As the title says. I am desperate to sleep. But also desperate not to teach her bad habits :( She has a crate and this is the source of the problem :(

Did you let your baby into your bed? Imagining how irresistible those puppy dog eyes might be...any chance of a photo?

Dontgotosleep · 13/08/2014 21:18

Aww 9 weeks old. How gorgeous. She's just a tiny baby and missing her dog mummy. You're her new mummy now and she needs all your reasurance and cuddles. I wouldn't be able to resist.
Yes O.P any chance of a photo. # Adore puppies. So cute. I could eat them!.

ADHDNoodles · 13/08/2014 21:22

What's with all this crate crap anyway.

Actually, some dogs really like their crates. Ours did.

It's their safe spot and their time out spot. So like when we had people over and our dog didn't want to socialize, he'd go to his crate where he knew no one would touch him or try to pet him. When he was comfortable he'd come out.

You like your bedroom don't you? A crate is like the dog's bedroom. Don't forget, dogs are animals, and at their roots they are den animals. :)

JustDontWantToSay · 13/08/2014 22:53

How do I add a photo??

When we had a puppy a book suggested having the crate in your room for a few nights, then move to landing for a few nights then the final move to whereever you want the puppy to sleep. It worked a treat for us. We have no problems, also make it fun for the puppy to go in the crate during in the day with treats etc.

Good luck

Aw!!!! She's adorable! She'd be on my pillow all night! please let her in bed with you, or probably more sensibly in a little bed next to yours.

NickiFury · 13/08/2014 23:29

I had our miniature schnauzer in a basket next to the bed with a big fluffy toy for him to cuddle up to, I would just put my hand down into his basket if he got upset so he knew I was there. Could you do that? She's beautiful Smile

Cocolepew · 13/08/2014 23:34

Aww shes beautiful.

Backtobedlam · 13/08/2014 23:37

Aww she is gorgeous! We picked our puppy up at 8 weeks as we were advised that it's better to make changes prior to 12 weeks as they are more adaptable and bond more with the new owner. Our pup has been in crate since day 1 but settled straight away. We had bedding from his old bed so smelt of mum and siblings, a few chew toys from old home and the radio on low. Could you get hold of some smelly bedding from the breeder? Id love to have ours in bed permanently but DH isn't keen!

Dontgotosleep · 13/08/2014 23:47

Aww she's gorgeous. I'm crying at how cute she is. I couldn't resist those puppy dog eyes.
On another not nice note. You hear of people hurting animals though, don't you. It knocks me sick. I'd throw the key away. You look at all that innocence and trust in their eyes and wonder. How could anyone possibly hurt them, but the sad fact is some people do

NoNoDontEatThatBloodyHellFFS · 13/08/2014 23:48

God she's gorgeous Grin

8 weeks is standard for a puppy to go home, and most reputable breeders follow that pattern. I know a few that hold on until 12 weeks, to allow for more socialisation within the litter, but I'm on the fence as to whether I agree with that tbh. I think with the right puppy classes etc., they won't miss much learning from their litter mates, and you lose 4 weeks of one to one taking the pup out and introducing it to the world. The window for socialisation is so tiny. But that's a different thread.

Maybe I'm just soft as shit, but I've always had little pups on the bed with me. The crying breaks my heart a little Blush As they get older (12-14 weeks onwards) I introduce their own bed, which they generally learn to love as I make it available in the day time, so it's 'their space'. Most will be happy after a week or so to sleep in their own bed and have that bed moved wherever you like. Being soft as I am, mine have always had the option to come and go from my bed to theirs, but I've never had a problem removing them from furniture or separating them into their own bed if needed. They're settled with their own space and know that what I say goes by that age I suppose Smile

I've grown up with dogs on the beds though. When I was little our labrador would go to sleep with me at 10ish, and then be moved onto his bed when my parents went to sleep at around 1am. I had an awful time settling into the rickety old building we lived in at the time, so he was a huge comfort to me, and was the only reason I eventually learnt to go to bed there Smile

My current dog died two weeks ago and I miss his weight on the bed like you wouldn't believe. It was like sleeping with an enormous dire wolf Smile

Thank you for sharing those lovely photos! Tearing up with how adorable your puppy is, he's teeny! Definitely cuddle up with that cutie, lots of pictures, and enjoy his baby days! Congratulations mummy!

[looking forward SO MUCH to a day when home life is sane enough to have a dog again!]

slithytove · 14/08/2014 01:48

Grin
ADHDNoodles · 14/08/2014 01:51

I'd cave. That puppy would be in bed with me. Grin

Alisvolatpropiis · 14/08/2014 01:58

op don't be ridiculous, obviously the puppy must sleep on your bed!

steff13 · 14/08/2014 05:16

How could you possibly sleep without cuddling that all night long?! She's adorable.

We have a 100 lb Labradoodle. She slept in her crate until I had our daughter (mine and my husband's daughter, not mine and the dog's). The baby and I slept in the family room during the week so my husband and sons wouldn't be disturbed by the baby waking, and it seemed mean to lock her in the crate when I was right there in the room with her, and often awake.

Once I went back to work and the baby went to her crib in her own room, the dog refused to stay quietly in her crate. The rest is history - she sleeps wherever she wants. She usually lays on our bed for a while at night, but ultimately gets up and sleeps on the floor at the foot of the bed.

BOFster · 14/08/2014 08:25

BED- no question! Grin

murphys · 14/08/2014 09:00

We got our pup at 6 weeks, and yes she slept with me each night when we first got her. The intention was to put her bed on the floor so that she was near me, but not actually on the bed. Of course that didn't happen... Grin. She slept with me about 2-3 weeks (dh was away then so it suited me too Wink. Then we put her bed in the kitchen at night with our other dog, and she has been absolutely fine since then. She didn't howl all night on the first kitchen night as we expected, she cried about 10 minutes and then cuddled up with her Lab brother and went to sleep for the whole night!

londonrach · 14/08/2014 09:23

What a cutie. The puppy would be in bed with me for cuddles.

HappydaysArehere · 14/08/2014 09:57

In your room but not in your bed. Nice cosy dog bed where you can hear her if she needs to go out etc. if she gets on the bed a very firm No and put back where you want her to sleep. She will soon get the idea. Good luck.

HellonHeels · 14/08/2014 10:37

That puppy would be on the bed with me!

Gorgeous little thing.

BeetlingAbout · 14/08/2014 10:59

We got our mini schnauzer at 8 weeks, he's now four months and sleeps through the night in his crate and takes his naps there too.

We had the crate in our bedroom for the first few weeks and gradually moved it out. We put a blanket with his mum and litters scent on, plus a cuddly toy. I have also since discovered DAP spray that you could use to try to calm pup.

We also made sure to put treats in the crate randomly for puppy to find, and he always gets a biscuit in there before bed time, and belly scratches when he wakes to reinforce the positive association.

hope you get some sleep soon!

Tryharder · 14/08/2014 11:24

I dislike dogs really but even I think leaving a 9 week old puppy to cry all night is cruel.

Rainicorn · 14/08/2014 11:36

Oh she is adorable like a little teddy. Therefor she should be in a bed Grin
