If you put Michael Ball into a musical it will be utterly amazing

If you put Ruthie Henshall into a musical she'll kill it dead

But, and bear in mind I had to look her up, you make her sound totally amateurish and Z list wannabe.

I thought from your description that's what she was!

Maybe, given your Miss Saigon comment too, you just have exceptionally high expectations Smile

ArsenicyOldFace · 24/08/2014 12:53

It IS my age Sad

I thought she was famous in the 90s Nomama and even then it was partly for her love life

Icimoi · 24/08/2014 12:56

When I saw Ruthie Henshall as Roxie Hart she was superb. Whoever paid Velma Kelly was unmemorable, and if anything RH was having to push her forward in order to keep the right balance between the two characters.

MrsDavidBowie · 24/08/2014 13:07

Just like to remind you Elaine Paige and her laugh are on R2 Grin

I don't understand musicals. Apart from Cabaret and A Chorus Line where it makes sense randomly bursting into song is weird. I can't suspend disbelief and it all sounds the same.

I enjoy opera, especially Mozart and Handel but I suppose the difference is it's so stylised and there is little if any talking (and it doesn't all sound the same)

PhaedraIsMyName · 24/08/2014 13:16

I've never heard of Ruthie Henshall

bruffin · 24/08/2014 13:31

Ive seen her a few times and I loved her performances going back to She Loves You. She lights up the stage for me.

BackforGood · 24/08/2014 13:35

Like Methe - I love musicals, but I go to see the show, not a 'celebrity'. I have no idea who is going to be in the shows I book for, and, tbh, as I'm too tight to shell out £££ for a programme, I rarely have any idea after I've seen them Wink. If the musical is good enough, and the actor can sing, then it matters not who is in them.

SorrelForbes · 24/08/2014 13:38

I adore Ruthie. She played Rosie and Velma over here and played Rosie in Broadway so is definitely a quality performer. She was great in Crazy for You too and more recently in Margeurite.

MoreCrackThanHarlem · 24/08/2014 13:40

Going to see Billy Elliott in October (shocked at the £££ of the tickets btw) and have heard good reports.
Saw MB in Hairspray, he was fabulous.

OnlyLovers · 24/08/2014 13:44

Don't know Ruthie H at all but her name is annoying and babyish. [irrational]

Don't generally like Michael Ball and his podgy face and his luvviness, but I must say he was fucking great in Sweeney Todd and his voice was cast-iron.

Imelda Staunton was even better though.

The fact that these sentences come from the same person make me suspect that there's the eeeeeniest teeeeeensiest little bit of musical snobbery going on! Still, each to his/her own!

MrsBowie....enjoy! You sound like me and comedy gigs!

Can I sit with you Phaedra? Grin I'm going to loiter in the hope of finally understanding what the attraction is.

17leftfeet · 24/08/2014 13:58

I'm not a fan of hers

She overacts with her mouth which is distracting and hits all the right notes but there is no feeling in anything she sings

But that is just my opinion and the great thing about music is that we all have different opinions

StoneFoxMama · 24/08/2014 14:11

I first saw her in Crazy For You as a small girl, she was really inspiring and I went on to become a performer in musicals. I loved her 'Roxie' so much and nicked loads of her performance for auditions, she's one of my favourites and has had a great career. As for her name, it's neither here nor there and has no bearing on her skills as a performer really. People are called far worse names.

ArsenicyOldFace · 24/08/2014 14:13

You don't say?

Chill. Only said herself it was an irrational dislike.

StoneFoxMama · 24/08/2014 14:18

I'm perfectly chilled thanks Grin maybe tone hasn't been conveyed and I sounded more serious than I was, I just found it funny that a few people were having a go at the poor sod for her name!

YouTheCat · 24/08/2014 14:18

She's been around in musicals for decades. Her 'Roxie' was brilliant.

Michael Ball is all right. Nothing special.

Paloma12 · 24/08/2014 14:18

Passion was amazing! Best musical ever. Michael Ball is King of the West End.

HermioneWeasley · 24/08/2014 14:26

Agree, I can't bear her.

Michael Ball is lovely.

ArsenicyOldFace · 24/08/2014 14:28

maybe tone hasn't been conveyed and I sounded more serious than I was,

Oh thank god for that Grin

StoneFoxMama · 24/08/2014 14:36

Michael Ball is very good at what he does, seems lovely and does have a nice twinkle in his eye but I find Ruthie Henshall a bit more exciting on stage. It's just an energy thing I guess, we aren't all enamoured by the same type of person (thank the Lord).

I saw her 20 years ago in Miss Saigon & she was amazing.

Saw her last month in Billy Elliot & she was shocking. No voice at all. She was better today at the live screening & great acting/stage presence but her voice sounded wrecked.
