To warn you all that Laura Ashley painted furniture is total crap and the company couldn't give a shit

I bought nearly £3k of bedroom furniture from Laura Ashley last year (the "Clifton" range). We researched carefully what to buy and as we have loads of LA stuff we thought we were buying quality and the huge outlay would be worth it. After a debacle over damaged furniture being delivered the last items, a dressing table and stool, were finally delivered last September. So far so ok, until I noticed last week that the paint was cracking and peeling on the legs of the dressing table and stool.

I sent pictures to Laura Ashley last week after notifying them over the telephone of the issue (and surprise surprise, they tried to make up reasons immediately as to why it might have happened, asking if the furniture was near a heat source or a window - which it isn't). I received an email earlier this week saying the pictures had been referred to their "technicians" for analysis, and today I had the following message:

"I am now in receipt of our Technicians findings following the
inspection of the photographs that you have submitted.

I have been advised that they consider the issues that you have raised
as treatment after purchase and the legs look like they have been
saturated and this has resulted in the wood and paint cracking.
Whilst I do sympathise, unfortunately, Laura Ashley is unable to accept
responsibility on this occasion, as your furniture is not considered to
be at fault."

I am utterly fuming. The furniture has been sitting on my bedroom carpet, the wood is not split in any way and it certainly hasn't had a sniff of water. I'll be taking this to court if necessary because there's no way they're getting away with this. DO NOT BUY THIS FURNITURE Angry

Don't back down OP! These companies rely on people not being able to fight back.

EverythingCounts · 13/08/2014 01:07

That's appalling service and I won't be buying from them and will tweet as much. Can recommend John Lewis for painted kids' beds. Give em hell OP! Wonder if the Guardian Money/Consumer champion column would print a letter from you? It's right up their street.

Chiana · 13/08/2014 01:32

Never buying from LA ever again, after having read the whole thread open mouthed. What appalling CS.

WallyBantersJunkBox · 13/08/2014 02:13

Don't get done, get Dom!

Chiana · 13/08/2014 02:19

Toothless, we too have had excellent customer service from Habitat.

YouGotTime · 13/08/2014 03:04

If it is their 'view that the paint flaking has not been caused by any
manufacturing defect' have they said to you what they think is causing the paint to flake?

mrsbrownsgirls · 13/08/2014 03:07

fight it all the way!

mycatlikestwiglets · 13/08/2014 06:34

All they've said is that they believe the furniture has been "saturated" YouGotTime. They haven't offered any explanation of how they consider this could have happened and I've been clear that it just isn't possible. It's one of the reasons I'll go to Court rather than the furniture ombudsman - what's the point in alternative dispute resolution if they refuse to engage properly with the complaint?

Rooners · 13/08/2014 08:15

The company knows that if this goes to litigation, the furniture will have to be inspected propery by someone who knows about furniture and that means they will have to refund you plus costs.

They are chancing their arm based on a knee jerk reaction to a couple of photographs, which also clearly show that the floor in your home is not, and has not been, flooded Hmm At first I thought 'water damage' but then I looked carefully and realised it clearly wasn't.

Do they know you are legally qualified?

What a bunch of shysters.

mycatlikestwiglets · 13/08/2014 08:26

If they've read this thread they'll know Rooners but I haven't told them so directly Wink

You may be wise to keep that card close to your chest Smile

Very best of luck. I think I speak for all of us here when I say I'll be rooting for you.

FunLovinBunster · 13/08/2014 11:38

Hi mycatlikestwiglets
I'm a non practicing legal bod too.
LAs blank refusal has pissed me right off. Clearly they have never heard of any of the consumer protection legislation regarding sales of goods and services.
I'm in a snotty mood so I shall tweet them again.
PLEASE WILL ANY OTHER MNETTERS TWEET TOO? Lets get #mycatlikestwiglets trending....

IceBeing · 13/08/2014 12:12

Goooooo mycat!

Best of luck OP, the shoddy attitude of LA has put me off ever purchasing from them again. It's not as though they're unique in the marketplace without much competition.

FWIW we have a room that was unused, a bit of a dumping ground that we just closed the door on. We decided to decorate, move the furniture around and start using it properly.
Two different lots of visitors have remarked on the newsofa and chairs in there, how nice they are and how comfortable. We bought them 28 years ago and they were in our main room for at least 15 of those exposed to all and everyone.

Our other sofas are ten years old and still in great condition.

I don't actually expect stuff to last for ever, but I certainly think if you treat your furniture well it shouldn't show such obvious defects in no time at all.
If it does develop a serious problem you'd certainly hope the company involved would get it sorted for you. Very poor show by LA Angry

FunLovinBunster · 13/08/2014 15:10

They're ignoring me on twitter.
Muppets.

mycatlikestwiglets · 13/08/2014 18:52

Like I said, they have their fingers in their ears. Thanks for being irate on my behalf though Fun! Will update thread if I hear anything from them.

That's disgusting. Hope you get some success op. I would never shop there...shocking customer service considering the price and clearly cheap manufacture.

thesaurusgirl · 14/08/2014 12:31

9 pages!

They really are shocking.

Utterly thick, too: how many people who knew nothing of Laura Ashley's shoddy products and appalling customer service before have now read this thread, and been warned away?

WallyBantersJunkBox · 14/08/2014 13:23

Totally ignoring me on Twitter and I've linked the thread.

Ailing Floral twats.

KnackeredMuchly · 14/08/2014 15:23

I just can't believe their PR. Someone should really lose their job over this thread. After 2 pages and so many negative comments they should have had a representative on this thread, grovelling.

What has put off me ever ordering is that there are so FEW people who've had a positive experience. Laura Ashley really don't care about good service.

WallyBantersJunkBox · 14/08/2014 15:57

Mignonette I am super impressed by your Twitter knowledge. I can barely manage a post. Blush

FunLovinBunster · 14/08/2014 16:25

I've tweeted again copying in Wales trading standards twitter too.
Fuckers.
Told them to "settle #mycatlikestwiglets #mumsnet #clifton furniture ref 300589. Shoddy customer service too #fail"
Fuckers.

jammietart · 14/08/2014 16:44

So are they deleting the tweets as soon as they are posted? can you do that?

I agree with all sentiment expressed by everyone on this thread - keep at them! And yo have inspired me to claim compensation for a travel problem we had a few months ago - was going to leave it as company looked after us and rebooked alternative but it did leave us out of pocket and it was completely their fault. So thank you!
