To not know what to do with polenta

Idontneedanotherhero · 02/09/2014 16:47

I have a pack of ready made polenta (ie it's already in a block) which I must have bought ages ago as just noticed it was Bbe yesterday. Can anyone suggest anything tasty to do with it that will accompany my pork casserole for this evenings meal, and also will not offend DH who does not like "foreign muck"....

Fry it in a pan with plenty of olive oil- then chuck a load of sea salt and rosemary on it- lovely I promise

I like it, I rarely get it though as DH hates it.

I like it sliced into chips or cubes and baked in the oven with a little Parmesan. It's nice with Italian style stews.

It's too late now I know but this recipe is amazing

You can dice the blocks of readymade up and use just as easily.

YABU to buy polenta without first having an idea of what to do with it.

(I live with a buyer of food that will never get eaten)

BitterAndOnlySlightlyTwisted · 02/09/2014 21:05

The peasant-food fad went too bloody far when perfectly sensible people thought polenta was worth eating. It's mush with less taste than a mashed potato. I doubt even these mythical peasants would eat it if they had a choice of tucking into something else.

Trills · 02/09/2014 21:13

I know what to do with polenta - throw it away.

NorahBone · 02/09/2014 21:19

Pasta isn't exactly brimming with flavour, but no one thinks any the worse of it. I like it fried with plenty of lemon juice. But then I like stodge.

H2OWoe · 02/09/2014 21:46

Reading the "bin" suggestions with horror! polenta is FAB! Use Nigella's Senza Bastone version but use low fat milk instead of water. Before putting it in the oven, plonk a blob of grated parmigiano in it. This is the usa style tweaks to make polenta fabulous. Stir and bake for an hour. It's sensational with any tomato based saucy thing. Cut it into diamonds and pour the saucy thing over the diamond polenta shapes. Seriously yum. Keeps for a week in the fridge - reheat in microwave or pan fry some diamonds in a bit of olive oil then chuck any tomatoey/meaty thing over.

Dismayed at dismissive attitudes to this. Or maybe I am just stuck in 1995.

you could try looking in the FOOD/RECIPES section, which oddly enough has more food questions and indeed recipes than AIBU.

I make mine with stock, fry it crispy and eat it with unreasonable quantities of condiments. Stretches out a full english when the hash browns run short.

mausmaus · 02/09/2014 22:16

compost bin
disgusting stuff
am sure it is lovely for some, but for me it has a weird aftertaste that makes me gag.

Selks · 02/09/2014 22:21

Meh. Life's too short to waste valuable minutes eating tasteless stodge like polenta.

Girlwhowearsglasses · 02/09/2014 23:26

Slice and griddle or slice and use as a base for a bake. Use any sauce you would for gnocchi or pasta- so creamy porcini mushrooms or Parmesan and tomato. Is yummy when crispy and with a great sauce. You might say pasta or gnocchi 'taste of nothing' but they have good texture and take on flavours...

grocklebox · 02/09/2014 23:48

"Meh. Life's too short to waste valuable minutes eating tasteless stodge like polenta."

And pasta, potatoes, bread, rice etc....its all tasteless stodge unless you cook it properly. Hmm

minkah · 02/09/2014 23:58

Polenta is great. It's like pasta or rice, or bread.. It's what you do with it that makes all the difference.

Who doesn't love lemon polenta cake?!

trufflehunterthebadger · 03/09/2014 00:31

Yum, polenta al Gorgonzola. one of my fave lazy dinners

YoungBritishPissArtist · 03/09/2014 00:38

Mix with some oil and sugar to make a body scrub Grin

Idontneedanotherhero · 03/09/2014 19:49

Just to update you all: have decided I'm firmly in the "bin it" camp....'twas unpleasant!

grocklebox · 03/09/2014 19:53

Idontneedanotherhero · 03/09/2014 19:55
