If you put Michael Ball into a musical it will be utterly amazing

If you put Ruthie Henshall into a musical she'll kill it dead

Michael Ball is amazing. Ruthie is ok, but I'm not a huge fan.

I think there are some other amazing musical theatre stars that aren't as well known and are much better. But then I was never really a fan of Elaine Paige either, much to my father's obvious distress! At the moment I am extremely impressed by Madalena Alberto (currently playing Eva Peron), but was left wanting by MARTI Pellows performance as Che. I guess you can't please everyone all of the time!

Picturesinthefirelight · 28/09/2014 20:07

I was extremely impressed by Nikki Davis-Jones, both in Rent & Wicked

And Oliver Thornton in Priscilla was wonderful.

I do like Michael Ball though.

YonicScrewdriver · 28/09/2014 20:09

It's possible Equity already had a Ruth Henshall.

I like her Roxie.

I'm not a fan of Ruthie Henshall either. I didn't realise she was in Billy Elliot, if I'd known I wouldn't have gone to the cinema to see it today. For me she's always more look at me I'm Ruthie Henshall than playing a part. She was ok in Chicago but Ute Lemper was amazing.

I loved the new version of Miss Saigon, apart from the new song, but the rest of the new lyrics really bring it to life. Book of Mormon is just amazing, there's some really great performers in it and the songs are so singable.

Picturesinthefirelight · 28/09/2014 20:34

Come on southwest - it was amazing today!!!!

Worth it just for Liam Mower - & Elliot Hanna is one of the best Billy's I've seen.

bruffin · 03/10/2014 19:27

I loved her performance in Billy Elliot on Sunday, I didnt realise it was her until about half way through and so certainly dont understand the "look at me Im ruthie henshall " criticism.
I dont remember any of the songs but the performances were excellent and Elliot Hana was amazing.

I love Michael Ball

Never seen RH live, but she was good on Last Night of the Proms doing the Mary Poppins medley.

My favourite musical performer currently is Alex Gaumond. I saw him in We Will Rock You and Legally Blonde, and he was amazing!

Rusticated · 03/10/2014 21:23

I've never seen RH in anything but a couple of Proms, and wasn't wildly impressed (but it's probably weird to have to sing musicals in a Proms setting, so prob unfair to judge her as rather brittle and not in great voice on that basis) and I always thought Michael Ball was a yawny, dimply blandfest but he was a more than adequate Sweeney Todd once I stopped hearing 'Love, love changes everything!' in my head, though overshadowed by Imelda Staunton.

I'm an opera fiend, but love some corny old musicals, and adore Sondheim. The amplification does come as a but of a shock if you're used to opera where unmixed voices sing over a full orchestra, to be fair. Not so long ago, you could argue that the great opera voices just stood there and sang, whereas musical performers had to act and dance impossibly well while singing, but now opera singers often have to be just as versatile while making themselves heard in the back row of the a ROH.

I saw Wicked a couple of years ago, and thought the belting was godawful, though. It also only has two good songs...

Rusticated · 03/10/2014 21:26

Oh, cross-posted. It was the MP medley I heard RH in, and I didn't rate it at all. I thought she seemed unsure of herself, and neither entirely in or out of character. It's not much of a fit for her, though - I can imagine she'd be better in Chicago. It was slightly weird casting for a MP. Dudley, I thought, though I can't think who would have been better...?

Rusticated · 03/10/2014 21:27

Unmiked voices, not unmixed. Duh.

I'm a bit meh about RH.
Elaine Paige's voice and laugh grate on me so much.

Idina Menzel is the Queen of Broadway imo.

NoisyOyster · 10/10/2014 09:09

I'm off to see the new Miss Saugon today. Cannot wait Grin

Saw the old version five times, (twice abroad) Blush so very interested to see how the "new Ellen" is portrayed

Got my tissues!
