To have shouted at this person for taking more than 2 apples from my box of apples outside my

I have an apple tree in my garden which grows nice big cooking apples. We just moved here and I thought it would be nice to put a box outside our house for neighbours.

Anyway, I put a sign up saying "free to take, 2 per person" so all our neighbours got some.

I just saw a man come in a car and was piling up a tesco bag full of my apples and taking them to his boot.

I went running outside and asked him what he thought he was doing and to put them back. He looked at me and said it says free apples. I told him it's 2 per person. He just ignored me and sat in his car and drove off.

Now my box of apples is empty and some person who doesn't even live on my road has taken them all. I'm really not happy.

Why would someone do this? AIBU?

My DH (who drives a Volvo - though not a green one) reliably informs me that all Volvo drivers are twats. And mostly wear corduroy. Did your offender wear cords, OP?

HappyAgainOneDay · 29/09/2014 14:40

How patronising to describe a woman of advanced age "an old biddy". If it's not about age, how would yu describe someone in similar dress code who is around 30?

If you are able to describe dress in such detail, you obviously do not have enough to do during the day. Do you use a notebook?

I'm sorry if you feel hurt by the comments on here, OP. The criticism just started because people were rationed to two cooking apples each and there's not much you can do with two. Allocating only two to each taker is not generous at all. It's scrooge-like. My ndn have a plum tree with a bumper harvest this year. I finished up with 9lb (yes, lb not lbs) not half a dozen and I live alone.

Bambambini · 29/09/2014 14:44

It's a funny, silly, strange little thread about bloody apples - the Op has took it all in pretty good humour - do folk really need to be so bloody serious and nasty about it!

Bambambini · 29/09/2014 14:46

kulamlobesder - is that Annie with a name change? (Just nosey)

Bettercallsaul1 · 29/09/2014 14:47

You are definitelynot being unreasonable, OP - this would give me the pip.

Bettercallsaul1 · 29/09/2014 14:48

However, agree that further action would be fruitless.

KulamLobeseder · 29/09/2014 14:49

Bambambini - yes, 'tis Annie. But at last count there were over 20 other Annies on here and at least one seems to pop up on most threads I post on, so I've got pissed off with drowning in a sea of Annies. Sad

rastamam · 29/09/2014 14:51

yes i was enjoying how lovely and lighthearted this midsomer apple theivery thread had been with no nastyness (quite unlike most AIBU).

Bambambini · 29/09/2014 14:54

kulam? Intrigued - I understood your old name but this one has me bamboozled!

Gruntfuttock · 29/09/2014 14:56

I think a lot of people were taken aback by the OP saying "I wanted everyone to see how generous I am." hence limiting her 'generosity' with the 2-per-person stipulation, so that the box of apples was visible for the maximum amount of time. It's not a generous attitude IMO.

Only1scoop · 29/09/2014 15:01

Yeah not sure it came 'pomme the heart' myself really. Think that comment was the core of the problem.

Bettercallsaul1 · 29/09/2014 15:02

Bambambini rastamam - so you feel the quality of comments has crumbled?

ProudAsPunch92 · 29/09/2014 15:05

Only on Mumsnet Grin

KulamLobeseder · 29/09/2014 15:07

Bambambini - everyone else!

Ilovexmastime · 29/09/2014 15:07

I've found this thread very upsetting, our apple tree died earlier this year so it's very insensitive of the OP to boost that she has so many apples she can give them away, while we have none Sad

MarieSarah · 29/09/2014 15:10

BigRedBall How much time do you spend in front of your window exactly?

This is a fake and you are just trying to get reactions of people to get some attention, right?

If not... Welll

Gruntfuttock · 29/09/2014 15:11

Ilovexmastime I'm sorry that you're feeling so bruised and rotten. Perhaps you'll get a windfall and be able to buy a replacement.

Bettercallsaul1 · 29/09/2014 15:18

Sincere condolences on your apple tree, Ilovexmastime. I hope you aren't going to bough down under this tragedy though. That wood be a shame.

Sazzle41 · 29/09/2014 15:53

Um , thats like a trainee Dr i shared with. She put half a v small choc cake out saying help yourselve's then moaned when the rest of us finished it off.(4 of us so bound to, it wasnt a large cake). Limiting portions re. whats left overs or 'free' is a bit tight IMO. Next time she did it we didnt touch it and all left it to go stale. If it comes with conditions its not really 'free' to me: its just hassle i dont want.

ithoughtofitfirst · 29/09/2014 18:48

My favourite thing to do at the moment is stand in my window and watch all my neighbours' parking spaces and make sure no one parks in them without permission.

I got your back OP.

BigRedBall · 29/09/2014 18:50

I've never seen a young woman walk hunched over with a shopping cart and a scarf on her head Confused. Why would I need to peer out my window to see people dressed like this? I do happen to venture outside and see real people walking down the street too y'know! Stop being so tetchy. I wasn't trying to offend anyone Hmm

grunt you're absolutely stunning. I don't know how I missed that striking picture of your lovely self. My heart is all a flutter at your prettiness.

ilovexmastime I didn't mean to offend apple-less people with my post. I'm sorry, I should have thought of all you people with dead apple trees before posting. Forgive me.

BigRedBall · 29/09/2014 18:52

Well that's just weird isn't it ithoughtofitfirst? Why would you do that?

Wink

Starlingsintheslipstream · 30/09/2014 21:30

I must have weird children because they would think it fun to help themselves to the OP's apples. They love it when we come across houses selling their homegrown gluts. I always end up having to buy some Confused.

pearpotter · 01/10/2014 04:08

Is this a joke, OP? Are you quite well?

You see, where I live a lot of neighbours put excess produce outside their houses in boxes with a note saying "help yourself" and I have never once seen a sign saying "2 per person". Why put a condition on it? Why would you not be glad if one person were to take the lot? They are doing you a favour!

Sure, if you were charging money, say for eggs, with an honesty box- totally different.

But to restrict people to two FREE cooking apples seems bonkers. What do you imagine your neighbours will be doing, making individual fruit pies?

musicalendorphins2 · 01/10/2014 04:28

I think this idea of putting extra fresh fruit & veggies out is wonderful. I have not ever seen it done.
