She took Iain's ice cream out of the freezer did she not?!

Yes, even UK Masterchef has blast freezers. There are always shots of contestants dashing back and forth from blast freezers with puddles of pannacotta and whatnot.

I don't think there's anything sinister about GBBO not having them, though. They probably just didn't think about the need for extra freezer space on that particular day. I doubt if their budget extends to swapping refrigeration equipment in and out from one day to the next.

figgypuddings · 28/08/2014 12:27

I now want a blast freezer.Envy

BeCool · 28/08/2014 12:28

blast!

dexter73 · 28/08/2014 12:31

Diane has her say - here

SlowlorisIncognito · 28/08/2014 12:33

According to Martha's twitter, it sounds like the whole day was chaotic, which tbh was probably engineered by the producers looking for drama.

In previous years, things have been said about the time available not really being enough for the bakes, and things like that. I know they are time limited with filming etc, but I do think the producers should try to allow contestants to show their best work, rather than setting people up to fail.

I agree, the way it was edited set Diana up- there's no way you can get a true representation of the events of a whole day in around 20-25 minutes, so the things you see on TV have always been carefully edited.

Beeyump · 28/08/2014 12:34

Poor Diana. Poor Iain Sad

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 28/08/2014 12:34

Oh I am sure that the producers knew that icecream was going to be very difficult with domestic freezers in a sweltering tent, Quenelle. It doesn't take a genius.

I think they did think about it, and decided to go with the inadequate freezers, because it would make for more stress and drama.

lettysmith21 · 28/08/2014 12:36

what an utter cow! felt sorry for the poor fella x

It doesn't take a genius, but it does take more production budget and someone who gives a shit. I think they just didn't plan very well for a day's filming involving ice cream.

I love the caption under the Indy's photo.

Egghead68 · 28/08/2014 12:41

I feel sorry for Iain but please don't villify Diana.

theskewbald · 28/08/2014 12:46

Naughty editing. If he'd not lost his rag and just presented what he had, he'd still be there.
Looks like what actually happened was Diana took his icecream out of her freezer, he turned round and went who did that (in 40 seconds. 40 exactly, Sue was timing it) and she said me, and there was no real freezer drama at all.
Then Iain through a tantrum and binned his pud, and the editing team thought it would be funny to edit it that way so that people would rant and rave about it for days. And it worked!
I was just peed off Martha did not get Baker of the Week.

Why was Sue timing how long Iain's icecream was out of the freezer before he noticed and not telling him his ice cream was out? Shoddy behaviour on her behalf.
There seems to be alot of making up what "really" happened on this thread re whether or not Iain knew it was out. Surely if he knew it was removed he'd be straight over there not faffing around for 40 seconds.
It doesn't reflect well on anyone.

Fontella · 28/08/2014 12:59

I said to the daughter - if this hadn't been pre-recorded, I would be one of the 'thousands who complained' on the phone to the Beeb to 'reinstate Ian' immediately. I was fuming .. and I think one of the reasons so many of us were fuming was the way it was filmed and edited and the total lack of reaction or acknowledgement as to what had happened from Mary, Paul, Mel and Sue? It was just weird how it wasn't even referred to?!

All the blame was laid squarely at Ian's door - he shouldn't have lost his rag, he shouldn't have chucked it in the bin, he shouldn't have stormed off. Well no maybe he shouldn't .. .

but she shouldn't have taken his fecking ice cream out of the freezer in the first place!

.... not to mention leaving it in a boiling hot tent, not telling him, not giving him a chance to move it, and not taking any share of the responsibility for any of it. Just leaving it there ffs!

Would his ice cream have frozen properly if she hadn't taken it out? Maybe not, but it would have been a fecking sight more frozen than it was - that's a given. Did he put it in the 'wrong' freezer, was it out for 40 seconds only? Who knows - but that's not the point really is it?

if she wanted it moved she should have called him to move it! Taking it out and just shoving it on the side, is bang out of order which ever way you look at it, and something should have been said, acknowledged, explained, and Ian cut some slack, rather than completely ignoring what had happened and focusing on his reaction, rather than what led up to it.

I shall now climb down off me soap box!

MajesticWhine · 28/08/2014 13:02

I call for Mary Berry to visit Mumsnet and give us some answers...

BeCool · 28/08/2014 13:03

Fontella if we are going back to "the first place" Iain should have put his ice cream in his own designated freezer and "not been messing around with their freezer (and therefore their ice cream) in the first place".

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 28/08/2014 13:04

Maybe he thought that he could blame it on sabotage and then chucked his icecream because he knew it was shit and wasnt going to set. Hoping that we would all blame her.

I suspect (going by what's been said by people who were actually there) that there's been some seriously dodgy editing going on and I think it's sad that Diana is being vilified in such a way when no one really knows the truth.

GimmeMySquash · 28/08/2014 13:04

I wish they had left it on BBC2, it was all warm and fluffy over there.

ghostisonthecanvas · 28/08/2014 13:05

Do you think that there was no reaction from Mary et al because nothing actually happened? It wasn't on anyones radar. Simply edited into an incident.

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 28/08/2014 13:07

ghost I think exactly that.

GimmeMySquash · 28/08/2014 13:08

So would you have called sabotage on Ian, for keeping others ice cream left out in a hot tent? The Man didn't use his one freezer, was Dianne supposed to leave her own icecream to melt?

2rebecca · 28/08/2014 13:14

Something did happen though. Someone removed someone else's ice cream pudding out of a freezer into a hot tent in a cooking competition.
If the women knew it was in the wrong freezer they should have said so loudly earlier as soon as someone realised and loudly said it was being removed. It sounds as though someone had known it was there for a while.

PamBagnallsGotACollage · 28/08/2014 13:20

But it was only out for less than a minute. It just wasn't very good ice cream!
