Every time he comes on radio 4 or I stumble across anything he's written I just end up angry.

Obviously he has his fans but to me he just sounds like a pompous arse who has swallowed a dictionary.

Grrrr

, I find him v annoying, although in the linked interview less so, maybe because he is talking off the cuff and therefore without his dictionary

This is hilarious Grin

There are a lot worse things to swallow than a dictionary.

CheeseToastie123 · 31/08/2014 19:54

Cock and Bull - the story he chose to read very graphic bits from to a group of schoolchildren. I was 14, some audience members were 12. No doubt he was being edgy. I thought he was being a twat. Never has he dissuaded me of this.

He's pretentious and an intellectual snob, I could get over that, but it's his negativity and deriding of other public figures I find hard to swallow. Bring back Lisa Jardine Radio 4.

BetterTogether75 · 31/08/2014 21:30

I like Will Self, he is interesting and funny. I also prefer J.B. Priestley to Orwell (he was very jealous of Priestley, a much more successful novelist and essayist at the time).

Suzannewithaplan · 31/08/2014 22:34

I find Lisa Jardine a bit annoying tbh, mostly I think it's her voice and her inflection

PhaedraIsMyName · 01/09/2014 00:52

Lisa Jardine is damned for all eternity as far as I'm concerned for picking À la recherche du temps perdu as her favourite book and saying "but of course only in the original French"

Bogeyface · 01/09/2014 00:58

Not read the thread but I find Will Self to be the most self aggrandising arrogant self satisfied arse that ever lived.

hth

wobblyweebles · 01/09/2014 01:38

Yanbu. I've often wondered if anyone has ever actually read one of his novels

I've read the Book of Dave

helpful?

PhaedraIsMyName · 01/09/2014 08:38

Great Apes. I didn't like it terribly much.

You can love WS for this alone:

"Does it turn into Tolstoy at page 205?"
