To think changing a dirty nappy on a train is NOT ok?

I was on the train yesterday at around school pick up time, so it was quite busy.

Two women got on with their children, a few school age who ran riot the whole journey, running from seat to seat playing catch or something, disturbing other passengers and riding scooters down the aisles while their mums just chattered with eachother.

That was annoying. But then one of the women decided to change her toddlers nappy on the seats in the next 'seat section' away from me iyswim. It STANK. Lots of people moved away in disgust but she didn't seem aware. There are seats on the train which to be fair are probably grim but they got off the next stop!

AIBU to think she should have waited? Or is changing shitty nappies on public transport a thing?

YANBU, gross.

DeWee · 17/09/2014 12:39

When dd1 was a baby we did a long trip (London to Crewe) and she managed 3 dirty nappies on that train-and there was no baby change-the toilets were the 1m square things, and most weren't working.
Conductor took us into first class to do it, and gave us the complimentary papaer to do it on.
Always wondered what those first class people thought, but he said it was the only place there was space.

enjoyingscience · 17/09/2014 12:42

Oh god, I've done that before. PFB, and was on a train from London - Newcastle. On my own, and the toilets were a sea of piss with no changing table.

Did it on the floor in the vestible bit between compartments. Horrible. I know people were probably grossed out, but there was no way I was putting DS anywhere near the toilet floor.

AliceDoesntLiveHereAnymore · 17/09/2014 12:49

Perhaps she was already struggling with the behaviour of her other child/children and didn't want to leave them completely unattended while she took the toddle in to be changed. If she'd gone in the loo to change the toddler, would you then have complained about her leaving the other child/children unattended? Doesn't seem like she can do right either way.....

BettyFlour · 17/09/2014 13:20

She could have changed nappy once off the train. If it's a toddler, she could have put kid on the ground or a seat at the station. At least the smell would have evaporated outside. Not left it all stinky elsewhere. Disgusting.

Someone did this in the doctor's surgery with. Toddler. They (mother and father) were furtively changing the nappy thinking no-one could see them. But it was very obvious as the tell-tale stink was disgusting. There was toilet at the doctor's they could have used. Admittedly it's small. But either they could have sat on the toilet (lid down) and changed kid on their knee. Or they could have got child to stand on toilet seat lid and change nappy standing up. If they don't know how to do that, then they need to learn. It's NOT ok to change a poo filled nappy inside public areas. Go to the loos, or go outside.

Bumpsadaisie · 17/09/2014 13:28

It depends. If the next stop was 5 mins I would have waited. If it was an hour I would have had to do something (you can't leave a child sitting in poo for that long).

But there must have been a better way of doing it - she should have used the loos.

WarblingOyster · 17/09/2014 13:45

In her situation, YANBU. She should have waited until she got off as it was unnecessary. I'm sure there are toilets in the train station she departed at. However, I have done this once and it was a poo explosion. LO less than 2 weeks old, old train with no toilet and an hour to go on the journey, I wasn't happy to leave a newborn lying in shit and dirty clothes. So in some situations, I think it has to be done but for a short journey, no way.

WarblingOyster · 17/09/2014 13:47

Oh and I've done the whole changing in small, smelly toilet cubicle on a train. Why must they poo on public transport! Grin

slightlyglitterstained · 17/09/2014 13:50

I think there must be some high pitched "it's poo time! And make it a massive one!" signal that only babies can hear Grin

Frustrated101 · 17/09/2014 14:37

If i had another option i would have taken it and in this womans position i would have waited until i got off. However if i were on the train/bus for a while and the facilities were inadequate then i would have changed in the train. IME, you can still smell the poo in the nappy. The quicker it comes off and into a nice smelling nappy bag the better.

When DS does a poo as we have just set off somewhere, the whole car smells 2 minutes in.

So YANBU if this lady could have changed in the train station but YABU if she had no other option.

Now the kids riding up an down the aisle on a scooter is another story.

Deathraystare · 17/09/2014 15:02

Well I don't suppose she cared either way since she ignored the kids riding their scooters on the train. The same kind of mothers that totally ignore little shits on their scooters in supermarkets. Probably never take them to parts...

Yanbu

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 17/09/2014 23:12

No on the face of it. It probably isn't okay, but then neither is leaving a child uncomfortable in a soiled nappy. so if the train had no toilets what was the women supposed to do

Summergarden · 18/09/2014 11:11

It's not ideal, and she should have waited as was getting off soon. But on a longer journey, if toilets are rubbish/too small, I wouldn't have a problem with it. Especially if she opened a window or 2 after.

I've done the same enjoyingscience

Changed inbetween the carriages rather than in the piss soaked toilet on a train.

If DS is left in poo nappy for more than a couple of mins - his skin starts to break down and he gets really sore very quickly. Honestly, I didn't care what people thought, although I was quick and wouldn't do it on a seat next to someone, so for that she was BU, but to not use the toilet - I don't blame her.

BlackberryandNettle · 18/09/2014 16:02

I did an in pram nappy change in pub outdoor seating area yesterday lunch time. Did try to make it inconspicuous - was pretty quiet and we were facing away from all other tables so they could only see pram hood, think I got away without anyone noticing. Not a poo luckily, v wet nappy though, couldn't wait, only tiny inaccessible loos inside.

Floggingmolly · 18/09/2014 16:10

What if she had to get straight onto a bus?. There would have been toilets at the station, wouldn't there? Confused. I've never passed through a railway station that didn't have public toilets.

DuelingFanjo · 18/09/2014 16:11

Are you complaining about the nappy of the unruly children?

MrsPiggie · 18/09/2014 16:16

YANBU. But maybe I'm the only mother who changed toddler nappies whilst they were standing up, so I don't see anything wrong with doing it in the train toilets.

YANBU. She should have used the toilets or waited until she got off if she was getting off in a few minutes. That's revolting otherwise.

TheRealAmandaClarke · 18/09/2014 16:33

Wouldnt bother me. Station loos can be impossible to use with kids/ babies.

It is disgusting behaviour, but dirty nappies, toilet training et al seems to be a very emotive issue on Mumsnet.
