To think my friend is being really rude?

Not the end of the world but quite annoying!
I'm having a party tonight for a "milestone" birthday and I've got about 15 people coming over - mostly work mates but three old uni mates as well. Feeling a bit sensitive about having such a low key do for a big birthday, but I don't know many people up here. Sad

I'm very close to one of my old uni mates (male but he's gay, no romance!) and we're very frank with each other but he's managed to piss me off by asking if he could watch X Factor while the party's on.

I thought he was joking at first but eventually explained everyone will be chatting and I was hoping he would chat to some of my work friends, particularly the NQTs - (we're all teachers.)

He got really arsey with me and couldn't understand why I didn't want him sitting in the middle of the party room watching X Factor. I don't have a big house and we'll likely all be in the living room most of the time so having the telly on would be a right conversation killer.

As I said, it's not the end of the world, but AIBU??

Tell him to record it and not to be so bloody anti social.

Humansatnav · 06/09/2014 15:41

YANBU

cailindana · 06/09/2014 15:44

YANBU. He can record it. What an eejit.

Tittifilarious · 06/09/2014 15:44

YANBU although sometimes these kind of programmes are good background noise or an ice breaker if some of your guests don't know each other?

Nanny0gg · 06/09/2014 15:48

Very rude.

CatKisser · 06/09/2014 15:49

Tittifilarious, I did think about that, to be honest, but his reaction annoyed me so I've got to stick to my guns now!! I told him to record it before hanging up so hopefully he won't moan while he's here.

What a knobhead. He does know X Factor is repeated later on ITV2, right?

CatKisser · 06/09/2014 15:53

Yes I told him I'm fairly sure it's repeated ad nauseam over the course of the week!
I'm feeling a bit edgy about having work friend and uni friends there when they don't know each other so the last thing I want is everyone gawping at the TV in silence.

I wouldn't want the TV on in the middle of my party. If he doesn't want to record it, could he not come over after the programme has finished? In case he arrives on time, I would also take the fuse out of the TV so that he can't just switch it on without asking.

CromerSutra · 06/09/2014 17:14

Bloody hell! How rude can you get! Do you sort of wish he wasn't coming now? I think I would. Hope you have a great celebration despite him though!

Partypooper24 · 06/09/2014 17:57

He is being an arse.

Also just wanted to say that 15 people celebrating with you doesn't sound low key to me! It sounds like a nice number.

Groovee · 06/09/2014 17:59

It'll be on ITV2 tomorrow! He's being rude!

Vitalstatistix · 06/09/2014 19:18

surely at a party he wouldn't be able to hear or follow a tv programme

unless - he wasn't planning to demand you are all quiet while it's on, was he?

francesdrake · 06/09/2014 19:20

YANBU. Effectively he's not actually coming to your party, he's making your party sit in at home with him. Just in your home, with your party snacks and booze. RUDE.

SauvignonBlanche · 06/09/2014 19:21

YANBU, he is though! Shock

Mrsgrumble · 06/09/2014 19:21

It's on again tomorrow and it's crap anyway

YANBU

YANBU; I can't believe someone would even ask that. It's unbelievably rude.

ScrambledEggAndToast · 06/09/2014 20:16

Tit

thenightsky · 06/09/2014 20:45

Can you move the party from home to a local hostelry?

SquirrelWearingATrilby · 06/09/2014 20:47

I would have said, OK, see you afterwards.

thenightsky · 06/09/2014 21:08

What squirrel said actually... say come over after XF if it's that important to you. He might get the hint about how rude he's being then.

CatKisser · 07/09/2014 08:57

Just an update. Everyone came over as expected, including XF-Mate. I felt sorry for my uni pals not knowing everyone but soon everyone chatting away and we had an absolutely brilliant night. Grin The Ouzo shots right at the end were perhaps an error of judgement on my part, as I can smell the stuff in my living room.... but really, really brilliant night. With no X factor clearly.
And no hang over, somehow!!!

I also massively over catered so will be eating party food and drinking prosecco for the next week
