Packing fora holiday

DH and I are flying out to Rome tomorrow. We are then picking up a hire car touring for a month. This will involve a formal black tie do. DH has decided we will only take hand luggage. SO he has crammed his dj still in its heavy duty suit protector, two pairs of walking boots his camera stuff into one and has said I can have the other for all our clothes, toiletries and medicines. AIBU to feel a bit doubtful about this?

A month with hand luggage only?

CarmineRose1978 · 29/09/2014 10:41

He's mad. I'd take more than that on a weekend away.

Catsmamma · 29/09/2014 10:42

he is going to look lovely in his DJ and walking boots. for the entire month

kick him in the head and tell him not to be such a twat.

Artandco · 29/09/2014 10:49

It's fine it he packs properly. Why does he need two pairs of hiking boots? 1 is adaquate.

Most airline let you take hand luggage plus a handbag/ laptop bag. So a handluggage size suitcase each to fit clothes etc, plus in handbag each he can have camera/ valuables, you can have same.

I usually take a handluggage size suitcase, plus handbag with iPad/ wallet/ stuff for kids. That fits everything for myself and x2 small children in for a week when I travel on business with them

You aren't going to take a months worth anyway surely so will need to wash stuff. 31 day old pants would be horrid! Take soap and rinse out underwear daily as you take off. Takes 2 mins. So 5 pairs plenty, even too many if washing each eve in sink.

7 days worth of other clothes. So 3 trousers, 3 jumpers, 7 tshirts ( assuming hiking boots means walking a lot). The above can be a mixture of smart and casual ie nice jeans, pair smart chinos.

granny24 · 29/09/2014 10:53

Wise advice catmama. Alas at my age don't think I could swing my leg up that high. Do you think kicking him significantly lower down would cause him to reconsider?

"DH has decided we will only take hand luggage"

Does he make decisions for both of you often?
I'd tell him to pack what he wants where he wants, then find a decent suitcase.

Alternatively, pack your clothes into the other case and see if he thinks he can fit a small tube of travel wash in with his climbing boots, as he'll only have the pants, socks, and shirt that he is wearing.

Then pack a suitcase...

PunkrockerGirl · 29/09/2014 11:08

He's being an arse. Definitely LTB Wink

SquirrelWearingATrilby · 29/09/2014 11:08

Yes. Pack your clothes and whatever you need in your bag then he can put whatever else he needs in his. Grin

We've just got back from a week away hand luggage only - no problem - everything fit in the 2 bags plus my handbag. Then on the day we went OH appeared with "just tuck these in an odd corner, I might want to wear them"
Hmm

I had to ask him what odd corner he meant as the bags were chocker. Even with the vacuum travel bags we were at full stretch!

Boleh · 29/09/2014 11:19

Tell him he's bonkers, book at least one piece if luggage online if it's not already included in your ticket and get in with packing!
You have a hire car so all the hassle he saves is 10 minutes waiting at the luggage belt and carrying it to the car. Far outweighed in my view by the fact that you have to get your hand luggage all through security and lug it around the airport while waiting for the flight along with the constant stress of not having what you need.
Mind you, DP and I did a flight yesterday with just over 100kgs of hold baggage, a small hand baggage suitcase, rucksack, handbag and wedding dress so I may not have a normal perspective on the ease of transporting luggage - DP is very good at loading luggage trolleys!

dexter73 · 29/09/2014 11:29

Why does he only want to take hand luggage?

granny24 · 29/09/2014 12:01

Dexter last time we flew it was long haul with several tight connection so we went hand baggage only. It was very quick and easy. BUT we were going to stay with family in a hot dry climate. Very different. It is the touring bit that from experience is the hard bit. If we were in the same hotel every night no probe. And no DH doesn't usually take decisions like this but can get wildly crazy ideas.

Love flying with hand baggage only, but couldn't do it for more than a week.

traviata · 29/09/2014 12:15

and where will you be packing your lovely outfit for the black tie do?

If you are happy with hand luggage only for all your stuff, then fine - as others have said, he can fit his other clothes around the walking boots in his bag.

the problem is that he seems to think he can commandeer one bag for his special items and you will just put up with sharing the other bag for everything else.

londonrach · 29/09/2014 12:17

Fine for just hand baggage but he will have to be very organised and im not sure a dj jacket is going to work. Wear the walking boots into plane anything else big. Pack trainers other shoes. Has he a smart jacket that can be rolled. Everyone else next time you packing for holiday think of how much clothes you dont use. (Travelled for three months with just one bag so can be done but only had the one shoes and washed clothes regularly so clean every day....)

FinallyHere · 29/09/2014 12:18

Pack a case and have it Sent on to your destination, by DHL or some of the specialist people who provide this service.

Pure luxury. Sorted.

chipshop · 29/09/2014 12:20

A month? I can't do more than one night with hand luggage!

Tell your DH YOU have decided to take a check in bag. Fill said suitcase with all your stuff. Don't let him put anything in. Have a lovely time. Grin

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 29/09/2014 12:36

Take me instead. I'm a great packer

Artandco · 29/09/2014 13:04

Yes even packing hand luggage there's always something's i never wear so could pack less.

RonaldMcDonald · 29/09/2014 13:10

I use hand baggage only on holidays...however I never take hiking boots/camera equipt/medicines... just a series of small stuff or jersey bits

AMumInScotland · 29/09/2014 13:18

If you are even considering travelling with only two hand-luggage cases, then the only fair way to do it is to have one each. Anything you share, like toothpaste, can be shared out equally between the two bags.

But he certainly can't decide that he gets one and a half bags for his things, and you only get half a bag for yours.

I recognise the 'gets these ideas' trait in men... if you don't want to just tell him he's an idiot, then put the two bags on the bed, get out everything that you think you'll need, while he gets out everything he thinks he'll need, and demonstrate, by obvious visible methods, that IT DOESN'T FIT!

It can be done but you'll need a really nice capsular wardrobe!

Is probably just call and book on a bag :-)

LocalVelvet · 29/09/2014 13:27

I am all for hand luggage only, but for a month's touring and a fancy do...?

What about the restrictions on liquids, for example? Will you really be able to take enough?

I would explain how all this will necessitate you buying loads of extra stuff over there, which you will have to jettison on way home as obviously no room.

I know it might cost to book on a suitcase or two, but in this instance I think even my dh would countenance it.... Mmm, maybe Smile

mumeeee · 29/09/2014 13:27

We have done hand luggage only for a few nights but we each had our own bag. Wouldn't do hand luggage only for a month.
