AIBU to think the chemistry rounds on Pointless should actually involve some knowledge of chemistry?

Rather than just memorising the names of the chemical elements?

African

I was on a couple of years ago (strokes Pointless trophy)

thegreylady · 19/09/2014 23:18

I can usually do any lit questions and can make a stab at chemistry, history, geography etc but popular culture of any kind is alien to me. I didn't much like 60s music in the 60s when I was a teenager but it is vaguely nostalgic now. I discovered 'folk' in 1962 and that was that.
I can do animal breeds though and most modern languages questions. I love the Words rounds :)
Burkina Faso and Tuvalu score low in many Geography questions.

thegreylady · 19/09/2014 23:20

Ikiboo you have a 'coveted Pointless trophy'!
What is it made of and how tall is it please?
My guess is perspex and 12"

BreconBeBuggered · 19/09/2014 23:27

Oh, please tell me the trophy is as huuuge as it appears to be on the screen.

I always hope for a proper Chemistry question, just to see if I can do it. I like the shows when the questions are mostly about school subjects, interspersed with a little bit of 80s pop or telly. I can pretend to myself I am Very Knowledgeable on those days. If it's a film plus golfing heroes day, I am officially dim.

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 19/09/2014 23:33

Do you get a tropgy each?

lbsjob87 · 20/09/2014 06:01

YAB a teensy bit U. The whole point is that everyone has a chance of getting an answer, and I would imagine the vast majority of people's knowledge of Chemistry ended at GCSE. Although they had a maths round yesterday with various clues, I guess they could do that one day.

As an aside, I bloody love that show - I have thought about applying a few times but have various confidence issues. I did once audition for Only Connect though - what does that tell you?!

I usually get one or two lowest answers per show, and the odd pointless. Our crowning glory in this house was when my then 4-year-old (a big Richard fan!) got a Pointless answer IN THE FINAL!! She named a Little Miss or Mr Man beginning with S - Little Miss Scary, incidentally. If she'd been on there, she would have won about £12 grand, dammit!

EduCated · 20/09/2014 06:23

I once managed to get 3 pointless answers in the final round, with Famous 5 titles.

Naturally this was from the comfort of my own sofa.

lbsjob87 · 20/09/2014 07:20

Well done EduCated! My problem is, on the telly it seems easy. If I was on there, and picked Children's books, I wouldn't Mr Men or Famous Five. I'd get something like Beast Quest or some other series I only know of because I work with 10 year old boys.
It wouldn't be anything I actually read as a child.

Veritata · 20/09/2014 09:33

I went to a recording once. They asked us to do that thing with the rising "Oooooo" as the lights move downwards on the tower; also not to applaud the "coveted Pointless trophy" because it tended to sound sarcastic.

Pointlessfan · 20/09/2014 09:40

How have I only noticed this thread 3 pages in?? I'm always trying to persuade DH to apply to go on with me. We are both good at geography and sports, he knows history and politics and I love the word rounds when you have to think of words containing particular endings. My mum tells me there is now a pointless app but I can't get it on my stupid windows phone.

GirlMeetsKoi · 20/09/2014 09:48

My Pointless Geography answer is always St Vincent and the Grenadines. Has anyone noticed that Vanuatu is almost never pointless now?

Panzee · 20/09/2014 09:57

I've just downloaded the Pointless app!

Pointlessfan · 20/09/2014 10:26

Is the app good? It's probably a good thing I can't get it on my phone, I'd never get anything else done!

Panzee · 20/09/2014 11:11

I thought it was a bit rubbish, but then played ten games in a row... Blush

Pointlessfan · 20/09/2014 12:09

Have you won yet?!

iklboo · 20/09/2014 12:09

Unfortunately, trophy is about 6 inches high. But bloody heavy. And, yes, you get one each. In a lovely presentation box.
