to let my baby lick the bin?

My 10 month old crawled up to our kitchen bin this afternoon, and as it is mirrored she likes looking at herself in it. I was filming her talking to her reflection, as it was very cute! She then licked the bin a few times, and was giggling at the feel of the cold metal. I sent my dh the video, thinking he would find it funny and he's had a go at me! He said that the germs on it could seriously harm her, and that I am clueless. Obviously I don't intend on letting her make licking the bin a habbit, but was ibu to let her lick the bin?! I suspect after writing it down that I was!

Sola I have an image of your baby sticking his tongue out as the number 34 hurtles past

BlessedAssurance · 29/09/2014 20:33

Op, the only unreasonable thing you did was to send the video to your DH. As for the binlicking baby, she will be fine. Where i come from licking a bin is tame. There is lizard eating, cow dung eating, cockroach and fly eating that goes on before you get the chance to say don't touch that. I am still here:)

BlessedAssurance · 29/09/2014 20:34

That being said please don't let your baby lick the bin. It's not just nice.

BlessedAssurance · 29/09/2014 20:35

Just not nice i meant to say

Solasum · 29/09/2014 20:44

Stealth if wish that was what he did! On a few occasions I have thought he was gazing out of the bus window, then realised he is suspiciously quiet, and that actually he is sucking the window ledge or worse the hand rail. Bleuurrgh. He is never ill anymore, though!

formerbabe · 29/09/2014 20:48

formerbabe I just wish I had eyes up my arse like you. Fancy just nipping for a piss or turning to wash the dishes. I wish I was as fucking perfect as you. No need to be so judgemental at all.

No need to be so rude. No one can watch their child every second and of course children will touch/lick dirt every now and then. I object to the tone if this thread, that if you stop your child chewing on toilets/eating from a dog bowl/licking a dog etc then you are being pfb or a helicopter parent!

BastardGoDarkly · 29/09/2014 20:59

Funny, that's not the tone I'm seeing at all Confused

LST · 29/09/2014 21:00

I have never let my child do those things. I stopped them as soon as i realised what was happening. Your tone came across as anyone who has had a child do those things are a lesser parent than you.

LST · 29/09/2014 21:01

That was for formerbabe

formerbabe · 29/09/2014 21:05

It's not the ops fault her baby licked the bin, but in my opinion, you stop them straightaway. LST, I think perhaps we actually agree on that?

MrsMook · 29/09/2014 21:19

Ds2 is a disgusting human dustbin. Also incredibly healthy, and only has a mild allergy to a random food rather than his brother's catalogue of allergies / intolerances to basic foods. He's obsessed with toilets which is rather inconvenient when it has to be kept accessible for his brother.

This evening's entertainment has included a full, stinking nappy bucket, and sacking used cheerios off the kitchen table.

He's also good at St Bernard-esque slower kisses.
I love him really. I dedicate the Scissor Sisters' Filthy Gorgeous to him.

Sucking
Slobbery

Dratted auto correct.

Aeroflotgirl · 29/09/2014 21:28

Your dh is batty, SS whatever next! Yes ds 2.7 years is a dustbin and toilet magnet

Oh ffs your DH is totally incorrect and also a douche for bullying you with comments about social services.

My dc ate his own poo when he was a toddler, cat poo when he was 9 months old. He would take dog biscuits out of the dog bowl and suck on them, get things out of the bin and bring them to me. He was all over the place, very fast and very into everything. Did he get any diseases from his adventures? No.

I feel sorry for some kids when I see overprotective mothers hovering over them. OTT

Notso · 29/09/2014 21:33

I wouldn't be arsed, thanks to recycling and composting there isn't much manky stuff in my bin anymore.

Bakeoffcakes · 29/09/2014 21:37

God your DH does sound rather strange. Is he serious about SS? Confused if he is he needs to get out a bit more.

My DDs grew up on a farm. I'd hate to think what they've licked!

ChippingInLatteLover · 29/09/2014 21:38

It sounds like things aren't too good with your DH? If you want to talk about it, you could start a thread in Relationships?! Flowers

He's being a dick. But I think you know that.

Yes, it's a bit gross, but as you can see, there are loads of disgusting things kids do (liking/chewing the buggy wheels Envy) and you know what, they'll live through it.

MRSA - is he always so full of shit? Tell him to go and read about how you get MRSA. Fuckwit.

HavanaSlife · 29/09/2014 21:40

She wont get mrsa from licking a bloody bin, as for ss is he always such an idiot ffs.

ChippingInLatteLover · 29/09/2014 21:40

As for Social Services - a baby licking the outside of a reasonably clean bin at home... of course they'd be there in a shot removing your DS from your obviously inadequate care. Hmm FFS the man is an idiot.

formerbabe · 29/09/2014 21:41

My dc ate his own poo when he was a toddler, cat poo when he was 9 months old.

I think I will stick with being a helicopter parent...as apparently that's what you are unless you are cool with such things.

starburst1979 · 29/09/2014 21:42

I stopped sterilising when my DC started licking the dog...or the floor....or the patio chairs...or the bin

minidisco · 29/09/2014 21:50

Thank you everyone, I don't feel so bad now! Dh is an arse at times, but that's a whole other thread! Blush

Just to make the point that im a bit of a germ obsessive, always have been and ive not had a day off work sick in over a decade.
just countering the "I lick public bins and my ommune system's great" posts

naty1 · 29/09/2014 21:53

DD has probably eaten own poop. I now have to put her in babygros to sleep or always at least bottoms for napping. Makes me feel sick. (Though actually not her) no amount of thats disgusting, we dont wat poopy has so far made a difference.

I would have been too busy stopping DD touching the bin to be filming. But the SS bit made me laugh. I guess they might be more concerned that you think its funny and didnt stop them.

For those worrying about the germs most any of you could have mrsa up your nose already. Lots of people have faeces on their hands/phones etc/its in public toilets when touching locks. Unexpected leaky nappies.
