To refuse to do the ice bucket challenge

The ice bucket challenge is sweeping our way from the US - I know because one of my friends has been nominated on FB and a bit like the no make up selfie they then choose someone else to nominate once done.

If you don't do it you're meant to donate $100 or whatever UK equivalent is to charity - not sure which charity it is but I'm sure it's a very worthwhile one.

I must be turning into an old curmudgeon as I can't think of anything worse to do. I don't want to be soaked and I don't want to give a huge chunk of money to a charity that I haven't chosen. I already do quite a lot for charity, but I hate being voluntold to do anything and I hate the way that being asked to do things or donate money seems to be all pervasive now.

WIBU to post on FB that if anyone asks me to do the Ice Bucket challenge I will refuse and that as I already donate to charity, I will not be doing the donation either? That way it saves people the bother of nominating me Grin?

Actually I think this is pretty good, I didnt like the no-makeup one because it was more about individual vanity and "still beautiful babes!" etc etc rather than actually giving to charity.

This one however has another dimension, wait for it.....its FUN...it actually raises money for a brilliant and little known cause and it raises a smile at the same time - nowt wrong with that.

When the world seems to be going batshit around our ears at the moment with people cutting heads off, being chased up mountains, bombs bullets and ebola on the march. Actually, in the midst of all that, a couple of minutes spent laughing at people tipping ice over their heads for a good cause is a bit of light relief and reminds me it is still possible for the human race to do something good for a change.

If you dont want to do it dont, if you dont want to donate dont.

curiousgeorgie · 21/08/2014 13:02

You're wrong Nancy. They've donated loads. Charlie Sheen for example donated 10,000 dollars. I believe they've raised over 6 million as it stands off of this alone.

Just in response to your 'I bet they haven't.'

I read somewhere that having a bucket of icy water thrown over you is the closest feeling to ALS

I saw another version that said it's what having chemotherapy feels like.

differentnameforthis · 21/08/2014 13:20

No, it isn't to avoid paying money to charity. You do the challenge & also donate, at least that is what all the ones I ave seen have done.

Quenelle · 21/08/2014 13:38

Dave Grohl made his an homage to Carrie

PlacidApricots · 21/08/2014 15:06

It originated from a guy in a wheelchair with ALS and I think the most extreme thing he could do was throw a bucket of water over himself.

BucktoothedGirlinLuxembourg · 21/08/2014 15:13

DS1 did it last night and as far as I know has not donated a single penny to the charity. I doubt he even knows it was a craze intended to raise awareness/funds for research into a rare medical condition, it's just a "fun" thing that they (young folk) want in on. To be part of the cool gang (no pun intended).

Eauneau · 21/08/2014 15:19

Gah, someone on my Facebook put one up yesterday and he said 'don't forget to donate - in the UK it is Macmillan and in the US it is ALS? Or ASL? Or something, anyway.........'

So turns out it is all about me me me and not really raising awareness or money for ALS after all.

Bullshit.

Eauneau · 21/08/2014 15:37

And even though the ice bucket challenge has been labelled as 'slactivsm' I have noticed that there are far less people doing this than the no make up selfie - because rather than just taking a selfie after yu have washed your face before bed, for this you have to, you know, actually go and find some ice, fill a bucket and pour it over yourself so that you get all wet.

I mean, who can be arsed with all that?
Hmm

her stupid friends did it and they all got colds
You can't catch a cold from getting cold!

This has raised a huge amount of money for ALS and got people talking about a condition they know so little about. It's not a bad thing.
But no-one is obliged to do it. If you don't want to do it, don't do it.

The Upworthy video that a PP linked to, was incredibly moving.

nikki1978 · 21/08/2014 18:49

I think it is a big shame people are donating to macmillan. As worthy a charity as they are they got lots donated with the no makeup selfies. Mnd/als is a devastating horrific disease that is not widely known. It deserves to have its time in the spotlight. My uncle died of it and my friends husband has it so I am biased. I wish people would remember to mention what it is in aid of when they do the challenge so word is spread.

nikki1978 · 21/08/2014 18:51

How the hell is having water thrown over you like the feeling of als? What a ridiculous statement Angry

Capitola · 21/08/2014 18:56

People on my FB are posting videos of themselves doing it with no mention of ALS or donating or links. I am very irritated by this.

This blogger who has ALS, has an interesting view point.

MrsDavidBowie · 21/08/2014 19:00

Utter bollocks.

TheScottishPlay · 21/08/2014 19:02

It originated months ago to increase awareness of Adrenal Insufficiency (CAH, Addisons Disease etc) but it didn't catch on as AI isn't well known.

I know BeerTricks. Really thought provoking.

The rest of her blog is lovely too, full of beautiful photos and witty musings.

Nikki That was a comment I saw in a couple of places, I thought it was probably utter bollocks, but wanted to check. People make up the most ridiculous shit sometimes. Seems this was one of them.

FrankelandFilly · 21/08/2014 21:19

That video is very moving Nikki, it certainly made me cry.

FrankelandFilly · 22/08/2014 16:49
Grin
goldsilver · 26/08/2014 07:18

No one has actually mentioned that the organisation concerned experiments on animals! Plus there are rumours they don't organise their money properly...lining the wrong pockets. Wish people would look a bit further rather than conforming. Sheep mentality or what?! There are other charities; there is one in the UK supporting the same disease that does not test on animals.

UncleT · 26/08/2014 08:18

People can bleat on about it being 'fun' until the cows come home, stating it like it was some kind of indisputable fact. Doesn't make it so.
