I don't know if there really has been more of it lately or if I'm just getting more sensitive. I really dislike it when women are referred to as 'hag', 'cow', 'bag' or 'witch' and so on.
I find it particularly jarring when these words are used by other women.
Am I alone ?

Why? Muppets are made out of felt and stuffing.

kali110 · 30/09/2014 15:25

Not really offended personally by the words.
Me and my dp often call each other names jokingly.
I also had no idea that name was homophobic.
As for the poster shouting cocksucker out the window, I'm in a hetrosexual relationship and can say iv never done it!

PoirotsMoustache · 30/09/2014 15:30

I don't tend to call other people names, just myself, but I'm not sure how 'hag', 'cow' and 'witch' can be sexist? They are names for female versions of 'things' - hag vs. codger, cow vs. bull and witch vs. warlock or wizard (although this latter is actually incorrect, as witches can be male or female).

So, basically, what Pootles said!

Hakluyt · 30/09/2014 15:47

"don't tend to call other people names, just myself, but I'm not sure how 'hag', 'cow' and 'witch' can be sexist? They are names for female versions of 'things' - hag vs. codger, cow vs. bull and witch vs. warlock or wizard "

Because men are regularly described as "codgers" "bulls" and "warlocks" in a dismissive way, aren't they?

Well, codgers is used in a dismissive way about old men- but we're into ageism rather than sexism there, aren't we?

Hakluyt · 30/09/2014 15:48

"Often it's by other women, as you say, so how can it be sexist? "

A sexist comment remains sexist whoever says it!

PoirotsMoustache · 30/09/2014 15:51

A git is a foolish or worthless person.

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 30/09/2014 15:57

I know what a muppet is Grin

But its used to mean stupid/idiot and muppets are not that, so must relate more to what it means in usage than what it is

Hakluyt Fair point. They are called 'bastards' 'wankers' 'tossers' 'cunts' and 'twats' though, which women generally aren't, despite it being possible for women to be the first 2. And obviously women have the latter!

So in general, females are called female-specific insulting names, and males are called either non-gender specific names, or female genitalia.

ouryve · 30/09/2014 16:14

I like twatwaffle. Not so much the female genitalia as the unpleasant crusty bits you don't ever want.

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 30/09/2014 16:17

Bit close to bluewaffle though, surely? Wink

Enjoying my new job of critiquing insults!

ouryve · 30/09/2014 16:17

How on earth is Muppet SN related? Confused

ithoughtofitfirst · 30/09/2014 16:17

Twatwaffle omg that's amazing.

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 30/09/2014 16:20

Not because it actually is ouryve, just because it is used to mean stupid. Sorry, my posts are meant to be read as a little tongue in cheek, that may not be clear...!

ElephantsNeverForgive · 30/09/2014 16:24

Bitch is the one I use and probably shouldn't, but we all know one.

The sort of woman who always has an eye on going up the peer group ladder and is not only happy to put other women down, but obviously enjoys it.

I'm certain there is in business and in men's friendship groups a male equivalent. Fortunately I don't have to deal with any.

PigletJohn · 30/09/2014 16:26

Poirot

The man's a prick. A real knob. A bell-end. He's talking bollocks. His last job was a real balls-up. He's just cocked-up again. What a dick-head.

PigletJohn · 30/09/2014 16:29

An American man can be called a Motherfucker

(I believe the correct response is "not any more, and anyway, it was only the once")

ItIsSmallerOnTheOutside · 30/09/2014 16:36

I don't like when people say "man up" but equally dislike "woman up". "Human up" would be ridiculous. I need to think of a good equivalent.

I hate the word "bitch", and variants of. Funny how men are never bitchy about anyone even when they share the views of their "bitchy" female counterpart.

You rarely find a male slag, whore, slapper or sket, either.

MadBannersAndCopPorn · 30/09/2014 16:53

Fucker...

What has M. Poirot done to you Piglet? Smile

TortoiseUpATreeAgain · 30/09/2014 17:03

"its used to mean stupid/idiot and muppets are not that"

Did you ever watch the original Muppet Show? Grin

Although I think that "muppet" is more subtle than that -- it's not really about basic intelligence but about not thinking through the consequences of your actions, which is pretty much the plot of every episode of the (original, haven't watched any reboots if there have been some) Muppet Show ever.

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 30/09/2014 17:04

Pft, well i think the muppets are awesome

TortoiseUpATreeAgain · 30/09/2014 17:06

Awesome, but not precisely known for their sober and reflective approach to life's challenges Grin

Didactylos · 30/09/2014 20:04

wank badger is my favourite

though possibly speciesist or Mustelidaephobic or something
