Is this really such a bad breakfast for a 1 YO?

My mum asked me 'just out of interest' what I fed my 1 YO DD for breakfast.

Her breakfast is generally always the same, a banana, a slice of wholemeal toast with butter and a beaker of whole milk.

Her dinner and tea time meals are always very healthy and varied.

Mum seemed shocked and said she could've believe that I fed my child 'that dross' for breakfast. I always thought it was fairly healthy bu now just left feeling a little unaccomplished

Sounds fine. I'd switch it up some days, add egg or different fruit. Porridge is good and you can add frozen berries to cool it and make it extra healthy/ yummy.

Tbh ds1 always got cereal or porridge with a banana. Toast is a snack when he gets to play group or nursery.

Your mum sounds like a cow. Are you sure you didn't say deep friend mars bars?

Logarhythm · 08/08/2014 09:35

I would try to vary it if you can, same thing every day may be all the child will eat but it's not the healthiest approach.

bigkidsdidit · 08/08/2014 09:36

What's wrong with the same thing every day if it's fruit and toast and milk? Sounds fine to me.

Millie3030 · 08/08/2014 09:36

A banana is really good, maybe mix it up, and alternate maybe Weetabix, /porridge something with a little less salt than bread. Not that toast is bad, I give my little guy toast occasionally. But I'm always ravenous an hour after toast where as porridge is more filling.

You could also change the fruit, some days blueberries or strawberries maybe?

OnlyLovers · 08/08/2014 09:36

She can get to fuck. a) it's fine and b) it's not her business even if you did feed your child 'dross'.

KnackeredMuchly · 08/08/2014 09:37

That sounds great to me! Variety is good but you didnt tell your Mum that's all he ever eats!

milkysmum · 08/08/2014 09:37

I think that sounds like a perfectly healthy breakfast! Did your mum say what she though dd should be having for breakfast?

TeWiSavesTheDay · 08/08/2014 09:37

It's completely fine and your mum needs to mind her own.

Deluge · 08/08/2014 09:39

Its a perfectly healthy breakfast. If your child eats it happily, I wouldn't even bother about varying it. You can vary other meals.

What would she suggest as an alternative?

Your Mum sounds bonkers, how can toast, milk and fruit be 'dross'?

EverythingCounts · 08/08/2014 09:42

That's absolutely fine. I don't see the need to vary it. I eat pretty much the same breakfast every day, most people I know do. It's other meals that tend to vary more.

I would tell your mum that it's fine and that she should save her comments for the people who can't be bothered to sort breakfast for their kids at all, or who just chuck them a packet of crisps.

micah · 08/08/2014 09:45

It depends what she means by "that dross" :)

Either you mum thinks she should be on hand knitted muesli, quinoa porridge and lentils.

Or (more likely ime), she thinks wholemeal toast and a banana is boring and tasteless and she should be on a varied diet of Cheerios, coco pops, honey nut loops, and jam on white bread.

Did you ask what she thought your dd should be on? And why fruit is "dross"?

NickiFury · 08/08/2014 09:47

There's nothing wrong with that breakfast at all, she is being ridiculous.

KnockMeDown · 08/08/2014 09:47

deep friend mars bars

I would like to try these Grin

But seriously, another one saying that's fine! My DD is 4 and can be quite fickle with her food, so when I find something that works, I stick with it!

Crystalballs · 08/08/2014 09:48

What does your mum suggest for breakfast? Sounds fine to me.

silversixpence · 08/08/2014 09:49

That is a perfectly good breakfast, if be delighted if my 1 year old reliably had that for breakfast (toast and cereal and porridge refuser)

toomanypasswords · 08/08/2014 09:49

My DD's 'varied' breakfast tastes are either weetabix and a cup of milk or toast (with butter only) and a cup of milk with the occasional yogurt thrown in for good measure! Sounds fine to me.

ChoccaDoobie · 08/08/2014 09:50

How odd! Why did she call it "dross"? That sounds completely fine. Ignore!

FunkyBoldRibena · 08/08/2014 09:50

What was she suggesting?

KleineDracheKokosnuss · 08/08/2014 09:52

Sounds fine and healthy to me. In our house we alternate between (1) a yoghurt and a slice of toast with either butter or marmalade, and (2) muesli with yoghurt.

So long as your child has a varied diet overall, you are doing fine.

notagainffffffffs · 08/08/2014 09:52

Mine has peanut butter sandwich, blue berries and an orange and big cup of milk :) shes fine!

MyFairyKing · 08/08/2014 09:53

It sounds perfectly normal. I thought you were going to say something like a packet of crisps!

weebarra · 08/08/2014 09:55

Sounds fine. What was she suggesting instead?
