To buy this as a wedding anniversary present for DH?

Posting here for higher traffic.
My DH and I have been married 5 years this October, which is wood. He has always wanted a rocking chair and seeing as it's kind of a special year I thought I would splash out on him a little bit. Would anyone think this would look weird in a living room? There was one in the maternity ward when I had DS and they are sooo relaxing!

I wouldn't have it in my sitting room. It looks like a feeding chair. But if you like it go for it. Everyone has their own taste.

CoffeeChocolateWine · 08/09/2014 13:32

Yes, I would, sorry. It's a feeding chair. I think the idea of getting a rocking chair is lovely especially if your DH has always wanted one, but this would look a bit strange to me.

seasavage · 08/09/2014 14:32

It's a chair so it would be fine. (Nothing about this screams solely feeding to me) My mum has two by the french doors in her kitchen. They are nice. Is that the sort of rocking chair he wants?

AliceLidl · 08/09/2014 14:37

It does look like a nursery chair, but could you afford to recover it in a different fabric to make it fit in?

DoJo · 08/09/2014 15:56

I don't think there's anything about it that marks it out as a feeding chair - if it's to your taste and you know it's comfy, then why not?

minibmw2010 · 08/09/2014 15:59

Very very like a feeding chair, I def wouldn't think it would look nice in a living room ... Ikea do a lovely wooden rocking chair that is a bit more funky?

JeanSeberg · 08/09/2014 16:06

It seems odd that you've chosen this particular chair when there are hundreds of wooden rocking chairs to choose from.

Is that mothercare one even a rocking chair? It looks like something for the elderly.

ShatnersBassoon · 08/09/2014 16:06

Do you think it's something your husband would choose for himself?

loudarts · 08/09/2014 16:08

I've got one in my living room, did buy it to feed ds in but now just use it as a rocking chair. The dcs love it too.

backbystealth · 08/09/2014 16:10

Ummm well you asked...no I would hate that in my living room or for a gift!

Can't you find a cooler, nicer, less feeding-y glider/rocker?

My dh wouldn't like that but obvs I don't know yours!

WD41 · 08/09/2014 16:11

There must be thousands of rocking chairs nicer than that, sorry

Gubbins · 08/09/2014 16:11

The glider chairs are wonderfully relaxing, but I'd assume that if someone told me they wanted a rocking chair that they wanted a trad, wooden chair like the ones Jean has linked to. Or possibly one OF the upholstered mid-century style. Of course then you have the potential for finger and pet tail trappage under the rockers. They take up quite a bit of room, too.

sillymillyb · 08/09/2014 16:18

I have that exact chair in ds bedroom for feeding. It wouldn't make it down into my living room, but it's very comfy.

LadyLuck10 · 08/09/2014 16:19

I wouldn't either. I've only seen this used for feeding or very old people. There must be something else you could think of using wood.

DH wants one of these, every time we go shopping for baby stuff he manages to find one and sits init while I shop Shock I wouldn't have it in the living room but would stretch to our bedroom to save him being banished to the nursery on it.

firesidechat · 08/09/2014 16:33

Those glider ones are wonderful. My friend had one as a present from her husband and her baby feeding days were well over. It's just a chair, although you may want to look in other places for one and avoid the Mothercare connection.

MsAnthropic · 08/09/2014 16:36

I had a glider for nursing similar to that and they are super relaxing and comfortable, although funnily enough I didn't use it much. I wouldn't want it in my sitting room because I think they look like either maternity or geriatric care equipment, but if you like it and you're happy with it and your DH will like it then do it Smile. None of naysayers will have to gaze upon it!

firesidechat · 08/09/2014 16:36

I've just googled glider rocking chairs and they are all marketed to feeding mothers. I don't get it.

As someone else said, I would check that he wants this type and not the traditional style.

SistersOfPercy · 08/09/2014 16:41

I'd scour local antique shops for something a bit more traditional personally.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 08/09/2014 16:42

I like this one. It says it's extra large size so might be better for a man.. It suggests the kitchen but I think would be nice in living room too.

I imagine this when I think of rocking chairs

bonkersLFDT20 · 08/09/2014 16:48

Looks like a nursing chair to me. I had one very similar (maybe the same) and they are not great quality. I couldn't remove the covers to wash and they didn't fit very well. Also if you have small children the fear of them trapping their fingers is huge [shudder].
Oh and look at the dimensions. They are pretty narrow and I am not a wide person.

Having said all that, they are really comfortable!

WantonMother · 08/09/2014 17:15

Thanks guys. Yeah, it's the nursing feel that is putting me off! If it was purely based on comfort, I would go for it without hesitation but I admit, I have only seen them in nurseries...
I do like the idea of covering it alice, thanks!
Glad I asked, hadn't considered the finger danger bonkers but now you've pointed it out I'm cringing!!!
My first port of call was Ikea but a friend of mine has this one www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/90279516/
but was annoyed it smells of copydex (there's a certain fishy quality to the smell too) from the manufacturing process which puts me off Ikea.
I really like the links people have put up but they just seem a bit less comfy, even if I did buy a cushion for it...
I'm still undecided. Now hunting for a less geriatric/nursing version of a glider chair but I reckon it will be difficult!
