to think £348 is ridiculously expensive for a highstreet handbag?

I was just looking on the All Saints website, see a beautiful bag and then I see the price tag £348! For a bag off the high street that seems ridiculously expensive to me.

I would definitely pay (and more) that for Chloé/McQueen/Chanel etc

Aibu to think that price is ridiculous?

(Just to point out I do not own a closet full of designer handbags Grin)

It is very steep for a non premium designer handbag

It probably cost a tenner to make in some LEDC urban hell hole of a factory.

KateSpade · 09/09/2014 18:53

Was it from an Email they sent you by any chance, as I clicked the link, loved it, but thought exactly the same!

Disclaimer: I do own a few designer handbags & have paid a lot more money for a few in my possession!

specialsubject · 09/09/2014 18:54

what Cant said.

no law against overcharging for optional items.

Caly2014 · 09/09/2014 18:57

I've paid £250ish for a bag from Whistles before as I wanted a leather bag that would last for ages (2 years so far and still looks nearly new).

Leather bags from the cheaper end of the high street are usually a VERY thin leather that will scuff or lose shape quickly. However, I wouldn't go to £350 for a high street bag.

(As an aside, Mary Portas has a range of quality leather bags at House of Fraser in the £150 region so good value)

SailorEverRose · 09/09/2014 19:10

You would be looking at closer to £600+ for designer

I know how much they retail for, hence why I put I would pay that and more

I would say All Saints are a bit higher up the chain than high street, but they are very overpriced for a lot of their items.

Can't get a Chanel for under £1000

I have several designer handbags, quality good but won't even try to justify cost! The £300 mark is a tricky one as not designer but still expensive. Would expect lower end aspinall, good condition ion preloved designer for that sort of price.

Laquila · 09/09/2014 20:36

I take your point but all handbags are designed somewhere along the line - the distinction between designer and high street is fairly arbitrary, IMO, and there's fit to be a grey area somewhere. What about collaborations between high street retailers and high-end designers? I think really you just have to look at the item in question and ask whether it's worth that to you.

Nothanks18 · 09/09/2014 20:40

Can really recommend preloved.....all the quality but not the price tag....bite buying a hardly used, one careful lady driver Mercedes!

DertieBertie · 09/09/2014 20:44

Am I the only person who thinks £348 is too much for a handbag, full stop?

DragonReena · 09/09/2014 20:44

For All Saints I would say yes, it's pricey! My Michael Kors handbag was about £300 (it was a one off gift that I'm very, very grateful for). Obviously MK isn't on the levels of Mulberry but I'd say that £348 is more what I would expect to pay for that than All Saints.

LittleprincessinGOLDrocks · 09/09/2014 20:53

That is a lot, especially when you can get Radley bags much cheaper than that.

valrhona · 09/09/2014 20:57

I had 3 very lovely bags (balenciaga) that I bought new outright in the Celtic Tiger days. I sold one on since for almost what I'd paid for it.

Have just put a deposit on a layaway beautiful patent mulberry bayswater (preloved but fantastic condition) - it costs €400 but I'll have paid for it at Christmas and I'm looking forward to it. Classic bag, won't go out of style.
I wear fairly neutral clothes so spend a bit on hair, scarves, shoes and bags. It's worth it to me.

PhaedraIsMyName · 09/09/2014 21:12

I have Lulu Guinness bags in that price range.

PiperIsOrange · 09/09/2014 21:14

That's almost some bodies rent for the month Shock

Cantbelievethisishappening · 09/09/2014 21:15

Dertie I think 50 quid is too much.

bodhranbae · 09/09/2014 21:17

I just got a lovely bag in the RSPCA shop for £2.99

F0ssil · 09/09/2014 21:21

I dont think they get any better or nicer after 500. (My most expensive handbag was £80. ) :-/

picnicbasketcase · 09/09/2014 21:24

I don't get the bag thing at all. I click on the links people post to Mulberry bags or whatever, '£900 for this, isn't it beauuuuuutiful?' and I'm utterly baffled, because they all look pretty much the same as the ones you could get in George for £20. They have a strap and some pocket bits, and will eventually be full of receipts, keys, loose change and escaped bits of random Wrigleys Extra.

So, yes, that's expensive for a bag.

Itsfab · 09/09/2014 21:24

I paid £79 for a bag as wanted a nice one that could do what I needed it too. Have had it for years, still looks good, is leather and will be the most expensive bag I ever buy. I had been searching for the illusive perfect bag for years and haven't bought a bag since. Have loads of unwanted bags in the loft now.

BioSuisse · 09/09/2014 21:25

I read an article a while ago about why the high st has yanked up it's handbag prices these last few years. I will look for it.

From what i remember it was only about brands trying to reposition themselves so purely a marketing decice. No special fabric, craftmanship or design work than used few years ago when hand bag prices were not through the roof.
