To think that £10K salary for these perks is not a 'crap' salary.

My friend has just turned down a job on these grounds. It is term time only and 5.5 hours a day.

Granted, she doesnt need to work she just wanted some extra 'Pin' money as she put it but she's hugely insulted that they would offer her that salary. I think term time jobs are so thin on the ground its not too shabby.

And yeah I know it's up to her and none of my business. Smile

I get a take home pay of £530 a month as a yeah ding assistant on 18.45 hrs. I don't pay tax as I don't earn enough. It's just under £10k per annum so no way would she be getting £700+ for that.

TortoiseUpATreeAgain · 03/09/2014 07:39

"If she was getting £780 per month for 5.5 hours per week, term time only, it would be £43 per hour."

Yes, but the OP describes it as 5.5 hours per day, not per week.

GratefulHead · 03/09/2014 07:39

Love auto correct.

As a teaching assistant but loving "yeah ding" as it sounds much more fun.

OneLittleToddleTerror · 03/09/2014 07:41

Um I think it's 5.5 hours including lunch time? I don't know about part time hour calculations. For full time, the lunch time is not factored in. When they say you are contracted for 37.5 hours, it also says core hours are 9-5.30'for example. But if it's excluding lunch hour then it's just 1-1.30 hour less than full time? That's why I though it's actually just 5hr days!

OneLittleToddleTerror · 03/09/2014 07:43

Mine is a response to whatshallwedo that it's 27.5 hour a week. I think it might be inconsistent compared to full time.

OneLittleToddleTerror · 03/09/2014 07:45

wilsbur'can you take the one she turned down?

revealall · 03/09/2014 07:46

Each county has a different amount they pay on each pay scale. I was on £14k which pro rata came down to £9k. That was £729 per month for 25 hours a week.

whatshallwedo · 03/09/2014 07:47

I wouldn't think that she will get a lunch break as you have to work 6 hours before you are entitled to an upaid break. I am guessing, but based on t-t jobs here her hours would likely be 9-2.30 m-f so as to fit in with school times.

SuburbanRhonda · 03/09/2014 07:48

I get around £850 a month for a job in a school. Annual income just under £10000. I work 18 hours, 39 weeks a year. About £12 an hour.

This is because although I'm not paid in the holidays, my pay is spread out over the whole year so I've got money coming in every month.

My FTE salary is about £23,000.

HTH.

SistersOfPercy · 03/09/2014 07:52

Pin money is a term I'm familiar with.

Personally, I wouldn't do it either. I worked on school meals when the kids were little and that worked to 4 hours a day. Frankly it was a pain in the arse. It run from 10.30 to 2.30 and put the kybosh on doing anything else in the day because by the time the school run was done it was time for work and by the time I'd finished it was time to pick them up. I'd much rather have done 2 full days than 5 half ones.
I guess it depends on how badly she needs the money and if she can afford to be choosy.

WhatWouldBlairWaldorfDo · 03/09/2014 07:55

Just regarding the money issue. I work in a school for 25hrs a week. On £9 an hour. I work for 9months of the year (term time only) but get paid over 12. So a bit less every month. I take home £790 a month. Every month.

Snapespotions · 03/09/2014 07:57

Surely it depends on what she earned before and what type of work she is looking for. Confused

SuburbanRhonda · 03/09/2014 07:59

X-post, blair.

I think most schools spread the pay over the whole year because no-one wants not to be paid for 13 weeks a year.

waithorse · 03/09/2014 08:02

Grin at pin money.

Ah rhonda you beat me to it :) i regularly have to explain to people how my wage works. People just dont seem to grasp that i get paid OUT OF MY OWN MONEY in the holidays (yes it is a sore point haha)

WyrdByrd · 03/09/2014 08:09

Tbh 10k pro rata over 5.5 hours and tto is peanuts.

It may have sounded ok then come as a shock when she did the maths!

GratefulHead · 03/09/2014 08:37

Mine is averaged out over 12 months too.

I get the money in the holidays they don't give me in term time.

YourMaNoBraBackOfMyCar · 03/09/2014 09:39

My grandma used to say pin money! Wow that's taken me back. She was a widow surviving on a small pension and little cleaning jobs which she called the earnings pin money.

There will be other dedutions like pension so 10000 could be about 780 per month

yes it is a local govt pension final salary scheme.

StripyBanana · 03/09/2014 11:42

780 a month with no childcare sounds pretty amazing to me. I'm v well educated but childcare would eat up so kuch of my income and I don't want to lose holidays with the children.

An extra 780 in the pot as spending money every month would be AMAZING.

wherr do I sign up?

taxi4ballet · 03/09/2014 11:56

National minimum wage will be £6.50 from 1st October (age 21 and over).

£6.50 x 7.5 hours x 5 days x 48 weeks = £11,700 full-time.

£10,000 pa for 5.5 hours a day for 38 weeks seems reasonably good compared with that.
