It's much, much cheaper. There are only a couple of things that I have to get in tesco now.

AnnaLegovah · 12/08/2014 19:27

When I go food shopping I want to be able to get everything I need from one place and you just can't do that at our local Aldi. I dont have the time or inclination to have to shop in multiple supermarkets .

But our local Aldi is very small and a bit grim plus I have to drive there. I can walk to Tesco.

Sallystyle · 12/08/2014 19:28

I did a shop yesterday. For 7 people I spent £80, that includes ingredients for the main meals. I will still need to buy bread, milk and a few other essentials during the week but I think £80 for a weeks worth of food for main meals is pretty good. I have done a full shop for just over £120, which includes toilet roll, cleaning products, milk and bread.

On average I save about £ 60 a week.

Sallystyle · 12/08/2014 19:29

I have found pretty much everything I need at aldi. It's rare that I have to go somewhere else.

My biggest savings are usually from caeral and cheese.

Fairylea · 12/08/2014 19:32

I've tried aldi loads of times but I always end up going back to tesco as I just don't like the taste of some of their things. As much as I try not to be a food snob I genuinely prefer the taste of lots of branded products. I do like aldi meat, well some of it. And I love the nappies and wipes.

I find I just do about 3 shops actually and get the best from each one. Tesco is still my favourite one though. Aldi is probably cheapest but not nicest for us.

IrianofWay · 12/08/2014 19:32

It's cheaper on most things. Some if those things aren't as good so I don't buy em. I get those from lidl Wink lovely cheese, fruit and veg and meat is ok. Agree re big joints but supermarkets don't tend to do properly big ones anyway. Tinned stuff ok.

I do my weeks shop in about 30 mins during my lunch hour because its a simple process as there is little choice. The staff are amazing - constantly juggling tasks and still managing to be friendly.

Could do without the packing frenzy but ican live with it.

Sometimes top up in the posh shops but it tends to give me a cats bum mouth at the prices and make tutting noises that upset the Ladies who Shop.

CornChips · 12/08/2014 19:32

I am a huge huge fan of Aldi. DH is the usual shopper in our household, until 18 months ago when he got a job mostly away.He kept telling me to go to Aldi, and I resisted. i before used to shop at Co-op and did a like for like, and it is 30% cheaper at Aldi. The only meats and fish I buy there are their sausages (really meaty, very good quality) and their fresh and smoked salmon. Otherwise I save enough to buy organic from our local butcher.

I like that there is not alot of choice, no 15 varieties of baked beans. I love the quality of their veg and fruit - nectarines this year have been amazing and I had given up on stone fruit for several years now. Avocados also usually exceptional.

I now do nearly everything at Aldi. I shop at Waitrose for their posh cordials and quails eggs.

We are in a small-ish town, and the checkout staff at our local Co-op also shop at Aldi-..... given I assume they are getting a staff discount that tells me something too.

CornChips · 12/08/2014 19:37

The other thing is too, we save so much now by shopping at Aldi that I feel quite able to buy treats I would never before buy- organic milk. Organic meat.

I can evangelise though.:) TBH, I think we have been ripped off by the big supermarkets for so many years, that it is a total eye opener.

Theas18 · 12/08/2014 19:37

I agree aldi is rubbish, you should NEVER shop there ....

Leave it all for me!

grocklebox · 12/08/2014 19:41

compared to what? you have very cheap food in the uk, you just dont realise it.

JaceLancs · 12/08/2014 19:47

I find Aldi and Lidl better than both Asda and Tesco, I find Asda very poor for choice in fact
However I do most of my shopping in morrisons, great choice and some things cheaper than Aldi/Lidl
I buy fruit and veg from local farmers market lasts longer and is cheaper, I also buy occasional specialist foods at either waitrose or Booths (a local independent chain which does fab meat and fish)

Peacocklady · 12/08/2014 19:53

Tesco value ginger nuts are also 25p.
A lot of the value stuff is just as cheap or cheaper from tesco.

honeybeeridiculous · 12/08/2014 20:31

I prefer Lidl, probably because it's close to home and bigger than my local Aldi
Love the cheese, like cathedral city but half the price,
Meat is good quality and much cheaper
Fruit and veg is nice, like someone else said, the nectarines have been lovely, and also the cherries, so much cheaper
A Hovis loaf is 79p
Coffee is good, not tried the t-bags
Cereals like muesli type thing are lovely, and half the price
Washing powder and softener much cheaper and good quality. I wash a lot of cricket whites so need good results!
Their liquid soap/shower gel (cein?) is so cheap but good quality,
I could go on and on!
It's not to everyone's taste and Iv only been shopping there since May but my weekly bills are much cheaper so I'm happy.
Have got 5 mouths to feed and nobody has said they don't like anything, infact I've just remembered, DD said the sausage rolls were the best ever!

dolphinsandwhales · 12/08/2014 20:39

Yanbu, I find it crap, but some people love it. I find sainsbury cheaper, but I don't eat meat so my shopping is pretty cheap..

Takesalongtime · 12/08/2014 20:41

New aldi opened near us- 1st shop 2day & saved £30ish. So to wait and see how it all tastes.....aldi pimms- yum!!!!

SpottyTits · 12/08/2014 20:47

YANBU we buy far too much crap in Aldi and the fruit and veg is practically rotten when you buy it. I spend £50 a week max in Tesco to feed 4 one in Nappies and that's by using every opportunity. I review for Tesco orchard, I'm a club card member so use my constant £4 off a £30 spend and using the sun vouchers to stock up on half price meat which for all who don't know yet is running again on Thursday.

doingitlikeaboss · 12/08/2014 20:52

YANBU!!

I tried aldi a couple of week's ago to see what all they hype on here was about.

I was sorely disappointed, the shops is horrible inside with a mish mashed lay out, the check out was horrible with my food being rammed through at lightning spead, little choice of any decent fruit and vegetables, fresh produce.

We went with it and made do with the crap selection that they had to offer and bought a shop for our family of 5, came to £67, cheaper than my weekly asda shop by a good bit but the quality was poor and shocking, we all hated the food including the dcs. Tasteless and cheap crap, the amount the we ended up binning was shocking and we ended up eating out most of the week

I wouldn't feed my kids here again, infact I wouldn't feed a dog the food.

I admit we are a family of brand snobs, and asda can provide these options (as can tesco, sainsburys etc but asda is local) and we always buy fresh meat from butcher, I would rather pay more for excellent quality and taste than make do to save a little bit of money.

Tweasels · 12/08/2014 20:54

I've had loads of problems with their meat. On several occasions, both chicken and minced beef have been off well before their use by date. I now freeze everything as soon as I get it home just in case.

It is only cheaper as there is so little choice. If you bought supermarket own brand in any other supermarket it would cost very similar I would imagine. It's just chances are when you go to a bigger supermarket, you get lured in by fancy brands and "finest" options.

TheRealAmandaClarke · 12/08/2014 21:00

Yabu.

FamiliesShareGerms · 12/08/2014 21:02

I prefer the simple pricing of "this is how much it is", with occasional reductions. Rather than "buy this larger jar for 50p less than the smaller jar because we've got a promotion on" or "buy three pay for the one closest to your mother's date of birth" offers

WyrdByrd · 12/08/2014 21:07

I'm no expert on Aldi - ours is just that bit too far away to make it worth the drive, but I have been converted to Lidl.

I did more or less a fortnight's shopping there recently for 3, notwithstanding top ups of fruit, veg, milk & bread.

Included chicken, steak, salmon, stilton, cider, pizzas, quiches & loads more - came in at £55.

I struggle to do a week's shopping elsewhere for that, although can't complain about our local Asda if I need more choice.

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 12/08/2014 21:11

My only problem with Aldi recently has been not being able to get a space on the carpark!

Yes, everybody, it's shit - please stop shopping there immediately so I can park and not have to queue at the checkout Grin.

Seriously though, I love it.

expatinscotland · 12/08/2014 21:13

I prefer Lidl.

dementedma · 12/08/2014 21:17

Aldi miles cheaper. We have saved a fortune.
Fruit and veg can be manky but the rest is fab!
