are we mean not to let a neighbour have one of our bins?

Bin day yesterday and some woman who lives on the corner of our street but classed as the next street is claiming to have had her bin stolen, she has apparently phoned for a new one and wanting to charge her 30 for a new one. So today in the pouring rain shes been wondering round looking in everyones gardens for her bin.

She knocked at my door and she was polite about it but I didnt like the way she just presumed she could have my 2nd bin. Ive always had 2 main bins since moving here and by the stickers on them she knows one of them isnt hers. She doesnt think its fair ive got 2 bins and basically wanted one of them, told her no because I use both bins there are 6 of us in my ouse and baby on way both are regually filled aswell as my recycle bins. I was explaining all this and trying to be polite but OH more or less told her to do one and shut door. Felt a bit tight and abit embarrased that OH was rude to her, but felt bit better that I saw another neighbour send her packing. Thought she was a bit cheeky though just wondering about in peoples gardens then knocking.

I understand her frustration though, cant believe council are now charging for new bins no matter what circumstances for not having one are

No need for you to give her your bin, or feel so sensitive about her search for hers. How else is she going to locate the one that's gone missing? Knocking at your door wasn't a personal attack. The likelihood is that the refuse collection team put it back in the wrong place. She just wants to save herself £30.

MidniteScribbler · 06/09/2014 23:08

That 30 pounds might be the difference between paying her rent or not this week. She is not unreasonable to go looking for her bin. You are not unreasonable to not give her your second one.

crazylady321 · 06/09/2014 23:09

I know and I dont blame her no way would I be happy to pay for a new bin, she just seemed lie she was on a mad mission. Never spoke to her before now cant believe she would feel confident enough to go door knocking like that, I know it wasnt personal.

Why on Earth is this your problem? I'd have told her to do one, too. Not your problem someone stole hers and she has to pay, the cheeky cow.

Are you always this much of a wet lettuce? It's a good thing you've got your OH.

So many doormats on MN.

crazylady321 · 06/09/2014 23:13

Do you really have to be so insulting? No im not a wet lettuce just dont do confrontation with randoms if I can help it and dont really see need to be rude to people at drop of a hat

OP posts:
crazylady321 · 06/09/2014 23:15

I wasnt going to let her have it but yes I was stupid enough to stand for around 5 minutes listening to her moaning

PiperIsOrange · 06/09/2014 23:16

Around here you would have lost your 2nd bin by now.

Yanbu not to give it to her.

rainbowinmyroom · 06/09/2014 23:16

How is it being rude or mean to not let her have a bin? It's not your fault hers is misplaced or stolen and she's a cheek to demand yours. And then you felt like your OH was the one who was tight and rude when he told her no firmly?

She was far from polite to demand yours.

AlpacaLypse · 06/09/2014 23:18

yanbu not to give her your bin but your local council are utter bastards to charge her for the lost stolen or strayed one. name and shame?

elephanteraser · 06/09/2014 23:19

don't see why it would make you a wet lettuce!

she does need to alll council and sort out her bin situation though.

UncleT · 06/09/2014 23:22

rainbow I read it as you being the rude person being referred to there.

crazylady321 · 06/09/2014 23:24

I know but I like to live in Peace and although I dont know her or ever talk to her I have to walk past her house a number of times a day and shes nearly always in her garden (cant believe she didnt notice her bin going) OHs in his car hes not botherd. We are under Calderdale btw

gingerbreadroll · 06/09/2014 23:24

crazylady321 · 06/09/2014 23:27

UncleT- No i felt my OH was rude to her. She called me a wet lettuce as insults go ive had worse :)

rainbowinmyroom · 06/09/2014 23:28

The OH is rude and tight, too, according to the OP. Hmm

crazylady321 · 06/09/2014 23:30

rainbowinmyroom · 06/09/2014 23:32

Our council charges £25 for a new bin.

PiperIsOrange · 06/09/2014 23:33

www.calderdale.gov.uk/environment/waste/household-collections/too-much-waste.html

It's a delivery charge.

thereturnofshoesy · 06/09/2014 23:34

don't worry about it
next time you walk past her house, just smile and say hello
doubt she meant to make you feel bad, eh might be you new freind

crazylady321 · 06/09/2014 23:35

Yep shes right 30 charge for a new bin Shock doesnt state wether there are any exeptions or anything. Will have to keep an eye on my bins cant justify paying that for wheelie bin no wonder people are pinching them

OP posts:
crazylady321 · 06/09/2014 23:38

thereturnofshoesy - Doubt ive made a new friend way she was snarling at me haha, maybe just my hormones making me see things to be more trivial.

OP posts:
rainbowinmyroom · 06/09/2014 23:43

Wow.

Our bin got taken, I sent a message to our council letting them know to the right place and a new one was here the next day!

No charge.

30 quid. Not surprised she's looking for another. Bet she nicks one now! Wink
