Is this really such a bad breakfast for a 1 YO?

My mum asked me 'just out of interest' what I fed my 1 YO DD for breakfast.

Her breakfast is generally always the same, a banana, a slice of wholemeal toast with butter and a beaker of whole milk.

Her dinner and tea time meals are always very healthy and varied.

Mum seemed shocked and said she could've believe that I fed my child 'that dross' for breakfast. I always thought it was fairly healthy bu now just left feeling a little unaccomplished

Sounds like a perfectly good breakfast to me - if your DD is happy with it then there's no need to change. I have a bowl of the same cereal every day, orange juice and coffee - I like the routine and not having to think about what to have!

fanjobiscuits · 08/08/2014 10:00

Sounds fine, nothing wrong with that. It has carbs, fat and fruit. I would maybe add some protein (egg/cheese?) and would also mix up the fruit and offer different things sometimes so baby learns to eat different things.

But seems pretty good anyway.

What was your mum's issue with it?

Tinkerball · 08/08/2014 10:02

Did you ask her what she thought was wrong with it?

Olbas · 08/08/2014 10:37

Ask her what she used to feed you at that age. When she tells you, nod and do a pained expression and say "oh that it explains it then" and refused to discuss!

mommy2ash · 08/08/2014 11:04

nothing at all wrong with that breakfast. my dd had a croissant with nutella this morning she would probably have me strung up lol

justanotherbiscuit · 08/08/2014 11:26

ask your mum what super duper breakfast she fed you as a baby!

It's Fine. My lo has that for breakfast quite often (white bread for her though as brown makes her constipated, pediatricians advice). Mainly if I know she's having meat and veg for lunch and dinner that day.

if I knew she was having say scrambled egg on toast for lunch, she'd have fruit salad and Greek yoghurt for breakfast. So she's not having too much salt and bread.

seriously though- people feed their kids pop tarts and sugar puffs everyday , tell her that for fun Grin

Cheeky76890 · 08/08/2014 11:43

What does your mum want you to feed DD?

Cheeky76890 · 08/08/2014 11:44

What does your mum want you to feed DD?

We tend to have wheat once a day only as its not great. What you describe is an ok breakfast. You could mix it up a bit. Porridge or eggs

ICanSeeTheSun · 08/08/2014 11:47

Breakfast is a busy time, getting ready for the day and if it makes the morning rotine easy I'm in favour for. It's not like you are giving her a double sausage and egg Mcmuffin meal with a coffee.

RiverTam · 08/08/2014 11:48

what does she think he should be having, a full English?

Sounds alright to me though I prefer to avoid bread at breakfast for DD, as it's often part of lunch and I don't really want 2 'bready' meals a day, if possible.

fluffymouse · 08/08/2014 11:48

Personally I would change the toast to porridge/ready brek. Toast has little nutritional value.

ShadowStar · 08/08/2014 11:49

Sounds fine to me.

What does she think is wrong with it?

Trollsworth · 08/08/2014 11:49

I wouldn't give whole meal toast as too much fibre can interfere with vitamin absorption. I'd actually give white, well buttered. I'd give cheese or egg with it too, for protein, but with a beaker of milk it makes a pretty good breakfast - what does your mother think is wrong with it?

Deelish75 · 08/08/2014 11:49

Sounds fine to me and your DD clearly likes it, enjoys it.

Does your mum often ask you questions and then criticise the answer?

Fairylea · 08/08/2014 11:52

That's absolutely fine!

CouldntGiveAMonkeysToss · 08/08/2014 11:57

Nothing wrong with that breakfast! Sounds like she's just looking for a way to put you down. Do she do that a lot?

Lovelydiscusfish · 08/08/2014 12:00

Gosh, it is much healthier than what my dd gets at nursery (and sometimes at home, if I'm honest!)
Am quite charmed by your mum's use of the word "dross", though. Haven't heard it for ages, and don't think I have ever heard it applied to foodstuffs! I am going to try to use it in this context more often (without upsetting anyone or making them question their parenting, obviously).

DayLillie · 08/08/2014 12:01

That's what I had for breakfast Grin

Perfect Wink

PurpleFeather · 08/08/2014 12:01

Sounds fine to me.

Lovelydiscusfish · 08/08/2014 12:02

And Fairylea, your ds's brekkers is making my mouth water!

specialsubject · 08/08/2014 12:38

she's the ignorant one, not you.

ignore the ignorant.

Fairylea · 08/08/2014 12:38

:) @ Lovely.

I will admit that is quite a one off! He's been a bit under the weather and that's all he was interested in eating. Sometimes a bit of what you fancy does you good....!

SaucyJack · 08/08/2014 12:41

Ignore. It's exactly the sort of thing my mum would say.

She gave us Frosties......

however · 08/08/2014 12:46

When my daughter she was 1 she had exactly the same, except without the toast. She was fine with just a banana.

bleedingheart · 08/08/2014 12:53

What alternative does she suggest?
