To have a glass of wine?

It's more of a WWYD.
I will be flying 9h with my 2y old DS and DH. I'm a nervous flyer and can get really anxious if there is any turbulence for example.
Wine works, it really helps me relax a bid and generally makes it more bearable. But I'm not keen on drinking when looking after DS, I mean I never drink when looking after DS. And even though I don't think I am, there is a slight chance that I could be pregnant (although probably not).
So should I have a glass or 2 on the plane or not?
DH will obviously be there and share looking after DS, but he also doesn't get how I could get anxious about flying and is not very supportive in that.

Is there anything else you can try to help with the anxiety? Rescue Remedy?
If there is a slight chance you may be pregnant I wouldn't drink any wine.
Good luck.

Elderflowergranita · 12/09/2014 09:55

I'd fire ahead with the wine, personally. Smile

Flexly · 12/09/2014 11:13

Lord yes! Especially as your DH will be travelling with you. Enjoy!

Bowlersarm · 12/09/2014 11:15

Yes. A glass or two to relax is absolutely fine. You haven't got to drive anywhere and your DH is there.

Mrsjayy · 12/09/2014 11:17

You are not goi g to be drunk in charge of a toddlerGrin its just a glass of wine and his dad is there too enjoy your wine and holiday v

LumpenproletariatAndProud · 12/09/2014 11:19

Isn't it law to drink alcohol before and during flying? Even if its 6am? Grin

I would, Im a terrible flier as well.

JoandMax · 12/09/2014 11:27

Definitely have a drink! I am a terribly nervous flier and alcohol works wonders.....

I flew on my own with the DCs this summer and as soon as we'd taken off the air hostess came and gave me a very strong gin and told me to neck it and she'd keep an eye on the kids!!!

onemiddlefinger · 12/09/2014 11:28

Thanks for the replies, I really feel like knowing I could have a glass of wine just makes me less anxious even thinking about the flight.
I so wish I could get rid of this fear of flying completely!
For a few years I actually felt like I was over it, but then it came back after DS was born...

I have never tried Rescue Remedy, does this work?
I have once tried diazepam and it made me feel absolutely horrible.

russiandwarf · 12/09/2014 11:31

I say go for it. Your DH will be there to help with DS and he is clearly no use to you in the helping-to-relax stakes!

I recommend this book as well - Feel The Fear And Do It Anyway: How to Turn Your Fear and Indecision into Confidence and Action by Susan Jeffers

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 12/09/2014 11:32

Rescue remedy has an alcohol base so don't take it if you are avoiding alcohol. It just makes me sleepy, which may of course be exactly what's required.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 12/09/2014 11:41

Hypnotherapy has meant DH can fly without gin - might be worth investigating. For this flight I'd say have a glass of wine.

dinkystinky · 12/09/2014 11:46

When flying with a toddler its obligatory to have a glass of wine. Fact.

Also as others have suggested, try hypnotherapy - has really worked for friends of mine

JoandMax · 12/09/2014 11:47

How many session did it take Testing? I was awful this year, it got to the point where I nearly didn't get on the plane. I really need to sort it out, we're expats and I have to fly so my DCs can see their GPs and family and friends.....

LineRunner · 12/09/2014 11:48

I hate flying and always have a few. But do drink water as well to avoid dehydration and move your legs, to avoid dvt.

strongwhitetea · 12/09/2014 11:53

Oooh go for it!

onemiddlefinger · 12/09/2014 11:57

I'm a bit apprehensive about hypnotherapy, but I have actually considered it in the past for arachnophobia, not flying.
It's pretty expensive though, and I don't think it's guaranteed, but I would love to hear positive experiences with it.

JoeandMax I feel for you! Or should say "i know how you feel"
In days (weeks) leading up to the flight i have started to notice every little thing as a potential "sign" that i shouldn't fly.

murasaki · 12/09/2014 12:02

I hate flying too. Lovely DP always furnishes me with a massive bloody mary before getting on the plane. And then allows me to sleep. it sort of works.

GreenPetal94 · 12/09/2014 12:02

I'd have the wine.

JoandMax · 12/09/2014 12:05

It is expensive but I've tried diazepam, the online courses etc and am getting worse each flight!

I owe it to my DCs to try anything, we live in a great place for travelling when they get a bit older and I desperately don't want my phobia to limit their opportunities......

I shall report back!

onemiddlefinger · 12/09/2014 12:10

JoeandMax Could you post a link to thew online course you have done (even if it didn't help much)?
I have done this one www.fearofflyinghelp.com/intro.shtml, and thought that it helped slightly.

OP posts:
Discopanda · 12/09/2014 12:38

Maybe do a pregnancy test JIC and then if you aren't have one glass to help calm your nerves

onemiddlefinger · 12/09/2014 15:18

I just found another online course and this one seems better as it's more focused on the anxiety.
I just went through it and saved the exercises too. I think it might actually help.
But still think that wine will be needed.

What is JIC?

OP posts:
onemiddlefinger · 12/09/2014 15:19

oh, yes, forgot the link to the course:

JoandMax · 13/09/2014 04:09

It was your first link one! Didn't work for me at all..........

Will take a look at the other one too, we will defeat this fear somehow!!!
