to think dp is wrong and I am right? - involves indicating round roundabouts

Right in these scenarios who is right?

Going round an island with 2 exits to take the second exit you indicate right until you have passed the first junction you indicate left, this is what I do, dp thinks you just continue indicate right even when exiting. This goes the same for 3rd, 4th, 5th etc you indicate right until you pass tbe junction before then left to indicate you're leaving the roundabout

When going straight on at a roundabout you don't indicate until you are past the last junction before yours you indicate left, so if there are 3 exits you start to indicate left after junction 1 to come off at junction 2, dp doesn't indicate at all.

Not exciting, but please prove me right. He is being a douche.

They can beep till they're blue in the face, but you can be smug because you are right Grin

BigBoobiedBertha · 12/09/2014 12:28

This sort of confirms what I already know - too many people don't know how to drive round a roundabout. Your DH is completely wrong, of course but I had just assumed that people who drive like he is suggesting either get confused or forget to change their indicators. I didn't realise that that people actually thought his way was the right way. Shock

I swear sometimes I feel like I am the only one on a roundabout who knows what they are doing. Nice to see so many of us know the right way of doing things. Wink

HaroldsBishop · 12/09/2014 12:33

bonkers - just had a closer look on google maps and I'm sure you are right, especially as the continuation of the main road A1307 is the third exit. Ignore the beepers!

Just thought of another annoying thing at roundabouts: where there are more than one lane on the entrance and you're in the left lane, and the people in the lanes to your right ignore the lines and keep edging forward meaning you can't see what's coming Angry

MewlingQuim · 12/09/2014 12:40

Arrgh I hate it when people don't use indicators.

They are for INDICATING where you are going, FFS the clue is in the name!

Let's form a society!

BigBoobiedBertha · 12/09/2014 12:45

We have a roundabout here where I actually think the road markings are all wrong. It is a 6 exit roundabout but apparently you aren't supposed to go in the right hand lane to exit on the 3rd exit. I would say that it was more than half way round from the lane you start in which is the other thing I remember from my driving lessons. If the exit is more than half way round, go in the right hand lane and indicate right.

I don't go that way much to avoid that roundabout because it just annoys me and it is busy anyway.

WitchWay · 12/09/2014 12:46

Some daft woman in a soft top car swerved across unexpectedly in front of me today, to park in front of the village shop. I wound down my window & shouted "Your indicators are broken"

She was Angry

Whilst we are on the topic of roundabouts, can I just mention one that has been driving me up the wall.

There are priority rules for dealing with the situation where there are cars at all three/four/whatever roads onto a mini roundabout. We don't all have to effing sit there staring at each other. So many times in my town I know I don't have priority but end up going after we've all had a nice sit at the roundabout.

Also, whilst I am at it, know how wide your jeffing car is. Half the traffic jams on my school run are caused as people wait and gesture one another through roads that can easily take two passing cars as well as one that is parked.

And breathe.

Charliebitmyfinger · 12/09/2014 12:54

I hope this thread does not go round in circles Grin

WitchWay · 12/09/2014 12:59

Penguins yes I often "take control" at the local min-roundabout

& agree about people who think their car must be as wide as a bus - often I'll nip through a gap in my Forester to have someone in a much smaller Fiesta or Mini hesitating behind as they don't think they'll fit - My car is bigger & you've just watched me go through Confused

BoulevardOfBrokenSleep · 12/09/2014 13:04

"There are priority rules for dealing with the situation where there are cars at all three/four/whatever roads onto a mini roundabout."

Are there?! Tell me more!

There is a double mini roundabout near us and we often end up in a situation with someone poised at each of the entrances. DH calls it a mexican standoff.

I always assumed the most assertive person me had the right of way, but there are rules?!

WitchWay · 12/09/2014 13:07

Everyone gives way to the person on their right, so if 4 people are stationary they are each giving way to the next stationary car on the right.

On a proper roundabout you give way to traffic on the right as it comes round the roundabout, so it is already moving. A mini roundabout is too small to have traffic moving round it for long so everything grinds to a halt.

If some one moves, then the giving way rules start working again - phew! Grin

Scholes34 · 12/09/2014 13:12

The only thing useless about indicators is the person not using them.

Charliebitmyfinger · 12/09/2014 13:17

Grin Grin at "Mexican Stand Off"

PenguinsIsSleepDeprived · 12/09/2014 13:20

We also call it a Mexican stand-off.

Also, you are not part of the priority rules until you actually arrive at the junction. You rarely all arrive at the junction exactly simultaneously. But what often happens is that someone applies the 'give way' rule to a car a little way off, then you are all sitting at the junction at the same time. Not advocating cutting people up, but if there is time for you to be safely on you way out before the other person even reaches the white line, you don't need to all sit there.

Wellwellwell3holesintheground · 12/09/2014 13:33

OP - how does he feel about box junctions? And motorbikes in the cyclist bit by traffic lights?

Sometimes traffic pedantry is the only thing that gets me through the day.

specialsubject · 12/09/2014 13:47

sounds like he's one of those that may not have had accidents, but have seen plenty.

tell him to go read the highway code and hide the car keys until he has.

Trinpy · 12/09/2014 13:58

I wonder how all these people manage to pass their driving test when they're incapable of using roundabouts correctly.

There's a roundabout near us which I have to cross (1st and 2nd exits) to get into town. Almost no one seems to be able to use it properly. Most drivers seem to just pick a lane at random, and of course, never, ever indicate. I rant to dh about it every time we go shopping Grin.

Trinpy · 12/09/2014 14:00

Sorry I just realised that made no sense - I meant 1st and 2nd exits from the direction I'm approaching as a pedestrian Blush.

PenguinsIsSleepDeprived · 12/09/2014 14:06

Also, indicating right when you are going left is bloody dangerous for any pedestrians. That post has just reminded me that the DD's and I were nearly run down the other day by someone who was indicating right (i.e. not coming off at the exit we were crossing) and who suddenly came off. I might possibly have taught the kids some new swear words

MargotLovedTom · 12/09/2014 14:11

WitchWay and Penguins - I said the same about mini roundabouts up thread. The one near us usually has cars arriving at the same time (high traffic area) and there are regularly Mexican stand offs. Then you see everyone simultaneously think FFS! and all attempt to pull out at the same time. Ridiculous. It needs to be replaced by traffic lights or something.

BigBoobiedBertha · 12/09/2014 14:16

My DC are familiar of the Mexican Stand-off as well. I might have mentioned it from time to time!!

The worst one is a smallish one near my parents' house where frequently, I will come up to the roundabout to find 2 other cars stopped at the other 2 lanes looking at each other so I just carry on. I think some of the time the problem stems from the fact that they seem unable to indicate. On that roundabout you either indicate left or right as they are the only two options. People don't and it all grinds to a halt. Usually it is little old ladies are the worst (shoot me if I get like that in my dotage) but there are plenty of other people who do the same. Weird.

Really small roundabouts don't pose the same problem. People just ignore them most of the time!

PenguinsIsSleepDeprived · 12/09/2014 14:27

Sorry Margot. Missed your post Smile

MargotLovedTom · 12/09/2014 14:29

No worries. I'm glad I'm not the only one who gets the rage about them!

gobbin · 12/09/2014 15:31

bonkers I think you've come across a 'local roundabout, for local people' i.e. no matter what the general rules, THIS is how we actually use our roundabout.

We used to have two like that (St Mellons and Ystrad Mynach in S Wales) where the council had the audacity to paint arrows on the approach lanes which was CONTRARY TO HOW WE DRIVE THAT ROUNDABOUT EVERY DAY! Caused chaos the first few weeks...
