Bus queues - do they exist?

itsmeitscathy · 24/09/2014 21:25

So if I'm waiting on a bus I let people who got there first go on before me - it's a really busy bus and often only one or two people get on and the rest have to wait.

AIBU to think if I've been waiting for ten minutes and someone swans up as the bus pulls up, I have priority? On more than one occasion -the same person has dived for the bus and I've had to wait on the next one (which potentially makes me late for work). They've also convinced the driver to let them on when they've already been told there's no room. Is this rude or does no such etiquette exist?

There seems to be a queue every time I get the bus.

Delphiniumsblue · 24/09/2014 22:07

Maybe it is where you live- queues where I live.

itsmeitscathy · 24/09/2014 22:12

Must be where I live then!

Certain bus stops in my area (mainly at stops where more than one bus stops and usually town/city centre) are terrible people just huddle together and launch at the bus as soon as it pulls in there is no order or curtesy anymore.

Aridane · 25/09/2014 09:59

No bus queues in my part of London - though equally no scrum (even when the bus is near full)

JustAShopGirl · 25/09/2014 10:04

there are queues here - BUT - the bus pulls up at one end or other of the bus stop - their choice seems arbitrary - when he pulls up at the "wrong" end for the queue there is a bit of a free for all as people who were there first have to get through the ones further down the line...

JeanneDeMontbaston · 25/09/2014 11:12

There's definitely a queue here. Three different buses use the same stop, so if one arrives first, part of the queue politely separates itself out and goes forward, and everyone else shuffles up.

On occasion tourists get it wrong and we are all very British.

misselphaba · 25/09/2014 13:06

People dont tend to queue for the bus in London. A priority boarding system seems to operate -older people and those with obvious mobility problems first, people with prams last for some reason and everyone else fighting it out with their elbows in the middle.

Vintagejazz · 25/09/2014 13:50

People don't really queue for buses anymore in Dublin. But most people are aware of who was there before them and let them get on first.

MistressDeeCee · 25/09/2014 15:29

I live in London and was in Leicester last Saturday. Stood at bus stop, bus pulled up, I went to get on the bus and a voice yelled from somewhere "THERE'S A QUEUE, YOU KNOW". Which put me right in my place Grin Im so used to having to scramble onto a bus, I wasn't even thinking. People don't really bother to queue in London. My DD lives in Kent and I've noticed people queue for buses there, too. Its nice, actually...

HappyAgainOneDay · 25/09/2014 15:41

If you are waiting 'on' the bus, why are you in a queue for it?

Did you mean that you were waiting 'for' a bus?

AnyoneForTARDIS · 25/09/2014 17:15

not where I live either OP.

worst offenders were the schoolkid teens whod roll up at last minute and not even us mums and others hoiking our boobs up and reminding them to queue would help.

Driver should tell people theres a queue, however they have enough to do.

I remember when bus conductors existed there was more ettiquete and order as the conductor would help with 1st come 1st on bus stuff as they could see when bus pulled up.

agree with when bus stops at 'other end' and the queue jumpers too.

its bloody awful, rude and antisocial.

jay55 · 25/09/2014 18:21

If the stop is for multiple buses you don't know who else needs the same bus unless they're the one to flag it down.

bette06 · 25/09/2014 18:30

I can't remember the last time I saw an actual queue at a bus stop - as in people standing in a line in the order they arrived - Certainly not seen one this century anyway!

At my local bus stop people sometimes let people on in pretty much the order they think they arrived. In the city centre there's just no way for a queueing system to work - There are loads of different buses arriving at the stop, no one knows which bus(es) the other people want and, because several buses can arrive at the same time, they stop at various points along the road so you have to run and frantically try to flag down the one you want. Having said that, it's very rare for a bus to be full and stop letting anyone else board and often there are enough seats for everyone - so it doesn't matter as much what order people arrived in.

AnyoneForTARDIS · 25/09/2014 18:32

yes, but its annoying when you've been stood there for ages in all weathers, and someone strolls along just as a bus is pulling up and pushes in front of everyone else!

LadySybilLikesCake · 25/09/2014 18:32

There's a queue for the coachbus (it's a fast bus) here, and a queue if you wait at the bus station, but it's a free for all otherwise. It's bonkers.

LadySybilLikesCake · 25/09/2014 18:41

The bus driver actually made a couple of people wait yesterday so I could get on first, I was Shock That's never happened before. If you're at the bus stop no one gives a cow.

itsmeitscathy · 25/09/2014 19:28

Thanks for your contribution happy.

ForalltheSaints · 25/09/2014 19:29

Not officially- you won't see a 'queue this side' notice.

itsmeitscathy · 25/09/2014 19:35

I don't live in the centre, perhaps 5 people get on max - I really don't think there's any excuse for it! Grin

Not in Ilford/Seven Kings where I get buses.

I can be on my own for ages, then more people crowd up and they bastard well cram on first.

I was waiting a couple of weeks ago , just me, another woman rocks up, I put my hand out (so she Knows I want the bus too) she pushes on.

"I am here y'know" I said. She gave me a Hmm face.

littleducks · 25/09/2014 19:50

I'm in London and there is no queue. o would find it a bit odd now tbh. Some people stand, others sit under the shelter, done pace about on the phone or smoke...
A formal queue would be odd

That said the buses are frequent and rarely are too full. When they are I think the driver miss the whole stop/just open back doors rather than let just a few people me on.

turkeyboots · 25/09/2014 19:53

No queues in London, it's a free for all. But in regional town I live in bus queues are very formal affairs.

whois · 25/09/2014 20:47

It's difficult when more than one bus stops and a stop tho.

I'm in london and observe no queues tho - people stand, lean, shelter in the shelter, stay outside etc.

Never not got on a bus tho, never seen then that full.

AlwaysLurking38 · 28/09/2014 04:41

Honestly depends how busy the bus stop is. If there's just a few people then everyone has manners and waits their turn.

If there's loads of people then its a free for all.

I've found the elderly are really polite round my end. I'm in my 20's and most elderly people always try to let me get on before them. I politely refuse but bless them, tis nice
