To not know what to do with polenta

Idontneedanotherhero · 02/09/2014 16:47

I have a pack of ready made polenta (ie it's already in a block) which I must have bought ages ago as just noticed it was Bbe yesterday. Can anyone suggest anything tasty to do with it that will accompany my pork casserole for this evenings meal, and also will not offend DH who does not like "foreign muck"....

fry it up or cut it up and bake it. It really doesn't taste of much, tbh, I use it more to bulk out a meal. Same with ugali.

Idontneedanotherhero · 02/09/2014 16:52

Is there anything I can put with it? Would cheese work?

Vitalstatistix · 02/09/2014 16:54

yes, it goes with anything really. I haven't found anything it doesn't work with - on account of it not tasting of anything at all Grin

But you do have to cook it properly and eat it right away.

It has a habit of turning to mush Grin

Bin it.

it is vile.

TheListingAttic · 02/09/2014 16:56

Sprinkle of paprika and a drizzle of oil is nice. Or jiggle it in a roasting pan with some grated parmesan. Whack it in a hot oven till it starts to go a bit browned and crispy.

Where the heck did you manage to find block polenta?! Every supermarket I shop in seems to have stopped doing it. It's ruled out my go-to lazy tea of skin-on chicken breast, chopped up polenta and cherry tomatoes all whacked it the oven and ignored for half an hour. Best dinner ever. Harrumph!

YANBU to not know what to do with it, I imagine lots of people wouldn't.
Who thought YWBU?

Vitalstatistix · 02/09/2014 17:09

they have it in Tesco, Listing.

WildThong · 02/09/2014 17:10

Wrap it up carefully in cling film, then chuck it in the bin.

Laquitar · 02/09/2014 17:11

Bin it.
Or give it to the dcs to pretend it is playdough.

It doesn't taste of anything. It is dull and waste of money and energy.

Laquitar · 02/09/2014 17:12

Lol@Wild !

mix with sweetcorn add chilli flakes pat into a baking dish top with cheese and bake tah da ... corn bread

marne2 · 02/09/2014 17:15

You can use it as. Base for a quiche? Tbh it is quite grim unless you use a lot of other flavours with it.

TheListingAttic · 02/09/2014 17:23

That's the one TheRealMaud. Can't believe the lack of love for polenta - although I suppose I do like it drab, stodgy comforting sort of way....

littlepeas · 02/09/2014 17:25

I mash it up with butter and Parmesan - it goes well with meatballs!

Idontneedanotherhero · 02/09/2014 17:36

Hahaha I found it ages ago - was doing BLW and desperate to find things DD would eat, obviously I never tried it with her as just found at back of cupboard!

Idontneedanotherhero · 02/09/2014 17:37

I see it has mixed reviews....

Idontneedanotherhero · 02/09/2014 17:37

I'm going to fry it with onions, garlic and Parmesan and hope that it turns out ok! Thanks all!

Give it to the birds/squirrels or compost it.

MarianneSolong · 02/09/2014 18:30

Good with chicken cacciatore. (Call it chicken casserole so it's not 'foreign'.) No blander than a boiled spud.

indigo18 · 02/09/2014 19:27

Chuck it, it's horrible.
Found it lurking under some beautiful lamb in France lastweek; I dug in with relish thinking it was mashed potato ... :(

Rainbunny · 02/09/2014 20:25

I bought some polenta a while ago and faced the same issue. I found a simple recipe: Cut it into slices and saute to slightly brown it on each side, serve a slice, or two or three on a plate and spoon homemade bolognese sauce over it, top with some shredded parmesan.

That said, I still found it to be somewhat uninspiring tbh. Decided polenta is overhyped.

MrsTerryPratchett · 02/09/2014 20:29

I don't like it but it is good as a vehicle for other things (particularly bue cheese).

SaucyJack · 02/09/2014 20:29

Cut in half and use it as a pair of bookends.
