To think that £10K salary for these perks is not a 'crap' salary.

My friend has just turned down a job on these grounds. It is term time only and 5.5 hours a day.

Granted, she doesnt need to work she just wanted some extra 'Pin' money as she put it but she's hugely insulted that they would offer her that salary. I think term time jobs are so thin on the ground its not too shabby.

And yeah I know it's up to her and none of my business. Smile

By the way, I'm a science technician. All the applicants had a degree in science. I got a higher hourly rate as a qualified TA.

bumpybecky · 03/09/2014 21:56

I was thinking it's more than I'm paid for my washing up monkey job, but then EllenJanethickerknickers said the same thing ;) I'm a science technician too, highly qualified but spend most of my time photocopying and washing up!

WrigleysBum · 03/09/2014 22:20

It'sbetterthanabox - school admin.

As a bald figure 11,000 is shite, in the context of hours worked and the convenience of how those hours are distributed through the year...as I said, I feel quite lucky.

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 03/09/2014 23:01

Washing up monkey! Grin That's me, isn't it? And photocopier queen.

You don't need a degree to be a school science tech, but these term time only jobs are like gold dust. Especially if you are divorced with a DC with SN.

Bulbasaur · 03/09/2014 23:06

Well, with child care costs, she might be losing more money than she'd be making.

I'm having a hard time finding (good) work because child care costs X per week and jobs pay less than or about equal to X per week.

bumpybecky · 03/09/2014 23:53

I've made over 6000 copies so far this term and it's only day 3! Not washed anything up yet though :)

Competition for term time only, school based jobs is fierce.

itsbetterthanabox · 03/09/2014 23:54

Ok so if she gets around 780 a month as she's said and works 90 hours a month then that's over £8 an hour.
That is good for admin work. Why do you think it's shit?

MrsCakesPrecognition · 04/09/2014 00:07

I would bite someone's hand off to get a job like that.

taxi4ballet · 08/09/2014 09:44

Welcome to the world of part-time term-time working, OP's friend!

I reckon there are a million or two mums with school age kids who have to take jobs at this salary level despite being well-qualified and able to earn a whole lot more in a full-time position.

Demand outstrips supply and part-time jobs which fit around school hours and holidays are like gold dust. There's a never-ending supply of people who need them - that's why the wages are so low.

Aeroflotgirl · 08/09/2014 09:57

Its not a good salery, it would be very difficult to get a mortgage on that, and to save properly!

RaspberryLemonPavlova · 08/09/2014 10:27

Its about right for a TA job locally. You have to remember its only part time and only term time aeroflotgirl.

It is but its not good. I used to be a TA on £7k pA and I used to be a community worker 8am-5.30pm 4 days a week on £11k, I couldent get a mortgage on that! DH had to supplement it, was paying the lions share on a higher salery £45k. Its what you call pin money really, the job stay at home parents do round school hours.

KeemaNaanAndCurryOn · 08/09/2014 11:56

I wouldn't work those hours for 10k pa.

pudcat · 08/09/2014 12:13

So if she works the same days as the children are in school - that is 190 days. So she is getting £10000 for 190 days work. £52.63 a day. £9.56 an hour. The minimum wage from 1st October will £6.50. So all in all for a convenient school hours job that seems ok to me.

crazykat · 08/09/2014 12:24

If my kids were all full time at school I'd take a job with those wages. Yes it would be a faff with not getting anything done during the day but it would also mean no childcare costs which would be a huge bonus for me.

However if she doesn't need the money then she's free to be choosy and hold out for a job with the wage she wants.

FitzgeraldProtagonist · 08/09/2014 13:03

Imagine the alternative of FT work and FT childcare. Cheapest FT childcare going to cost min £16000 a year. TT job has no/minimal childcare cost. So the £9k (approx) income is clear profit. Equivalent to take home £25000 a year FTjob with childcare costs. And you get to see your kids. Tax credits obv not relevant to OP's friend as not needing the money implies her DP is earning above the threshold.

Bitter! Miss my children, but am their breadwinner, I earn over the threshold for TC, child maintenance covers a sixth of child care costs. She seems to be in a dream situation!
