Deport foreign criminals

Chickensarmpitsstink · 16/09/2014 23:33

My judgment may be clouded....

I have name changed to protect myself and my sister.

My sister was ganged raped by Jamacian nationals before christmas last year.

Today we found out they have previous convictions and have been to prison before for violent offences.

If they had been deported the last time they offended by sister would be okay! She wouldn't of had the agony of waiting to find out if she had HIV. She wouldn't of been beaten do bad that we barely recognised her.

Surely if foreigners commit violent acts they should be sent home! Aibu?

Please be gentle, as a family we have had a horrendous day. She's now been diagnosed with cervical cancer. Sad

Flowers Flowers

Yes, people should be deported the first time they have a criminal record. When you are a guest in someone else's home you need to be a on your best behavior.

I'm so sorry what happened to your sister. Sad

londonrach · 16/09/2014 23:51

Sorry re your sister Flowers. Why anyone with a record is let in? Hope your sister getting better x

Thistledew · 16/09/2014 23:57

I'm sorry for your sister, but deporting someone never stopped anyone from committing a crime. A rapist will rape, no matter what country he is in. If it hadn't been your sister, it would have been someone else's sister in Jamaica.

Deportation doesn't stop crime, it just passes the buck. Most frequently to countries that have fewer resources to prevent the offender acting again.

Chickensarmpitsstink · 16/09/2014 23:58

Sister is doing fine but she is one to hide her feelings.

She's lost her job, boyfriend and all of her confidence but she's slowly getting her life back,

Thanks for the lovely comments

I think I'm just angry Thistle. My sister is a shell of who she used to be.

Very sorry for your poor sister :(

Anyone who is sentenced for a crime punishable by more than a year in prison can be deported at the end of their sentence I believe. I seem to remember a case a few years back which was similar and apparently these cases just weren't being picked up in a co-ordinated way so people were released and disappeared before Immigration could deport them.

Cuts or inefficiency? Don't know. Often it's not a disaster but on occasions it does ruin lives. It is law but laws aren't always enforced

Thistledew · 17/09/2014 00:05

That is completely understandable Chickens, but I don't believe deportation is the answer.

I hate to think what sort of criminals we would end up with if every country was so assiduous about deporting British nationals who committed offences abroad - all the drugs runners from South America, the paedophiles from Malaysia and Thailand? I don't think we would be any better off.

Chickensarmpitsstink · 17/09/2014 00:08

Personally i would like to see them
Hanged.

They've ruined her life. It'll never be the same chain.

Again not chain

Is Jamaica one of the former Empire countries where the death penalty is still an available option?

Chickensarmpitsstink · 17/09/2014 00:12

I don't know how to speak to her or what to say. I feel dead guilty like I've abandoned her or something.

HauntedNoddyCar · 17/09/2014 00:22

Thistle they usually ask to come home to serve their sentences anyway.

Chickens some things can't be made better. You just need people to listen, pass another tissue or drink and hold your hand until it hurts a tiny bit less

2minsofyourtime · 17/09/2014 01:36

Yanbu, they should have been deported the first time they committed and crime, and they should never have been allowed in unchecked in the first place, we can't continue to let welcome everyone with open arms

I hope they are deported this time, and are given a seriously long sentence.

usualnamechanger · 17/09/2014 02:27

Chickens, I'm very sorry for your sister, I agree with you, rapists should be killed. Your sister needs your support. You don't have to say anything, just be there for her and listen to her when she is ready to talk

Bulbasaur · 17/09/2014 03:52

I don't know how to speak to her or what to say. I feel dead guilty like I've abandoned her or something.

Sometimes when traumatic things happen, it's good to have people that come by and chat like they used to, to bring a sense of normalcy back. Ask her out for coffee, see a movie, talk about your cat, talk about stuff you used talk about together. She's not her diagnosis or her traumatic event, she's still your sister somewhere in there. The worst part of having something like that happen is how everyone treats you afterwards (in my opinion).

Just knowing you're still there for her will make a difference.

Then if she wants to talk about any of it, and she might not for a bit, just listen and let her know you're there for her.

DontDrinkAndFacebook · 17/09/2014 04:25

I understand why you'd see them hang. It's hard not to want that under the circumstances. Sad

I agree that all foreign criminals should be deported. I also think that anyone given leave to remain or citizenship should have it stripped and be deported immediately if they are convicted of a crime within 5 years. I don't care about rights to a family life. their family is quite free to get on the plane and go with them. I don't care if the country they came from is 'not safe'. They should have thought of that before they committed the crime.

Andrewofgg · 17/09/2014 08:29

Neither Jamaica nor any other ex-British colony hangs for rape. Only for murder, and on any event the Jamaicans will not try them again if they are deported.

Agree with OP that they should be deported, prison gate to airport, and be Jamaica's problem, not ours.

WooWooOwl · 17/09/2014 10:25

I agree that foreign nationals should be deported if convicted of crimes.

Chickensarmpitsstink · 17/09/2014 14:14

Thanks for all the replies. I had to log off last night because it got too upsetting to talk about.

It's a new day though Smile

Copied the link out wrong, www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2014/sep/18/alice-gross-police-arnis-zalkalns-murder-conviction-suspect

Maisyblue · 18/09/2014 11:33

Deport immediately, no appeals, nothing. They've given up the right to live in the UK by their despicable crime, why on earth should taxpayers pay a single penny towards their keep. Unbelievable what these low life's cost us.

Kendodd · 18/09/2014 11:41

Agreed.

Have the people who raped her been convicted and given long sentences?

grumpasaur · 18/09/2014 11:44

Awww chicken, you poor thing and your poor sister.

Can I gently suggest that perhaps you are misdirecting your anger a bit because it is easier to focus on immigration than it is to focus on helping your sister pick up the pieces? There are lots of flaws in the system... But right now, you need to focus on your sister.

If it helps, at all, I was raped by two (British!) men (one of whom lived on my old road!!). I felt for a while like a shell of who I used to be, and I know my loved ones were very worried about me. I got really depressed and luckily had a great support network to get me through it.

However- that "shell person" doesn't last for ever, and I slowly got back to my normal, vibrant self. If anything I am stronger now than I was before, happily married, working, etc.

So- if I can make any recommendations, get your sister into a rape support group as well as into 1:1 counselling. Make sure she is sleeping and not suffering from PTSD (if she is, get her to see her GP, they have me some strong drugs which knocked me sideways but did help). And, be patient- it takes time. She will heal. Let her dictate the pace. Allow her to grieve. But she will come through it- Especially with such a lovely sister!!!

Flexly · 18/09/2014 11:49

So sorry to read this Chickens. To answer your original question, I totally agree with you that convicted foreign criminals should be deported, upon sentence (so we don’t have to pay for their jail upkeep!) and never be allowed back.

I’d echo above, just be there for your sister, as much as you possibly can. There is a fantastic organisation called RAINN (rape, abuse, incest national network) who will be able to offer you practical advice as well as support you as you support your sister through all of this. They have an online hotline where you can talk to their counselors (as can your sister) in total confidence. www.rainn.org Flowers
