To think dss shouldn't be playing his guitar?

DSS is 18. Just done A levels and has been given a guitar as a present.

Now I am all for this but he plays it constantly. The din is awful and it's the same song over and over. When he's playing I have to yell to talk to younger dd, can't watch tv , make phone calls or anything. I literally feel a prisoner in my own home!

Aibu? DSS thinks I certainly am!

Headphones?

Tikimon · 21/08/2014 17:52

You gave him a present and he's enjoying it? The horror!

This is why we don't give children noisy gifts. Wink

Tell him to play it his room with the door closed and volume down a bit.

pictish · 21/08/2014 17:53

For him I meant.

He'll never get any good if he doesn't practise.

taxi4ballet · 21/08/2014 17:54

Is it an electric guitar? If it is, there should be a socket on the amp so he can plug his headphones into that, and you won't have to listen to the din...

HeartShapedBox · 21/08/2014 17:54

who gave him the guitar?

if it was you, yabu to complain when he plays it! Grin

Yes, get him some headphones for the amp

LadyLuck10 · 21/08/2014 17:54

Can you ask him to play during certain times or maybe about two hours a day? Some sort of compromise, he's old enough to get that.

alemci · 21/08/2014 17:55

my ds plays constantly so I sympathise but got used to it. he has improved

loudloudmusic · 21/08/2014 17:55

He won't use them.

I didn't give him the gift either! It isn't that he isn't good at it either, he actually isn't bad as I've told him over and over but can any of you honestly say you wouldn't be a bit frazzled after 6 solid hours of the same chorus of the same (loud!) song!

I'm seeing the funny side a bit more now though Grin

Dd has asked if she can have an electric guitar and be as good as dss - NO way! Grin

Strict rules about practising instruments here- not in the living room without asking and getting permission from everyone and stop when asked. Otherwise, bedroom. And if it can be turned down, then turn it down. And for an electric guitar, headphones if it's annoying to anyone,

"He won't use them."

Oh, yes he will!

ArabellaTarantella · 21/08/2014 18:01

He either wears headphones or he gets rid of the guitar. Straight choice. Simple really.

loudloudmusic · 21/08/2014 18:03

Oh I wish it was but he can be difficult.

SquinkiesRule · 21/08/2014 18:04

I live in a house filled with electric guitars, it's headphones or no amp, there is no compromise here. I don't want to listen to the same song over and over while they practice.

MaidOfStars · 21/08/2014 18:07

Headphones or confiscation. His choice.

When he is in his own house, he can do as he pleases.

MrsTerryPratchett · 21/08/2014 18:07

Is it Stairway to Heaven? I think that is compulsory.

BarbarianMum · 21/08/2014 18:11

Dh and ds1 are drummers. Ds2 now wants to learn the trumpet. Count yourself lucky woman Grin

MaidOfStars · 21/08/2014 18:13

By 'own house', I mean 'one he owns'.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 21/08/2014 18:15

Guitars are quiet, surely? Eldest son is learning acoustic, husband has an electric but practises without the amp.

You need to get him Rocksmith, he can plug into that instead.

Younger son is learning drums. Give me the guitar any time.

FunkyBoldRibena · 21/08/2014 18:16

He won't use them.

If this was my house the fuse to his room would trip every time he tried to use them without headphone. Strange that.

plinth · 21/08/2014 18:21

Can he practice in the shed?

If it's electric he can still practice without plugging it in.

loudloudmusic · 21/08/2014 18:22

Guitars are quiet? Why have we not got one of these?!

Shuddering at the thought of trumpets and drums - which evil Mumsnetter brought that up?

He stopped eventually when dd started crying as it was hurting her heart. Dss thought this was a compliment to his skills. Hmmmmm ok then! Grin
