To think that there's really no need for all the flirting/romance/sexual tension in Doctor Who

I thought we might have a respite from it with Capaldi's arrival, but it now seems his companion must have a younger man to flirt/cheekily banter with.

It's supposed to be about monsters for god's sake, not soapy flirtation.!!

OP posts:
Cafevelo · 26/08/2014 19:35

I think you are overthinking doctor who

NotTheKitchenAgainPlease · 26/08/2014 19:38

I agree OP. Totally unnecessary and distracting! The Doctor wouldn't be interested in any of his companions.

Idontseeanysontarans · 26/08/2014 19:40

YANBU I was hoping that it would all stop when PC was quoted as being firmly against any romance but no, they're giving her a boyfriend...
Bit tedious really.

mummymeister · 26/08/2014 19:42

watched the first episode with the kids and thought that this was one regeneration too many. should have stopped on a high when David Tennant left. all the monsters have been in it before, no new ideas and bloody darleks already??/ what are the writers thinking of.

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 26/08/2014 19:48

The inter-species gay marriage is also quite confusing for my nephew. Not the gay bit, he's got friends with two mums/dads. It's the difference in body temperature.

hackmum · 26/08/2014 19:53

Am I the only one who finds the inter-species marriage quite creepy? Hey, not the gay bit, obv - am totally fine with that Smile but I thought every culture had prohibitions against inter-species sex.

DoJo · 26/08/2014 19:55

But there is flirting/romance/sexual tension everywhere in the world - we can only suspend disbelief so much, and I barely manage it for the rest of the antic they get up to...

DoJo · 26/08/2014 19:55

*antics

ArgyMargy · 26/08/2014 19:56

YA def NBU - it's pathetic.

hackmum · 26/08/2014 20:07

I think the biggest mistake they made with the reboot of Doctor Who in 2005 was to have a full storyline in every episode. (The old Doctor Whos used to run a story over six episodes.) It's pretty clear that if you do that you'll quickly run out of stories - how many variations can you have on aliens attacking earth, and the doctor saving the day? The first two or three series worked pretty well but after a while the only option they had was to make the plots increasingly complicated, and by the time Steven Moffat took over the whole thing was well nigh incomprehensible.

steff13 · 26/08/2014 20:07

I agree with you, OP. As much as I liked Amy and Rory, my favorite companion was Donna. Precisely for the reason that there was no romantic feelings between her and the Doctor. They just a fun, friendly sort of relationship.

I'm very much "like that," though. If I'm watching a show such as a police procedurial or detective show, I am not interested in the characters' personal lives. The same goes for Doctor Who.

tobiasfunke · 26/08/2014 20:13

I don't know what Dr Who is meant to be. I hated all the lovey dovey stuff. That episode on Saturday that everyone raved about I thought was more than a bit shit. First 40 mins was a snooze fest that was only any interest in avid Dr Who fans- my 6 year old DS and 8 year old DN were bored rigid until the action started. Then it sort of got good but went all gooey in the end. The bit about being Scottish gave me the boak. The best bit about Dr Who used to be the cliff hangers. They need to bring them back.
I was disappointed. I like Peter Capaldi.

I have started showing DS the ones with Christopher Ecclestone- he likes them better- more straightforward and less up it's own Whovian arse.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 26/08/2014 20:14

True, I find it so upsetting - I reckon they should just get it out of their systems in one final fling, perhaps with a naked Capaldi?

Just me?

I'll get me coat. Grin

Ok, to be serious, I did find the flirting with Matt Smith/Tenant annoying, because it seemed very much to be 'OMG, we have a male character and a female character, they must flirt!'. But I liked the vibe between Capaldi and Coleman much more. I didn't think it was flirting. I like to think that his line about it being his mistake to think he was her boyfriend, was almost an apology from the writers to us in the audience?

I admit I am one of those people who enjoy personal relationships, though. I wouldn't want to see a Doctor who was more than flirting, because I think it spoils it, but I'm fine with the flirting so long as it's not the tired old cliche of women falling for him.

AskBasil · 26/08/2014 20:16

God you are so NBU.

It is tiresome

Just bring on the fucking daleks.

VashtaNerada · 26/08/2014 20:17

Hang on - quite a significant part of the episode was devoted to signalling the end of the flirtation era. It was very explicit on that point!

AskBasil · 26/08/2014 20:19

Hope you're right.

I loathed Amy. She was the worst. And Matt Smith.

And Billie Piper and the second heart. Bleurgh

Whiskwarrior · 26/08/2014 20:20

If they removed all the flirting DD would die! She's 12 and it makes her all wibbly Grin.

I can't get over how many threads we've had recently citing hate for various characters/storylines etc. Jesus Christ it's a tv show, aimed at families, it's not Question Time!

People are taking it way too seriously and need to stop investing so much in it!

Bowlersarm · 26/08/2014 20:21

That's the best bit.

YABVVVU.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 26/08/2014 20:22

But they could write flirting for someone other than the doctor, right?

I would love to see them write a good storyline for the doctor's companion and someone else. I really enjoyed tiny moments of Amy and Rory, but because they lost their nerve and kept implying she was lusting after Matt Smith (and honestly, who lusts after Matt Smith?!) it didn't work.

I am a die-hard romantic and enjoy flirty storylines, it's just it gets a bit boring when it's all the same plot.

Or, I would be totally happy to see them write more Doctor/River Song. Just so long as she's River Song as she was in the early bits, because she rocked.

MissMole · 26/08/2014 20:23

I so agree!
Romance-No!
Angst- feck off!

Get on with an adventure fgs.

Whiskwarrior · 26/08/2014 20:24

I would love more River Song! As a female companion she really did rock.

And fwiw I totally lust after Matt Smith but realise that, on MN at least, I'm in the minority...

steff13 · 26/08/2014 20:25

AskBasil, I'm afraid you're quite wrong about Amy. :) However, I am with you on Billie Piper. I hate, loathe, and detest Rose. She as the worst. The worst!

ArsenicyOldFace · 26/08/2014 20:26

The inter-species gay marriage is also quite confusing for my nephew. Not the gay bit, he's got friends with two mums/dads. It's the difference in body temperature.

I missed the whole Matt Smith tenure and saw Saturday's episode, so might not have all the facts re. the intergalactic leasbian married couple.

BUT I was worried that it was set in Victorian London and they were married and that was fine, apparently.

I was glad I didn't currently have a seven year old who I was trying to dripfeed the history of the struggle for equality to.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 26/08/2014 20:27

Sorry, whisk! Grin He's just not my type. Now, Eccleston ... mmm ...

I'm afraid I also wouldn't kick Billie Piper out of bed, so that puts me in even more of a minority than you. Blush

Whiskwarrior · 26/08/2014 20:28

Each to their own LRD - now we won't have to fight it out.

I'll have the chin and you get the ears and the massive mouth Grin
