Costly fat class

Last week I spent just under sixty pounds at Slimming world class, and have managed in space of a week to put 3lbs on and to spill hair serum all over book! Dried it out in airing cupboard, oh dear all pages stuck together. Go back to class with said book expecting replacement and encouragement got neither only a request for ten pounds toreplace book. Having just parted with sixty quid did not think this was very fair. Or is it just me? Book clearly ruined so am not going to pass on to someone else and profit from freebie. Wishing I just tried to eat less and move more now!

"Portion control is so important but essentially what SW is saying is you can eat six plates of pasta a day and still lose the pounds"

Not by itself you can't - it's not as straightforward as just eat pasta and lose weight. What you're eating the pasta with is important and tbh anyone who would eat six plates of pasta was probably eating six plates of something worse for you and would lose weight with a straight swap, at least to start with.

Also SW don't rely on you buying their products at all, they don't have any supermarket products... It's actually really quite hard to do it and use convenience foods, it relies mostly on you cooking lots of things with loads of vegetables in.

Like I said before it's a franchise, I don't know whether the consultants have to pay for materials, but I assume so as I don't know of any franchise systems like that where they don't. So it's not just that it's company policy, it's that that's coming out if the consultant's money.

I'll agree with you about syns though - it's supposed to be short for synergy...but I remain unconvinced in that one.

I have an old book that i can post out to you if you want it.

Yanbu imo. The shitty books are not worth a tenner.

itsbetterthanabox · 15/09/2014 12:16

I think most people would imagine they'd replace the book because it's not an actual book it's like booklet leaflet thing. You'd think they'd have loads of them free as most places would something like that but slimming world call it a book and want money so it becomes sought after Confused

'They exist to make money, profits are all they truly care about'.

They are a business. What's wrong with that. No business wants to make a loss and close down. I don't get why they should be different?

I'm dubious about the whole diet industry, but it can be useful to some people. I did ok at Weightwatchers for a while a couple of years ago. Now I'm doing it by myself by eating well and exercising more. That's all there is to it really. Some people at a specific time are not able to absorb and put that message into practice by themselves, and the support from these club type businesses can really help.

As with any other business, customer care should be important. Being supportive to customers is pretty vital in the dieting industry, I would have thought, in terms of retaining their custom and getting recommendations.

Personally I love slimming world and its not as simple as 'eat six plates of pasta a day' nor do they sell 'lots of processed crap' they promote healthy eating and a lot of cooking fro scratch.

My husband and I have both lost 2 & 1/2 stones and have never felt better!

DontTurnAround · 15/09/2014 12:57

I also hate people calling weight loss groups 'fat class' they are not fat class. They are a slimming group. You have fat you are NOT fat.

You have fingernails it doesn't mean you are fingernails! And if that is the way you view your class maybe its not the place for you.

HibiscusIsland · 15/09/2014 13:19

Slimming World has worked brilliantly for me. I eat much more healthily on it and I simply don't have the willpower to do so without the motivation of the classes. I wouldn't have got overweight in the first place if I did. Having said that a tenner is too much to replace the book. I assume they do this to deter people from selling their old book on ebay, but as you were showing them the book covered in serum it was obvious you couldn't do that. They probably feel they have to have the same rule for everyone.

bakingtins · 15/09/2014 13:45

I don't agree SW try to sell you their products - the only branded food I can think of is their Hi-Fi bars and the plan encourages cooking from scratch. It would be difficult to stick to plan eating processed foods because it all has high- syn values and you are supposed to base all meals on free foods, with at least a third of each meal fruit and veg. So whilst you don't have to weigh the pasta, you only have 2/3 of a plate to fill with pasta and home - made sauce.
Agree that 'syns' is a terrible name though, and 'body magic' (boak)

iklboo · 15/09/2014 13:56

It will be that particular consultant, not Slimming World itself. Ours is happy to replace your booklet if you lose it / mess it up.

The book doesn't have plans in for you, as such. It has tips & advice on how to make your own plans.

I've lost 5.5 stone, DH just over 6. And it's staying off.
