To think Quorn tastes nothing like the meat it claims to be

Okay so trying to be a bit healthier so I made Spag Bol tonight with quorn mince..

It literally tastes nothing like mince beef at all! I wasn't expecting it to be like for like, obviously but jeeesus it was rank. Unless of course it's just my cooking..

NoArmaniNoPunani · 10/08/2014 20:45

How did you cook it?

Namechangearoonie123 · 10/08/2014 20:45

It's nothing like it.

It very efficiently cleans out my bowels though, it's like colonic irrigation.

PlaydoughGirl · 10/08/2014 20:47

I haven't eaten it, but my DC's think the sausages taste the same as pork sausages.

WendyBloomers · 10/08/2014 20:48

I cooked it on the hob like it suggests on the packet..I had the sausages too the other day and they weren't quite as bad but still if someone blind fed me one the last thing I'd probably say it was was a sausage!

If I'm making something like spag bol I add marmite and gravy granules, gives it a meatier taste.

mmmuffins · 10/08/2014 20:52

Someone served me quorn chicken once and I thought it was real chicken. They had to show me the box Grin I hadn't eaten meat in many years though; you do forget what meat tastes like.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 10/08/2014 20:52

I don't think it claims to taste like beef does it? It's just quorn mince - mince made of quorn. I don't like it, I prefer the dried soya mince you get in Holland & Barrett. The quorn chunks are vaguely chicken-esque and we use those sometimes.

Scrumbled · 10/08/2014 20:52

Good, I eat it because it doesn't taste like meat Grin

LokiBear · 10/08/2014 20:54

I like it because it doesn't taste like meat too! Don't like the mince though. The texture is gross.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 10/08/2014 20:55

I bought some soya meat from H&B but it had a weird sweet flavour.
Quorn is a carrier for flavour, like tofu.

I like the Quorn Roast because it's quite salty, but doesn't resemble chicken.

Scrumbled · 10/08/2014 20:56

Yes, the mince can be a bit mushy.

RubyGoat · 10/08/2014 20:57

It tastes absolutely nothing like meat. Sorry. I was veggie for well over a decade & never really liked the stuff. Pulses & rice are, IMHO, a far more palatable protein source.

Joysmum · 10/08/2014 20:59

I batch cook and use half and half.

NoArmaniNoPunani · 10/08/2014 20:59

I always fry in butter with onion and garlic then add tinned tomatoes. I think it tastes just fine like that. It needs a lot less cooking time than meat too.

tabulahrasa · 10/08/2014 20:59

The mince doesn't taste of anything much, you have to add flavour yourself.

CornChips · 10/08/2014 21:06

I can't get on with quorn. If you want to make a healthier version, then use half and half beef mince and red lentils.

I first got the idea from a blogpost from a vegan MN blogger and my meat eating DH has never noticed that I do half and half.

morethanpotatoprints · 10/08/2014 21:07

Its not supposed to taste like beef, its supposed to taste like quorn.
Minced is what has been done to it.
The sausages aren't supposed to taste like pork neither.
It's not supposed to is it?
I always thought that quorn was its own taste not that it is supposed to resemble lots of different types of meat.

guitarosauras · 10/08/2014 21:09

Another who adds marmite.

I've been vegetarian for 23 years so don't remember what meat tastes like. To be quorn tastes of quorn.

The cauldron sausages are nice btw!

WendyBloomers · 10/08/2014 21:21

Half and half sounds a good idea, maybe I'll try that next time. Wish is known about adding the marmite too, I love marmite!

As I've always been a meat eater I've never ventured into quorn products before, I just assumed it was supposed to taste like meat. I saw southern fried chicken burgers, minted lamb burgers and whatnot so assumed this is what they were trying to taste like?

I like quorn. I do eat meat but sometimes I don't fancy it, meat can be very heavy in the stomach, quorn works when I want a 'meaty' recipe like spag bol in that situation. It doesn't taste just like meat / chicken, but it can taste good. It usually needs other flavourings e.g in spag bol I'd add a bit of marmite, soy sauce, or half a stock cube, and some tomato puree (as well as the usual onion, garlic etc).
Quorn sausages are pretty nice. Not all vegetarian sausages are though; I had some the other day that were rank.
I do eat pulses, nuts etc, but quorn has a useful place in my ingredient list too.

Selks · 10/08/2014 21:31

I suppose I'm just talking about the quorn mince or chunks, I haven't tried the 'lamb' burgers etc.

OnIlkleyMoorBahTwat · 10/08/2014 21:38

Only people with no tastebuds could ever confuse the two, but i've heard it said a lot.

The taste and texture of meat and quorn is completely different.

londonrach · 10/08/2014 21:46

Isn't quorn the food source that can make you very ill and banned in some states of America. (Question nothing else). Or is it something else. Mn please correct me
