in a four hour walkout from 7am on 13th October.

The NHS pay review recommended a 1% pay rise across the board, yet government decided they could ignore this and only award the rise to those at the top of their band and would take it away again next year. Despite awarding themselves an 11% pay rise after proclaiming they couldn't possibly ignore their review bodies recommendation.

Essential services will still be covered, eg Delivery suite, ITU etc.

Do you support the staff? If you are a frontline healthcare worker will you be striking? I'm not due to work that day but I will be at the picket line showing my support.

Of course.

Anyone who works in the public sector deserves our support and I'm behind them all the way.

ShakesBootyFlabWobbles · 30/09/2014 17:17

No I 100% don't support the strike by nurses and midwives. Even more so for firefighters.

It will achieve sod all.

icclemunchy · 30/09/2014 17:19

Absolutely 100% support them.

every member of staff I've come across both In this pregnancy and the last have been amazing, going above and beyond.

We see them often skipping lunch because the clinic has twice as many patients as appointments but they won't turn women away. And despite all the pressure they're always happy and smiling and never hesitate to explain something or reassure you.

Worth their weight in gold!

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 30/09/2014 17:27

Another supporter here, they're getting stiffed by the government, I wouldn't be happy if it was me either.

I hope they get their hugely unreasonable grand total of 1%! (notice how the MP's got their 1% already in April this year and they still want more...)

PetulaGordino · 30/09/2014 17:32

Shakesbooty what would be an effective alternative?

Orangeisthenewbanana · 30/09/2014 17:36

As another healthcare professional, they obviously have my 100% support. Our union will probably be balloting to strike in the next few months so see you on the picket line hopefully!

maddy68 · 30/09/2014 17:42

Fully support them, and the teachers and anyone else in public service. They have been screwed over time after time.

Pigriver · 30/09/2014 17:48

I absolutely support this. 1% is nothing and far less than what they deserve.
No doubt the government with use the strike as propaganda against the nurses and midwives just like they did against the teachers.
Eroding the professionalism of key workers in out society seems to be the main aim if this government...

TheFairyCaravan · 30/09/2014 17:51

DS1 is just coming to the end of his Army phase 1 training. He has gone with out kit, like a pair of boots, for 8 weeks, they have had to buy some of their own essential kit, it has really shocked DH and I. It is completely different to when DH signed up 27 years ago.

I never used to support strikes, but if anyone said they were going out in the public sector right now I'd back them. This Government treats every single one of them with contempt, it is shocking and it is not on. I am surprised we aren't all protesting in the streets tbh!

Time for a biscuit I agree but I still don't support the strike.

MoominKoalaAndMiniMoom · 30/09/2014 18:25

Full support for the strike. Don't understand how anyone can not support it without offering alternatives for what they could do.

chiliplant · 30/09/2014 18:28

Absolutely support the strike. I think its the media who have focussed on the pay. My friend is a mid wife and she says it mainly about wanting more midwives in the suites for safety reasons.x

Dawndonnaagain · 30/09/2014 18:29

100% support from this household.

thatsnotmyusername · 30/09/2014 18:42

Midwives have an increasing workload, pregnancies are becoming increasing complex. Services are already over streched. Working over (unpaid) after shifts, missing breaks, not even haviing chance to go to the loo or grab a drink. Its not just about pay - its about the saftey of women and babies.

The pressure they are under is immense. They have been having thier value and pay eroded for a while now. 100000000% support this. (and i say this knowing essential service are going to be maintained)

MadameJosephine · 30/09/2014 18:44

Thank you, thank you, thank you to all those who have posted such supportive comments, it really means a lot. I am a midwife and it was with a very heavy heart that I ticked the yes box on my ballot form and believe me a strike is the last thing I want to do but I really feel we have no option.

LadyLuck81 · 30/09/2014 18:50

I definitely support them and I'm currently in the latter stages of pregnancy. From what I've read they aren't putting frontline delivery services at risk and our nurses, midwives and other HCPs most definitely deserve to receive a pay rise. I don't care that I've not had a rise in years either, I'm not responsible for looking after people who are vulnerable.

I really hope it leads to s change in their decision.

NCIS · 30/09/2014 18:53

Paramedics have a starting salary of 26597.5 before any deductions. How can anyone think that's a decent salary for all the things that they are trained to do, and do on a daily basis, I don't know.

It's the first time I have ever agreed with a strike for all frontline NHS workers, it seems it is the only way to get people to listen. After all it worked for tube drivers.
Governments, both present and previous, don't take any notice of anything else.

Viviennemary · 30/09/2014 18:56

I don't know enough about the payscales to decide whether or not I support them. But I expect they have thought very carefully before voting to go on strike.

Slowdownsally · 30/09/2014 18:57

Absolutely and any other public sector worker who felt the same. Massive job cuts leaving organisations short staffed and struggling, a SEVEN year pay freeze, and poor working conditions.

It's a national disgrace the way out public services are being decimated with more cuts to come whilst the bankers, big corporations and the millionaires in the cabinet take virtually no hit at all.

Been watching Hong Kong with interest. Might it spur the uk on?

Viva la revolution!

HaPPy8 · 30/09/2014 18:58

Paramedics start on 21,476 before deductions NCIS so its worse than that!

I fully support the strike but i doubt very much the government will give two hoots.

Mrsstarlord · 30/09/2014 19:02

I believe that Unison are also striking on that day. Supporter here!

NCIS · 30/09/2014 19:02

They do but I included the 25% unsocial hours allowance to be absolutely fair.

tattyteddy · 30/09/2014 19:03

Totally support the strike. It's very sad that workers across the public sector aren't being listened too and feel like striking is the only option open to them. I'm really worried about what is happening to our NHS

velocity1 · 30/09/2014 19:05

Absolutely support them 100%
