to let my baby lick the bin?

My 10 month old crawled up to our kitchen bin this afternoon, and as it is mirrored she likes looking at herself in it. I was filming her talking to her reflection, as it was very cute! She then licked the bin a few times, and was giggling at the feel of the cold metal. I sent my dh the video, thinking he would find it funny and he's had a go at me! He said that the germs on it could seriously harm her, and that I am clueless. Obviously I don't intend on letting her make licking the bin a habbit, but was ibu to let her lick the bin?! I suspect after writing it down that I was!

Yabu...it is disgusting. I'm not surprised your husband was angry. How will your baby know the difference between the kitchen bin and a bin in the street?

AdmitYouKnowImRight · 29/09/2014 17:25

That kind of depends really. How often do you wash your bin? What is in it? it really isnt going to do her any harm unless you habitually smear your bin in dog shit and chicken carcass

vestandknickers · 29/09/2014 17:26

I think you know the answer to this one! Grin

Your husband is right!

notnowbernard · 29/09/2014 17:26

Your dh is being OTT

I would have laughed also

But would definitely try and make it a 'once only' event. Bin-licking IS a bit gross, after all...

notnowbernard · 29/09/2014 17:27

LOL at random babies crawling up streets in search of bins to lick

donkir · 29/09/2014 17:27

Wait until she starts exploring the garden and picking up mud and leaves. My lo loves slugs and snails. My belief is that if you get them used to germs (normal household) at an early age then they are less likely to be sicky children.
I can't see how the outside of your bin is any more dirty than her plastic toys in her toy box.

IHaveBrilloHair · 29/09/2014 17:28

Meh, no big deal, at that age they put all sorts in their mouth.

Fabulassie · 29/09/2014 17:28

It's no worse than any other household surface. She wasn't licking inside the lid but instead the shiny outside, presumably down at baby-face level.

I don't see the outrage.

AdmitYouKnowImRight · 29/09/2014 17:29

It's one of those things that happens.

donkir · 29/09/2014 17:30

She's also crawling on the floor and putting her hands on her mouth and unless you Hoover or mop every 5 mins or hover over her with antibacterial wipes she's going to get germs.

Bulbasaur · 29/09/2014 17:31

He's going to have a rough time when she's a toddler and eating bugs, dirt, and all manner of things that should never be eaten.

Obviously it's not going to kill her, and it probably won't even make her sick. But as long as it doesn't become a habit, you're probably fine. I'd start just gently telling her "We don't lick the garbage bin honey" and guide her towards appropriate things to lick. Like Popsicles.

notnowbernard · 29/09/2014 17:31

wait until she eats her own shit

ithoughtofitfirst · 29/09/2014 17:32

admit that made me lol

My mum goes apeshit when my ds runs his hand along any railing.

DON'T LET HIM DO THAT WHAT ABOUT BIRD POOOOOOO reaching for baby wipes, hand sanitizer and spitting into a tissue simultaneouly.

Yanbu. Just as a one off though, yeah?

MintyChops · 29/09/2014 17:32

I wouldn't worry about it, I regularly catch the dogs licking my kids' mouths which has got to be worse but, yet, they are never ill......

AmItheonlyonezenaroundhere · 29/09/2014 17:32

My DS tried to lick the dog today

Minikievs · 29/09/2014 17:33

I wouldn't exactly be thrilled, but I'd probably have videoed too if it was cute. Then pulled her away and kept an eye on any future bin licking antics

secretreveleater · 29/09/2014 17:39

she will lick worse things

bumblebag · 29/09/2014 17:40

YANBU

There was a documentary on bbc recently about how children this generation do not have the correct bacteria in their guts due to all this dettol / anal hygiene bollocks and allergies are prevalent because of this lack of the right bacteria.

It's also been found that children who grow up with dogs have far better immune systems than those that don't. ie : germs are IMPORTANT for our children.

not only that, it was the OUTSIDE of a bin. I really do not understand the hysteria. Tell your DH to stop being such a twit.

wantacatplease · 29/09/2014 17:47

Ridiculous. She'll put far worse things in her mouth!

roofio87 · 29/09/2014 17:50

my 11 month old also loves to kiss his own reflection on our kitchen bin. I don't encourage it, but I also don't have enough minutes in the day or hands to stop him from doing everything I would rather he didn't. It isn't the worst thing in the world!

Marmiteandjamislush · 29/09/2014 17:50

YANBU kids need germs. I have to say though I am more than a bit curious about what your DH may be putting in the bin that is so dangerous.

WanderingTrolley1 · 29/09/2014 17:51

I'm sure it won't hurt her - she'll put plenty of unsavoury things in her mouth in the next few years.

Your DP is being a bit precious.

lettertoherms · 29/09/2014 17:52

Your DH is being ridiculous.

caravanista13 · 29/09/2014 17:55

When my son learned to roll, he would repeatedly roll across the room until he could suck the (very patient!) dog's tail. That's when I decided to give up sterilising!

minidisco · 29/09/2014 18:05

Ha ha I feel less like a slummy mummy now!
