I am not impressed tbh.

Anyone else not impressed?

OP posts:
fluffyraggies · 12/08/2014 17:16

I wasn't particularly impressed. Everything is a bit cheaper - but wrong. Their meat didn't seem much cheaper at all. No big joints either.

ShatnersBassoon · 12/08/2014 17:18

YABU. It's remarkably cheaper than the big supermarkets. Very little choice, but I have no doubt about it being better value. That isn't to say I don't prefer shopping elsewhere...

KnackeredMuchly · 12/08/2014 17:24

I've not been in it for about 3 years but it was so crap I've never bothered. I think some of their naice food is cheaper than Tescos naice food. But it wasn't worth

  • having to shop in 2 places and the constant irritation I'd paid more than I would have at the other
  • falling in love with a product before it disappeared
  • the packing nightmare
Happyringo · 12/08/2014 17:25

In my experience most things are cheaper, and good quality. Not everything though...my weekly shop is about two thirds Aldi and 1 third Sainsburys!

gordyslovesheep · 12/08/2014 17:25

I like it - I spend less because it's not full of fripperies I don't need - it's great for basics and their award winning red for under £4 is ace

LumionaMoonsplash · 12/08/2014 17:27

Yep it's definitely shittier with all the Newbies comparing it to Waitrose, it'll be fab again once they've floated back.

wanttosinglikemarycoughlan · 12/08/2014 17:29

Agree OP. I think you spend less because you cannot buy half your shop
They have a lot of junk in store too
I've had poor fruit and veg from them with half being thrown away

LEMmingaround · 12/08/2014 17:30

I have just done my weekly shop. £63 for 3 people. Free range chicken. Alcohol (3 beers 1bottle wine). Treats. All good quality. I actually sat and did a like for like shop on tesco online and the same shop (buying only tesco value so tescos cheapest) was £94!! Aldis own brand far nicer than tesco value. Its a bit of a no brainer really. If you want bigger joints go to the butcher with the money you save. Our shopping is consistently £30 ish pound a week cheaper. It takes me half an hour to shop in aldi. 2 hours in huge tesco traipsing round ailses with every brand of coffee known to man. Fuck that. I luffs aldi I can shop without anxiety again.

LEMmingaround · 12/08/2014 17:32

Also I always have enough food for the week from aldi. I cook from scratch so dont care about ready meals etc. Free range chicken is £4.99.

redshifter · 12/08/2014 17:32

I think it is good value with quality stuff.

windchime · 12/08/2014 17:37

All the coupons Tesco send me, plus all their special offers, have kept me there. If you shop smartly, you don't have to spend hundreds.

Namechangearoonie123 · 12/08/2014 17:40

It's half the price. I don't really buy meat there though, loads of fish.

My shopping bills have halved since they opened in October - halved

I've not suddenly decided to shop frugally either, frankly I'm drinking much more Toro Loco, eating more cheese, and eating even more veg.

LEMmingaround · 12/08/2014 17:43

Windchime -trust me no-one shops more smartly than I do. I doubt they send you £30 a weeks worth of vouchers. Id rather have the money in my pocket to be honest. Ok so last year I had £100 of vouchers to spend at xmas. £30 a week is £1340 a year.

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 12/08/2014 17:45

Some stuff is ace - other stuff not so good. I did an Aldi/Lidl shop on Saturday and ended up topping up at Sainsburys - things like Total Greek Yoghurt, Quorn, tacos, bagged salad.

Still cost £30 less overall than normal, and included more meat than I would usually buy.

LEMmingaround · 12/08/2014 17:45

I hate tescos bloody bogoff offers effectively forcing you into buying two things because they have actually doubled the price in the first place. Im surprised people still fall for it tbh.

Morethanalittlebitconfused · 12/08/2014 17:46

Our local has been spruced up and now is on a par with all the other supermarkets for price. I used to be impressed.

Floralnomad · 12/08/2014 17:50

I don't care if its cheaper I just don't like shopping there - so I don't . Added to that its not 'like brands' ,according to my DH the digestive biscuits are undippable and the bran flakes are inedible.

OnIlkleyMoorBahTwat · 12/08/2014 17:52

YABU. I gave up with Tesco when I realised that things were still more expensive than Aldi even after using the vouchers they sent me, half of which they wouldn't accept anyway. 20 pence off when you buy any vegetables only to find that in tesco land, lettuces aren't vegetables.

I bet they don't have all this angst in Germany, where Aldi is just a standard supermarket.

LEMmingaround · 12/08/2014 17:59

Jury's out on the digestive as have bought those this week. The rich tea were not great though. However the dark chocolate butter biscuits are better than sex and 75p! I am going to get fat ter

Milmingebag · 12/08/2014 17:59

I only really shop between Aldi and Lidl. I make all our food from scratch and the savings have been enormous since I switched. I love their speciality aisles too and we have tried all sorts as a consequence.

I like the fact there aren't so many different brands of the same food and that you can just get in and get on with your shop without a faff.

There have been a couple of irritations when they haven't got very basic things like vanilla essence and cocoa stocked but all in all I am very happy and loathe it when I have to go into other stores nowadays.

The only thing that mings is the Coralie baked beans.

Milmingebag · 12/08/2014 18:03

Lem the digestives are good but better still are Lidl ginger nuts which are the exorbitant sum of 25p.

Milmingebag · 12/08/2014 18:05

I would say in answer to the OP that our shopping bill is down by about 40%.

BornFreeButinChains · 12/08/2014 19:15

I spend less because it's not full of fripperies I don't need

I find aldi and lidli both rammed with chocolates and biscuits etc

I find aldi better than lidl...

busyboysmum · 12/08/2014 19:20

I like the total lack of confusing choice. It makes shopping far simpler and my bills about 40% cheaper. Possibly because you don't get tempted to buy fripperies.

moggiek · 12/08/2014 19:23

Love Aldi AND Lidl! Couldn't go back to the big four, now ...
