To believe that no one can have ever possibly enjoyed the beach?

I've avoided the beach since taking my then 4 and 11 year old who are now 8 and 14. I had thought that four years was long enough to have recovered from the trauma and was actually looking forward to it but having now been here for an hour can't think of a single thing that is remotely enjoyable... The stickiness, the sand EVERYWHERE no decent toilets, the sun making you sleepy but you having no chance to close your eyes in case your children drown. Plus am hideously over weight this time so am fully clothed.
Am looking around and everyone else looks miserable too. Why do we do this???

Have lived opposite the beach for the past 25 years, it is amazing but I can nip back across the road to use my own loo! Seriously though I cannot imagine life without a daily visit to the beach but it is not obligatory!

Happybeard · 09/08/2014 14:54

"Dull as fuck" yes! That's it. I couldn't sleep, it's too hot. And boring.

He will take he for a swim later but there's nothing else for her to so so I feel a bit mean stopping her. Maybe it would be better if she had a sibling near her age.

To add to the sheer joy of it all, three gorgeous 20somethings with perfect bodies have just taken the spot right in front of us Hmm

YABU.

Ds1 loves the beach.

There's paddling, sand castles, rock pools, hunting for shells, wave jumping, lots of space to run around or play games (on the ones we go to anyway), ice cream...

beccajoh · 09/08/2014 14:57

Pebbly beaches are your friend.

iK8 · 09/08/2014 14:58

Blimey you sound a right old misery! Why don't you put your swimming costume on and go in the water to cool off?

Or build an epic sandcastle.

Or let someone bury you in cold wet sand to cool you down. Just watch the tide or it really will be your death bed..!

Wine & plastic cups would help Grin

YANBU

There is nothing wrong with a beach which couldnt be solved by tiling it, filtering the water and throwing in a handful chlorine.

I hate going to the beach.

TheFairyCaravan · 09/08/2014 15:07

I bloody hate the beach.

DH and I went to a fantastic hotel in Cape Verde in the Spring. It was built right on a beautiful beach so he mithered me all the time to go for a walk, or hobble in my case, on it.

The sand got bloody everywhere, we had to paddle, so it stuck to our bloody feet. For some strange reason I always end up with some in my mouth! Hmm.

I don't know what was wrong with lying on the lounger where we were and just looking at it!

ApplebyMennym · 09/08/2014 15:07

I'm hideously overweight and used to cover up at the beach. Until I realised nobody, not even perfect bodied 20 year olds, gives one shiny shit what I wear. I don't wear a bikini (I don't own one) but I will wear shorts and a vest top. I am miserable otherwise.

Happybeard · 09/08/2014 15:08

My husband has woken up and asked if I was having a good time Hmm

The elder one has gone in the sea with the younger one so I can close my eyes for a bit and think about all the other things I could be doing with my time

DH hates the beach with a passion. I like the beach, mostly how well the salt air makes me feel. The kids LOVE the beach.
So we are going to the seaside for our holidays, DH was out voted.
He hates sand, especially when it sticks to your feet, I find it a necessary evil to enjoy all the sand castle building fun.

Happybeard · 09/08/2014 15:09

Glad I'm not alone though ladies!!

Oh, go in for a swim. If you're abroad you won't see anyone from the school run!

Happybeard · 09/08/2014 15:09

Littleprincess we could do a wife swap!

I love the beach and think you sound boring! Why not paddle and watch your 8 year old swim? Why not bring an iPod and go for a walk? Ask your kids to douse you with water or just generally make something of the day! Sounds like you need to be entertained rather than make the fun yourself! Kids love the beach it's the perfect playground and your on holiday so you definitely need to lighten up!

flyingtrue · 09/08/2014 15:17

You could grab a bottle of prosecco and enjoy a chilled out glass? At the least, the 20 something's wouldn't both you anymore you would be enjoying the drink. And the sea s massive so it's not going to be a bother a bit of piss, if anything the marine life shits and shags in it a lot more often and at higher volume.

At least you have mumsnet :) And there's a wealth of weird, wonderful and eye gouging shit on youtube. Plus various blogs, some fiction sites...can all make for less boring. Or close you eyes and fantasise about 3 20-something young hunky men?

The only time I hated the beach was after having sex on one, sand really does grate in certain places.

Happybeard · 09/08/2014 15:17

This isn't a holiday ConfusedConfusedConfused

Oh do you live near the sea? Shame you feel that way then! I guess just make the best of it today and in future get your dh to take them!

WhenSheWasBadSheWasHorrid · 09/08/2014 15:24

The beach sucks. I live near a beach and everyone here is in agreement. The idea of a day on the beach is great but the reality is sand everywhere and boredom.

Maybe it will get better when the kids are older.
