Now that the Scotland referendum is over, does anyone else think it is now time to have a complete constitutional reform, and discontinue the role of the Queen and all her associated hangers-on?

I wouldn't be against a referendum on the subject, I dislike having an unelected head of state. I think when the Queen dies it might be time to consider the idea of becoming a republic.

doyouwantfrieswiththat · 20/09/2014 13:58

I can't imagine the UK without a monarchy but when Queenie goes my opinion might change.

cupofsneeze · 20/09/2014 13:59

YANBU.

Once the Queen pops off then yes.

LynetteScavo · 20/09/2014 14:02

Well, I quite like having a monarchy.

LovleyRitaMeterMaid · 20/09/2014 14:03

Me her see it out then no more.

clayspaniel · 20/09/2014 14:05

What's to like about it Lynette?

Yabu

SlicedAndDiced · 20/09/2014 14:06

Definitely time.

Unfortunately I think we as a nation are still a long way off.

clayspaniel · 20/09/2014 14:06

I agree with Rita

Nerf · 20/09/2014 14:07

I would rather a slimmed down monarchy than an elected president tbh.

daisydee43 · 20/09/2014 14:07

aww i love the royals Sad

Nancy66 · 20/09/2014 14:08

I can't see UK citizens voting for an end to the monarchy.

clayspaniel · 20/09/2014 14:08

Dontstep please expand if you have time - would be good to hear your own view.

Nancy this might be because they have not really thought about it that much, because they have always been used to it.

itsmeitscathy · 20/09/2014 14:11

I love the queen but I'm not keen on the next generation. I dread to think what Charles will be like as king. So YABU just now but I think it needs to happen eventually.

Nancy66 · 20/09/2014 14:13

Clay, maybe. But we have a big, ageing population. They're the people who get off their arse to vote and they're the people who (typically) like the royal family.

Asteria · 20/09/2014 14:13

YABU to think that there are enough people in the UK who dislike them enough to simply axe them. They have hung on through centuries of "get rid of them" chat, so why not do a yes/no vote nationwide and see what happens? I would be amazed if they were axed as it is a relatively small (misinformed) minority that truly believes they are worthless spongers.

SwedishEdith · 20/09/2014 14:13

No not really and I'm not a monarchist at all. Maybe when she dies there needs to be some sort of review of the cost. The Scandinavian countries, the Netherlands and Belgium are still monarchies so maybe we could follow that model.

clayspaniel · 20/09/2014 14:15

I think it would be better to sort it out before Charles takes over, it could be quite unpleasant and cruel to have him crowned then get rid of him (plus people might get swept away by the spectacle and festivity of a coronation, and revert to viewing the Royals as harmless and quaint).

OP posts:
Viviennemary · 20/09/2014 14:18

I totally disagree with the concept of a hereditary monarchy. However, if we are to believe the media I am in a very small minority. If it must carry on then surely a complete overhaul is well overdue.

Nancy66 · 20/09/2014 14:19

I've always thought that Charles won't be King. He's 66 in a couple of weeks.
Queen could go on another 10-15 years. Who'd want to be crowned age 80?

TiggyD · 20/09/2014 14:19

Get rid of the monarchy the week before Charles gets crowned. Cruel and funny!

I don't think a true democracy should have an unelected head of state. Chuck can still be King, but without power.

Asteria · 20/09/2014 14:20

revert to viewing the Royals as harmless and quaint
Clayspaniel - I don't want to start a riot here, you pose a very interesting question, but if a Coronation would "revert" the public to that view of the Royals I presume you believe that they are currently the polar opposite?

SwedishEdith · 20/09/2014 14:20

I think that'd be highly unlikely, the Queen does a pretty exemplary job as a head of state regardless of whether you think she should be there in the first. I can't see the call for it atm, not after a highly charged referendum
