MiL is called Ma by her doting sons. It really grates, not sure why. Now my 5 year old DD has picked it up and calls me it constantly, Ma this, Ma that. I've asked her to call me Mum but she keeps reverting back, so now our conversations start 'Ma' 'mum' 'sorry, mum. Mum, Ma, mum I meant argh!' AIBU and way too controlling?! Should I just force a smile and hope this will pass? Or should I stand my ground and escalate the correcting to not responding to all Ma references for as long as it takes?!

Tardis :), I was just blethering and not linking my reply to any one post. It has really stuck with me, being called granny by my (step) dad and Im all kind of like - oh my, look at me, Im a granny.

Honest :)

calls

Just leave it. Surely it's not that important and the more you make a fuss about it the less likely she is to stop doing it.

I think ma is quite sweet but if you don't like it, I would just do what FamiliesShareGerms said and keep saying that MIL is ma and I'm mum/mummy. I'm currently trying to get my 3 year old to stop whining "muuuuuuuum" and drawing it out as long as possible.

I'm 'momma' to my 16 year old. Insider joke that's stuck. She's bubba, many derivatives of, or one of her too-twee-for-words nicknames I have for her. If she calls me mum or I call her by her real name we get so confused!

I've been many names over the years, none of which have bothered me. Ma wouldn't have, although she never used that.

My own mum refused to be grandma, gran, granny, nan or nanny when daughter was wee. Nanna (specifically with 2 n's) and nanna only. It's a pita finding a card I can tell you!! [too disorganised/not arsed enough for moonpig] Wink

Ds2 calls me Ma to wind me up. ( a kick up the arse sorts him out) ( he's 23 btw)
At least it's not mam.

My dd's like to call me "mmmuuuttthhheeeerrr" in as creepy voice as possible. To which I always reply "yes Dave/Jim bob/ Gary" or whichever man's name I happen to find amusing that day. We all have a giggle and are soon back to mum or mummy, not fussed which.
