to think that the Harry Potter are timeless literature and the films are woefully miscast?

Inflammatory title to draw you in. I hope. I just fancied some HP chat. Smile

I'm re-watching the films at the moment. Is it me or is there something old-ladyish about Alan Rickman's mouth? I realize I am thinking about this far too hard, and I know it's practically forbidden to speak ill of him on MN. But every time I see those films, I'm disappointed again that he just isn't as sexy as his voice.

I also think the Burrow looks all wrong to me. I love what they do with the reeds in the scene where Bellatrix taunts Harry and he and Ginny run after her. But I imagined the Burrow being rural and farmland-ish, with an overgrown garden around it - not plonked down in the middle of a marsh. Am I right?

What's your favourite bit of the films/books?

have you all read the extra content about Dumbledore's army at the 2014 Quidditch World Cup on Pottermore? It's quite interesting :)

LRD I'm sadly lacking in fanfic recs these days but have you read Sara's girl and snegurotchka lee? SG is mostly DM/HP and SL is RL/SS but they are both wonderful writers.

Phoenixwoman · 05/08/2014 19:23

Just order the full box set of films for critical comparison purposes thinking I only had one if the series, just found PS, OOTP and GOF plus DH 2 and HBP on the planner, oops

saras-girl.livejournal.com
The wonderful Sara's girl. Everything she writes is amazing. She does write only slash though.

Bless you, maryz. Is it because you are tremendously venerable? Wink

(Kidding! Though I don't know how you've been on MN this long and not heard it mentioned).

Thank you for recs. maryz, I struggle with HP fanfic because there's so much of it and 99% of it is absolutely, cringily awful. That still leaves plenty of funny stuff, but ..!

You may be sceptical but give it a try, it really works!

Perhaps she lives at Hogwarts too and commutes to Hogsmeade?

It must be really weird starting to teach at a school with lots of your old teachers still there.

MoominKoalaAndMiniMoom · 05/08/2014 22:55

I used to write HP fanfic Grin no idea where it is now...

NuggetofPurestGreen · 05/08/2014 23:06

polka no, Leaky Cauldron is in London not Hogsmeade so quite far. (Three Broomsticks is the pub in Hogsmeade). According to the new story they both live in LC so he must commute! She's moving to Hogwarts though possibly.

Neville Longbottom, now a popular Herbology teacher at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, is here in Patagonia with his wife Hannah. Until recently the pair lived above the Leaky Cauldron in London, but rumour has it that Hannah has not only retrained as a Healer, but is applying for the job of Matron at Hogwarts.

They apparate!

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 06/08/2014 00:20

The school year always starts on 1st September with the train to Hogwarts. The following breakfast they are issued with and begin timetabled lessons.

So do they just not pay attention to weekday/weekend days?

dancestomyowntune · 06/08/2014 07:54

where do you find all these extra stories? i want to read them!!!

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 06/08/2014 07:56

Oh sorry, wrong pub!

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 06/08/2014 09:01

I write some HP fanfic, normally Lucius Malfoy and my OC who happens to Sirius Blacks daughter, Blush

TalcumPowder · 06/08/2014 09:55

There have been a trickle of HP fan-fic writers who have crossed over to print publishing, mostly in Young Adult/fantasy. Sara Rees-Brennan, who was quite the BNF in HP, ditto Cassandra Claire, and Naomi Novik (though I think she wrote mostly Master and Commander fic). Not to mention the horror that is 50 Shades of Grey, which wears its origins in Twilight fan fic very obviously on its sleeve.

DrankSangriaInThePark · 06/08/2014 10:02

Dd and I watched DH1 last night and I proudly pointed out to her Moody saying The BurrowS thanks to this thread. (and now we've all discussed her for days, Ginny seems to be getting worse, not only no acting at all, but never a change in facial expression either, just staring into space always)

Two further questions: You know in DH2, all that hoohah about the elder wand, and its rightful owner? And it's all something to do with Harry having disarmed Draco at Malfoy Manor? Which in turn is something to do with Dumbledore dying? I realise I don't understand!!!! Harry is the rightful owner of the elder wand because???? Dd says it's to do with disarming not killing and that's why he killed Snape? To get ownership of the elder wand. Is that right? But he couldn't, because it wasn't Snape's at that point but Draco's.

And, in light of me telling dd all these snippets from here, is there a child friendly list of extra information/continuity errors somewhere? Obv do not wish dd to find herself perusing shagging-centaurs websites!

slithytove · 06/08/2014 10:16

Elder wand

Dumbldore won it in battle from Grindelwald.
Draco Malfoy won it by disarming Dumbledore - now has the allegiance of this and his original wand.
Wand buried with Dumbledore
Voldemort pinches it - it does not switch allegiance as no magical domination.
Harry disarms Draco - ALL of Dracos wands including the elder wand switch allegiance.
Voldemort assumes Snape has control of the elder wand as he killed Dumbledore. So he kills Snape. He was wrong.
Therefore it won't turn on Harry or any other wand Harry controls.

The wand switching allegiance is to do with magical domination of the current 'owner' rather than a physical ownership, or killing.

This is my understanding anyway!

FoxSticks · 06/08/2014 10:19

That's my understanding too Slithy, although I always thought the whole disarming draco and gaining control of all his wands was a bit shaky logic wise.
