Costly fat class

Lolodizzyone · 14/09/2014 22:48

Last week I spent just under sixty pounds at Slimming world class, and have managed in space of a week to put 3lbs on and to spill hair serum all over book! Dried it out in airing cupboard, oh dear all pages stuck together. Go back to class with said book expecting replacement and encouragement got neither only a request for ten pounds toreplace book. Having just parted with sixty quid did not think this was very fair. Or is it just me? Book clearly ruined so am not going to pass on to someone else and profit from freebie. Wishing I just tried to eat less and move more now!

Who spilt hair serum on the book?
If it was them, they should replace it.
If it was you, pay up!

OraProNobis · 14/09/2014 22:52

I've always rather felt that Slimming World and the like exist only to make money out of you and are rather ruthless in pursuit of that aim. £60 is a lot! I recommend going no sugar and start walking - that'll save you at least £60 next week/month!

bakingtins · 14/09/2014 22:54

How did it cost you £60?? Seems to be permanently half price joining fee of £5 then £5 a week near me.

HeySoulSister · 14/09/2014 22:59

Slimming world can be damaging to more than your wallet..... The 'eat as much as you like' of certain foods on red/green days is not good advice

You'd be better off spending the money on a decent bra and trainers and getting out there moving

WitchWay · 14/09/2014 23:00

They are a business - I can't imagine they actually want people to lose weight & keep it off. I have heard they spout crap like "vegetables contain 'empty calories' so you can eat as much as you like" Confused

Agree with your alternative plan: eat less (but not too much so you won't her hungry) & move more (but not too much so you won't be hungry)

Good luck with losing weight & keeping it off! Smile

WitchWay · 14/09/2014 23:00

*feel hungry not her hungry Confused

Discopanda · 14/09/2014 23:01

At least the hair serum will make it nice and slippery for your class leader to stick up her bum!

OraProNobis · 14/09/2014 23:05

100% what WitchWay said.

BobPatandIgglePiggle · 14/09/2014 23:10

I spilt dp's bottle of Corona earlier. We spent £64.89 in Tesco today. I might n't pop along there tomorrow and ask them to replace the bottle.

wheresthelight · 14/09/2014 23:11

why the hell should they replace the book because you were stupid enough to spill hair serum on it? yabu and you know it

equally it isn't their fault that you have out on weight.

take some responsibility for your own actions and stop blaming anything and everything else

WorraLiberty · 14/09/2014 23:13

It's a shame but of course they're going to want you to pay to replace it.

You're just another paying customer to them.

MargotLovedTom · 14/09/2014 23:13

How was it £60?

tabulahrasa · 14/09/2014 23:15

What did you buy for £60????

ShadowStar · 14/09/2014 23:18

Unless slimming world destroyed the book, it's unreasonable to expect them to replace it for free.

Also interested to know how it costs £60? I haven't been but the prices quoted on posters near me look significantly cheaper.

Discopanda · 14/09/2014 23:20

Wow, calling somebody stupid for having a simple accident? There's a lot of keyboard warriors in the Mumsnet forums tonight!

Lolodizzyone · 14/09/2014 23:27

Its only a flimsy paperback book and I think ten pounds is a bit steep. But then I guess they are about making money. It has bit in the back where they record your weight loss or gain. I bought a 12 week countdown which was not the best thing I have ever done! Think alcohol was my undoing, don't have book now with plans in so can either throw good money after bad or eat less and move more. Am favouring the latter after this week! Have arthritis in hands and didn't put lid on serum in bag tightly enough. Oops

If I did G.A.F.F about my weight there's no way I'd go to slimming class. Paying out all kids of money for someone to tell me I'm fat. No thankyou. I'd rather spend the money on chocolate.

Ibizatime · 14/09/2014 23:32

Mmm...

Im on slimming world and it's a little more complicated then eat all the food.

Im guessing the £60 was a countdown (12 weeks membership)

None of the books cost £10 so I don't really understand that..

Did you do a food list op?

I've lost quite a bit of weight so I'm pretty happy

tabulahrasa · 14/09/2014 23:33

Oh a countdown...I was trying to work out how many hifi bars you'd have had to have bought, lol.

The thing is, SW is a franchise...it's the consultant's money it comes out of if they give away books and what have you.

All the information is on the website btw and there's an ap with a weeks menu if that's what you want.

Ibizatime · 14/09/2014 23:36

Well you're not going to lose weight if you're drinking alcohol it's full of calories...

Ibizatime · 14/09/2014 23:39

Did you not have your book in the folder you get?

bakingtins · 15/09/2014 06:47

You can get the book on ebay if you need a replacement. If you've paid for 12 weeks you might as well go. The group leader as perfectly justified in not replacing a book you'd damaged. I lost 21 lbs with SW over a similar period after my second baby, it does work if you stick with it.

fascicle · 15/09/2014 09:17

In an ideal world, you'd hope they would be encouraging and supporting (?new) members. They could charge you a nominal fee to reflect the cost price of the book, rather than seemingly seeking to extract maximum profit. Presumably people go to SW and similar hoping for a supportive environment.

They exist to make money, profits are all they truly care about. I could never pay anyone to help me lose weight, I'd just know they were spouting off any old crap to take my money from me and it just wouldn't sit right with me.

Slimming world confuses me the most of all. The unlimited pasta/rice thing that gets me, how does anyone lose weight on it? I know many do but I just don't get it. Portion control is so important but essentially what SW is saying is you can eat six plates of pasta a day and still lose the pounds. It's just the notion of someone severely overweight being used to eating A LOT being given a list of foods they can essentially pig out on and apparently not worry about it. Also don't like the fact they refer to food as a sin (syn).

They make so much money off the back of products they sell in supermarkets too and they're packed full of so much crap. Low calorie/low fat but also high sugar, salt and chemicals. Just use your noggin- control your portions, keep crap to a minimum and move. Like a miracle the pounds will shift.
