To expect a lock on my bedroom door

I'm staying in a very nice 4 star B&B tonight. It's lovely but there's no lock on my bedroom door. I'm travelling alone and am really quite surprised there isn't one.

The place is full so moving isn't an option but then I don't know that any other room has one.

Apart from the fact I'm sleeping in a house with 8 other strangers I have all the usual type stuff with me. Mobile phone ipad kindle. Not to mention my purse with credit cards etc and keys for a 4 month old car. I've put everything in the wardrobe but I'm still very uneasy.

is it unreasonable to think a lock is basic requirement in any b&b or hotel.

There should be a lock. Can you put a chair under the door?

smallblackcat · 10/08/2014 23:08

Yanbu. Wedge a chair under the door handle.

littleducks · 10/08/2014 23:08

Is there a door stop? Or could you borrow one from a downstairs door. If you wedge it under a shut door it won't open

AnyFucker · 10/08/2014 23:08

Have you spoken to reception staff ? I assume there was someone on duty in a 4* B+B when you checked into your room ?

Redglitter · 10/08/2014 23:10

Good idea. There's no small chair but there are 2 massive armchairs I think I'll try dragging one of them across. I don't think I'll sleep otherwise

I'm glad I'm only here one night and moving on tomorrow

It's just the woman who runs it. No staff. I got here quite late and by the time it occurred to me the entire place is in darkness so I assume she went straight to bed

YANBU. I would be seriously uncomfortable.

HumblePieMonster · 10/08/2014 23:16

This is quite wrong but I've come across it myself in b+bs. Chair at the door and loaded with things that will make a big noise when they fall...

Redglitter · 10/08/2014 23:16

Armchair dragged the length of the room and barricading the door shut. My (firefighter) brother would be horrified if he saw my only exit from the room blocked but I reckon fires a lesser risk Smile

can't believe I didn't think of the chair least I should sleep now.

I will be mentioning the lack of lock in the morning. Smile

Very strange. I bet she has a lock on her door. I would be tempted to go knock on it. Failing that, make sure you make a fuss about it in the morning.

Bin50 · 10/08/2014 23:24

I'd be putting something in front of the door too, but make sure it won't get in the way if there's an emergency.

Last year I spent a night alone at a B&B where my room was on the ground floor, away from the bulk of the other rooms that were upstairs and in the main building. Although there was a key there was a glass panel in the door to my room and I felt more than a little vulnerable. I didn't feel comfortable telling the staff I felt vulnerable. After texting a friend to tell them where I was staying I left my open suitcase in front of the door. The idea being that it wouldn't necessarily stop anyone opening the door but they'd hopefully make a hell of a noise if they did get in! With hindsight, if I found myself in a similar situation I would either say something or leave and drive home if necessary.

ShadowStar · 10/08/2014 23:27

YANBU, I would expect to be able to lock the door if I was staying in a B&B or hotel.

I'd also be feeling uneasy about this situation.

smallblackcat · 10/08/2014 23:27

How are you supposed to protect your belongings when you go to breakfast in the morning? Normally, you'd lock things in your room but you'll have to take them with you if there isn't a lock.

Scrumbled · 10/08/2014 23:29

I would expect a lock. Leave feedback with the owners.

RainbowB7 · 10/08/2014 23:30

Would be extremely uncomfortable with this.

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 10/08/2014 23:33

If you do a Trip Advisor review make sure to mention it on there. I wouldnt stay somewhere that didnt have a lock (I work in a Hotel too!) so id want to know about it prior to booking.

Redglitter · 10/08/2014 23:36

I'm checking out after breakfast so I think I'll take everything with me and put it all in the car.

They've got brilliant Trip Advisor feedback I can't believe not one person has mentioned the lack of lock. I most certainly will be though. Thank heavens I'm only here one night there's no way I could go out for the day and leave everything in here

That's insane - surely there has to be a lock?? How strange - I would not be happy at all.

Terrierterror · 10/08/2014 23:38

A folded newspaper/magazine will work as a door wedge.

sashh · 11/08/2014 06:20

In case of this happening in the future get yourself a chap rubber door stop and a door alarm.

londonrach · 11/08/2014 06:38

Expected a lock. I couldn't sleep properly as. Be worrying. Feedback to owners.....

BingoBonkers · 11/08/2014 07:04

Is there any sign of a lock ever being on the door? Thinking perhaps faulty and not got round to replacing. Certainly doesn't make it right. Hope you were able to sleep.

Joysmum · 11/08/2014 07:58

Whatever you do, don't do the British thing if being 2 faced by not saying anything because you don't like confrontation, but then complaining in a a review.

Dubjackeen · 11/08/2014 08:01

Do mention it, and see what they say. I would definitely expect there to be a lock on a bedroom door in a B&B, or hotel.

blanklook · 11/08/2014 08:14

I've stayed in a B+B with no locks before, I mentioned it to the owner who seemed horrified anyone would want or need a lock because she only let nice people stay there Shock It was in rural Scotland if it makes any difference.
