To refuse to do the ice bucket challenge

The ice bucket challenge is sweeping our way from the US - I know because one of my friends has been nominated on FB and a bit like the no make up selfie they then choose someone else to nominate once done.

If you don't do it you're meant to donate $100 or whatever UK equivalent is to charity - not sure which charity it is but I'm sure it's a very worthwhile one.

I must be turning into an old curmudgeon as I can't think of anything worse to do. I don't want to be soaked and I don't want to give a huge chunk of money to a charity that I haven't chosen. I already do quite a lot for charity, but I hate being voluntold to do anything and I hate the way that being asked to do things or donate money seems to be all pervasive now.

WIBU to post on FB that if anyone asks me to do the Ice Bucket challenge I will refuse and that as I already donate to charity, I will not be doing the donation either? That way it saves people the bother of nominating me Grin?

It may not be EVERYONE'S idea of fun, but it definitely IS fun for a lot of people. That is an indisputable fact.

OP Here - Gah, I have been nominated along with DS. I will do it as DS really wants to and it would spoil his fun if I didn't (plus he'd only nominate me anyway) and of course I will donate the money.

Baa baa (humbug or sheeplike I'm not sure)

Hmm, I've been nominated and feel a bit pissed of tbh.
I work for a charity as well as donating to charity. I am however, NOT going to participate as I object to being pressured to donate.

I was v annoyed when I got nominated however did it with my boys & actually thought it was fun Grin.

[Did also donate to MND!]

Oldraver · 28/08/2014 23:29

I've not been nominated (yet) but just intend to totally ignore it. No statements about wasting clean water etc just silence

superstarheartbreaker · 28/08/2014 23:34

I did it today and it was hilarious. The look on my dd and her best mates face as they tipped the bucket was priceless. And I'm normally a spoilsport!

After watching a TON of videos on FB where friends did it, I posted that I wasn't interested in doing it, so please don't nominate me. I give a lot to charities (and am currently funding my kids to make cakes for Zoe's Place with a target of raising £100) but don't want to be pushed into giving to charities I don't feel drawn towards. No one should. My 10 year old cried because I wouldn't let her do it when she was sick and has the 11 plus exam in a few days, even though she has no idea what the whole thing was about, she just didn't want to be left out.
They have raised enough money and awareness by now. Time to start giving again to charities that affect far more of the population than ALS does.

I'm not doing the challenge - nominated twice but there is no way. I am going to donate though, thanks to this thread I now know where my money should rightfully be going. Lots of people on my newsfeed have added a screen shot of their donation confirmation text to Macmillan, which is dreadful if, like me, that's what they believed it was for.

I think the donations should only be for MND, it's not like they have much funding and this was their idea. Perhaps people should split their donation between MND and their chosen charity if they feel strongly.

onedev · 29/08/2014 07:12

It started as a way to raise awareness for any charity & then a guy called Pete Frates challenged his old baseball colleagues to do it for ALS because he has it & it took off from there as that got other famous sportsmen doing it which in turn got celebrities. There are videos of others doing it before Pete's challenge for various charities.

True that none were for MacMillan as they're all US charities before that but I think the flack Macmillan are getting is unfair.

That said, I did nominate for MND as it has done a great job in raising awareness of that devastating disease which seemingly could affect anyone of us (although thankfully does only affect a small number of people).
