To warn you all that Laura Ashley painted furniture is total crap and the company couldn't give a shit

I bought nearly £3k of bedroom furniture from Laura Ashley last year (the "Clifton" range). We researched carefully what to buy and as we have loads of LA stuff we thought we were buying quality and the huge outlay would be worth it. After a debacle over damaged furniture being delivered the last items, a dressing table and stool, were finally delivered last September. So far so ok, until I noticed last week that the paint was cracking and peeling on the legs of the dressing table and stool.

I sent pictures to Laura Ashley last week after notifying them over the telephone of the issue (and surprise surprise, they tried to make up reasons immediately as to why it might have happened, asking if the furniture was near a heat source or a window - which it isn't). I received an email earlier this week saying the pictures had been referred to their "technicians" for analysis, and today I had the following message:

"I am now in receipt of our Technicians findings following the
inspection of the photographs that you have submitted.

I have been advised that they consider the issues that you have raised
as treatment after purchase and the legs look like they have been
saturated and this has resulted in the wood and paint cracking.
Whilst I do sympathise, unfortunately, Laura Ashley is unable to accept
responsibility on this occasion, as your furniture is not considered to
be at fault."

I am utterly fuming. The furniture has been sitting on my bedroom carpet, the wood is not split in any way and it certainly hasn't had a sniff of water. I'll be taking this to court if necessary because there's no way they're getting away with this. DO NOT BUY THIS FURNITURE Angry

Hi, I'd really appreciate some advice. Has anyone ever re-painted a Laura Ashley chest of drawers from the Provencale range? I've just bought a great chest of drawers from Gumtree but the top could really do with freshening up and I'm bamboozled by all the different shades of cream on the Laura Ashley website.

You'd probably be better off starting your own thread in a more appropriate topic glasgowmistybluegirl - possibly Chat would be better. This thread is a. old and b. not about repainting furniture so you might not get the answers you're looking for

What happened in the end?

Bought a sofa based on the advice of the store manager (a Worcester branch) that we would be able to wash the loose covers. We washed them and they shrank and streaked beyond use. We then double-checked the cushion covers for Care Instructions (there aren't any - despite Laura Ashley telling us repeatedly that there are) and their website (clear message that the intrinsic advantage of loose covers is that they can be washed) and their customer care line (argumentative and kept missing the point). They've charged us £64.50 for replacement cushion covers and remain adamant that we are at fault. Their shambolic response includes the rather brilliant line - "Our store managers are not furniture specialists".

ZOMBIEEEEE!!!

starkfraser Sounds like they may well be culpable. How do they now advise cleaning the covers?

How did Head Up go on with Laura Ashley furniture complaint?
My daughter ordered £2500 of furniture online from them a couple of years ago and it took six weeks to be delivered. She was given am delivery and took the morning off work and at 1.30 a tatty old 4x4 turned up with a surly unkempt chap in to say he was delivering, and when she said quite reasonably 'thank goodness I was beginning to think it wasn't being delivered' he threw a real strop and said he wasn't paid enough for this (?)and stormed off tyres smoking and took the furniture with him! My pregnant and very upset daughter rang LA numerous times to find out what had happened and couldn't get anywhere, and she never saw the furniture again and was told she'd have to wait another six weeks as it would have to be re-ordered! She cancelled and we never shop there now!
Shame as it used to be such a prestige brand.

What possesses someone to update a 5 year old thread with a an anecdote that is itself two years old?
