to think dp is wrong and I am right? - involves indicating round roundabouts

Right in these scenarios who is right?

Going round an island with 2 exits to take the second exit you indicate right until you have passed the first junction you indicate left, this is what I do, dp thinks you just continue indicate right even when exiting. This goes the same for 3rd, 4th, 5th etc you indicate right until you pass tbe junction before then left to indicate you're leaving the roundabout

When going straight on at a roundabout you don't indicate until you are past the last junction before yours you indicate left, so if there are 3 exits you start to indicate left after junction 1 to come off at junction 2, dp doesn't indicate at all.

Not exciting, but please prove me right. He is being a douche.

Yes you are right. Your husband is wrong. Why not buy him a copy of the highway code for his next birthday, with relevant bits highlighted?

georgieporgie1 · 11/09/2014 21:01

YANBU - you are absolutely right!

BastardGoDarkly · 11/09/2014 21:02

You're right, he's a douche!

If you keep indicating right, everyone's going to be caught out when you take the exit Confused

CrohnicallyPissedOff · 11/09/2014 21:02

You only indicate right on entering the roundabout if you are taking the last exit or going all the way round. You indicate left after passing the exit before yours. Doesn't matter if the exits appear to be left, straight on or right, the same basic 2 rules apply. You are more right than he is.

soapboxqueen · 11/09/2014 21:02

You are right. Husband wrong.

CrohnicallyPissedOff · 11/09/2014 21:03

www.gov.uk/using-the-road-159-to-203/roundabouts-184-to-190

Rule 186 explains it

MyFairyKing · 11/09/2014 21:03

You are right. Your husband is a PITA driver IMO.

eddielizzard · 11/09/2014 21:03

you are right. and i am the expert because i frequently have arguments with my dh about his very poor understanding of the highway code in this regard.

PersonOfInterest · 11/09/2014 21:03

You're right. He's wrong.

rallytog1 · 11/09/2014 21:04

Your dh is the reason why so many accidents happen on roundabouts. It's very simple - taking an exit from a roundabout is always turning left. Therefore to do it while indicating right makes you a douche of the highest order.

zanashar · 11/09/2014 21:05

Yep, he's a total douche! My DH doesn't even call them roundabouts, and insists that they are " turning circles" ( that's the NI for you!) still pmsl every time he calls them that!

mumpleasemayi · 11/09/2014 21:06

Your way is the right way. I passed my driving test last week and that was the way I was taught.

puntasticusername · 11/09/2014 21:06

You are right. Drives me up the WALL when people do it your DH's way. If you signal right all the bloody way around, how the eff is anyone supposed to know where you actually intend to leave the roundabout? Does he imagine that drivers waiting to join the roundabout at the exit at which he is leaving, have switched on their Psychic so they know that his signalling Right actually means Left, and they can safely prepare to join the roundabout...

I may be allowing this to get to me a little too much. But it is stupid Grin

HighwayDragon · 11/09/2014 21:07

thanks all, he's a twat, we argue frequently about this in the car Hmm

Backtotherealworld · 11/09/2014 21:12

OP, you are right unless I've been doing it wrong for the last 20 odd years Grin

HighwayDragon · 11/09/2014 21:20

punt that is exactly my point!

LatteLoverLovesLattes · 11/09/2014 21:21

What kind of a muppet did you marry? Grin Eejit.

People around here seem to have solved the problem - they just don't bloody indicate!

Iggly · 11/09/2014 21:22

My dh does this sometimes then complains about poor signalling when.other drivers do it Hmm

He's getting better though

poorfoxyloxy · 11/09/2014 21:22

my other half does this as well, I only started driving in this country 5 years ago and it winds me up when people are essentially indicating the wrong way when they exit roundabout!!

Aherdofmims · 11/09/2014 21:22

You are right. Where did he learn to drive?

Daddypigsgusset · 11/09/2014 21:24

Do you indicate right at a roundabout if there is no right turn ie. just a left and straight on turn?

HighwayDragon · 11/09/2014 21:24

In a northern town 8 years ago, so basically the 60's Grin

MrsMook · 11/09/2014 21:25

You are correct. If someone indicates right only, other drivers may not know where the car came from and how far round to the right they are.

Unfortunately there's an awful, illogical roundabout near me with road markings suggesting that all 5 junctions are in the left lane. This isn't practical. Most cars move left for turning 5 when they are between 3 and 4 (or no one would ever get out of 3). When I did this the other day, someone pulled out of 4 infront of me, assuming I was turning off at 4, which was not consistent with my road position and speed. I cancelled the indicators ASAP to minimise potential for confusion. It's one of those junctions that requires double checking as whatever you do you're doomed! I wish someone who had read a highway code would come along with some white paint and make it logical!

pointythings · 11/09/2014 21:31

You are correct (I sense a unanimous AIBU coming on here) - and what's more, it's no different in other countries. I learned to drive in Holland, passed my test there, and other than the fact that you go round counterclockwise over there, the indicating protocol is exactly the same.

I swear at people like your DH and then turn my music up louder to counteract the road rage. Suggest he studies his Highway Code.

minkymuskyslyoldstoaty · 11/09/2014 21:31

daddypigsgusset, in that situation i would only indicate left on approach if i were taking the left turn. i wouldn't indicate at all if i were going straight on.
