To have a glass of wine?

It's more of a WWYD.
I will be flying 9h with my 2y old DS and DH. I'm a nervous flyer and can get really anxious if there is any turbulence for example.
Wine works, it really helps me relax a bid and generally makes it more bearable. But I'm not keen on drinking when looking after DS, I mean I never drink when looking after DS. And even though I don't think I am, there is a slight chance that I could be pregnant (although probably not).
So should I have a glass or 2 on the plane or not?
DH will obviously be there and share looking after DS, but he also doesn't get how I could get anxious about flying and is not very supportive in that.

Is there anything else you can try to help with the anxiety? Rescue Remedy?
If there is a slight chance you may be pregnant I wouldn't drink any wine.

Yes. A glass or two to relax is absolutely fine. You haven't got to drive anywhere and your DH is there.

Isn't it law to drink alcohol before and during flying? Even if its 6am? Grin

I would, Im a terrible flier as well.

Definitely have a drink! I am a terribly nervous flier and alcohol works wonders.....

I flew on my own with the DCs this summer and as soon as we'd taken off the air hostess came and gave me a very strong gin and told me to neck it and she'd keep an eye on the kids!!!

Thanks for the replies, I really feel like knowing I could have a glass of wine just makes me less anxious even thinking about the flight.
I so wish I could get rid of this fear of flying completely!
For a few years I actually felt like I was over it, but then it came back after DS was born...

I have never tried Rescue Remedy, does this work?
I have once tried diazepam and it made me feel absolutely horrible.

I say go for it. Your DH will be there to help with DS and he is clearly no use to you in the helping-to-relax stakes!

Rescue remedy has an alcohol base so don't take it if you are avoiding alcohol. It just makes me sleepy, which may of course be exactly what's required.

Hypnotherapy has meant DH can fly without gin - might be worth investigating. For this flight I'd say have a glass of wine.

When flying with a toddler its obligatory to have a glass of wine. Fact.

Also as others have suggested, try hypnotherapy - has really worked for friends of mine

How many session did it take Testing? I was awful this year, it got to the point where I nearly didn't get on the plane. I really need to sort it out, we're expats and I have to fly so my DCs can see their GPs and family and friends.....

I hate flying and always have a few. But do drink water as well to avoid dehydration and move your legs, to avoid dvt.

I'm a bit apprehensive about hypnotherapy, but I have actually considered it in the past for arachnophobia, not flying.
It's pretty expensive though, and I don't think it's guaranteed, but I would love to hear positive experiences with it.

JoeandMax I feel for you! Or should say "i know how you feel"
In days (weeks) leading up to the flight i have started to notice every little thing as a potential "sign" that i shouldn't fly.

I hate flying too. Lovely DP always furnishes me with a massive bloody mary before getting on the plane. And then allows me to sleep. it sort of works.

It is expensive but I've tried diazepam, the online courses etc and am getting worse each flight!

I owe it to my DCs to try anything, we live in a great place for travelling when they get a bit older and I desperately don't want my phobia to limit their opportunities......

I shall report back!

Maybe do a pregnancy test JIC and then if you aren't have one glass to help calm your nerves

I just found another online course and this one seems better as it's more focused on the anxiety.
I just went through it and saved the exercises too. I think it might actually help.
But still think that wine will be needed.

What is JIC?
