For my birthday I made a cake to bring into work, a fresh lemon drizzle cake (contains 4 lemons) and no addatives or nastys.

Anyway one guy at work said his body is a temple and he doesn't eat junk food.

I wanted to slap him, homemade stuff isn't the same as junk food!

Hahahahaha @ Sevenzarkseven Grin

A homemade cake isn't junk food. It's unhealthy, but not junk!

Like PPs, my definition of junk food is packaged stuff with millions of additives and weird chemicals in it. Stuff you couldn't make yourself in your own kitchen.

Passmethecrisps · 03/09/2014 21:06

What a nobber.

His body may well be a temple but his personality is a cesspit.

Homemade cake is a lovely tasty treat. If he hadn't fancied it he could just had said no thanks or maybe later.

I wonder if there are any akshal athletes on MN? What would they do? I bet Paula Radcliffe would eat your cake

grocklebox · 03/09/2014 21:07

its not unhealthy either. Its just food. Normal, home-made, traditional, food.

maggiethemagpie · 03/09/2014 21:29

My definition of junk food is anything you could find in a vending machine. So this would not be junk food but it is definitely not healthy food IMO. I would personally avoid it like the plague (if I was being good) due to high carb and sugar content. If I was being bad I'd probably devour the whole thing.

SquirrelWearingATrilby · 03/09/2014 21:35

Lemon Drizzle Cake is right up there with the best cakes ever!
Ignore your pillock of a colleague.

BitterAndOnlySlightlyTwisted · 03/09/2014 21:40

He was incredibly bloody rude. First off, home-made cake is not effing "junk food". It isn't even "unhealthy" either. The only thing which could make wholesome and delicious home-made cake unhealthy is to eat it to the exclusion of anything else. A once in a while treat is just that: a treat, an occasional indulgence.

Can you tell I'm bloody sick of self-righteous thickos who should know better but don't?

RiverTam · 03/09/2014 21:41

worra - if you think junk is something with little or no nutritional value, would you call cucumber junk? Or celery? Or a glass of water? There's not much to any of them, is there? Grin

he was jolly rude. Nothing wrong with a slice of cake every so often!

ValerieTheVodkaFairy · 03/09/2014 21:44

I'd rip your arm off for a slice of lemon drizzle right now.

Anyway, temples. Lots of animal sacrifice, back in the day. Goats and things. Not a great comparison is it Grin

WorraLiberty · 03/09/2014 21:46

True RiverTam Grin

Straight after I posted it, I thought 'but what about yorkshire puddings? Shock

Bogeyface · 03/09/2014 21:48

Oh I hate sanctimonious toss pots like this! I know a couple of them and one in particular sucks the joy out of absolutely everything. He doesnt want it, body is a temple etc, ok fine. So far so annoying. But he doesnt just say that, he then proceeds to tell everyone who is partaking about the "crap" they are putting into their bodies which is doubly insulting if the "crap" is home made. I once, being slightly drunk and also a piss taking bitch, took a massive bit of the burger I was eating, crammed half a sausage in my mouth and the lit a fag! It was 50/50 on choking to death or vomitting but I made my point! :o

It wouldnt be quite so bad but he is happy to get ratted at these occasions! I found out that his beer of choice is actually not vegan, not told him yet. I am saving that one for when he is being particularly obnoxious!

Bogeyface · 03/09/2014 21:48

Sorry, meant vegetarian not vegan, thats the other tosspot!

RiverTam · 03/09/2014 21:49

you can't call a yorkshire pudding junk Shock!!!!!!!!

Bulbasaur · 03/09/2014 21:50

Anyway one guy at work said his body is a temple and he doesn't eat junk food

He sounds like a lot of fun at office parties.

Ohwhatfuckeryisthis · 03/09/2014 21:51

Whatever, it was fecking rude. A no thank you and a happy birthday is the polite response. (And pass us his share) Flowers

SoftSheen · 03/09/2014 21:52

YANBU.

Homemade cake isn't junk food, it is treat food to be eaten occasionally and in moderation, as part of a healthy balanced diet. It does contain a lot of sugar but also protein, fat, minerals and vitamins.

Junk food contains calories but otherwise little nutritional value e.g. sweets, crisps, high-sugar breakfast cereals etc.

SoftSheen · 03/09/2014 21:53

Happy Birthday BTW Cake Thanks

MiniZilla · 03/09/2014 21:53

People who turn down free homemade cake are not to be trusted.

Bogeyface · 03/09/2014 21:53

Btw, I dont eat cake or biscuits because I dont like them, I just dont have a sweet tooth. So if I am offered some I say that I am a medical miracle, the only woman in the world who doesnt like cake or chocolate! I would hate people to think I was a twat like him.

TheSameBoat · 03/09/2014 21:53

HINBU to think that it's junk food. HIBU to say it though.

BeCool · 03/09/2014 22:08

refined white flour - junk
refined white sugar - junk
butter - preferable to other types of baking fat, but vvv high in sat fat so junk
baking fat - junk
icing sugar - junk

4 lemons does not negate the highly refined ingredients of your cake.

Pretty much most cake is 'junk' food even if it is homemade.

But you colleague was a rude fucker and offensive to boot.

I'll happily have his slice. Cake

on the same theme, there is a lot of "made from scratch' pride here on MN, and whilst I do agree cooking at home is preferable to ready meals, home cooked food can very easily be high in salt, sat fat, refines flour, sugar etc, and yes even "cooked from scratch" food can be junk.

Even organic fat, organic sugar and organic white flour is just fat, sugar and white flour & therefore as far as your body goes it's junk.

DoJo · 03/09/2014 22:09

Bogeyface - you're not alone! I don't like cake either and people are constantly looking at me as though I am a freak, liar or completely barking. (I don't like ice cream either, but don't tell anyone or I will have to hand my ovaries in...)

Aeroflotgirl · 03/09/2014 22:09

Yanbu he sounds very rude and conceited. Send your lemon cake over here Smile

Bogeyface · 03/09/2014 22:11

Oh FFS! Anything is junk if consumed in high enough amounts, because junk is anything that does not give the body what it needs to survive.

If you lived on nothing but brocolli you would end up just as ill as if you consumed nothing but mcdonalds. Just as malnourished just not as fat.

Nothing is junk. Some things are better for you than others, but as long as the things that are not as good nutritionally are not eaten exclusively, there is no problem.

Bogeyface · 03/09/2014 22:11

I realise that sounds like a total contradiciton! what I meant was that anything could be called junk if consumed in high enough amounts.

Tipsykisses · 03/09/2014 22:13

Ignore him op ... Anyone who says homemade lemon drizzle is junk food is really not worth your time Wink

I'll have his ...pretty please & Thanks
