To wonder why there are no sanctions being placed on Israel?

Sorry if I sound a bit thick, but I genuinely don't understand this? They are placing sanctions on Russia following the Mh17 attack, and that's a good thing, but Israel are repeatedly attacking and persecuting another group of people, killing children and no one is doing anything about it? I don't understand why? Some of the photos of the poor child victims of this conflict keep appearing on my Twitter and Facebook feeds and they are just too horrific for words, the hospitals have now run out of mortuary space and they are storing bodies in ice cream freezers in shops. It's so, so terrible.

Why are the world letting them get away with this? It's making me so bloody angry.

Everyone:

E-mail your MP. Tell her/him you want them to back the call for a re-call of Parliamnent.

They are hiding at the moment.

Make our representatives choose. They can demand sanctions, they can vote for sanctions - or they can VISIBLY show us their complicity.

It's time we called our elected representatives to account.

Re-call Parliament.

JellyDiamond · 03/08/2014 15:12

I can't believe that a nation who's people have been treated so appallingly by others in the past are behaving in this way.

firstchoice · 03/08/2014 16:01

OK.
So, is that the best way to express our disgust, do you think?

To email MP and ask for Parliament to be recalled?

I am up for it!

ziggiestardust · 03/08/2014 16:16

spring I never said they were right, I said they were sympathetic to the west, and they have high military strength. Strategically, they're in a good position for the US/UK/other western powers. So that's why a blind eye is being turned to it.

ziggiestardust · 03/08/2014 16:19

first and what will they do?! Parliament wouldn't take a blind bit of notice! They don't give a damn about the hold abuse scandal, where British children and other vulnerable groups (and possibly even dead people) were horribly abused. They didn't give a shit about Syria. They didn't give a shit about Sri Lanka. Why on earth anyone thinks anything will be done is beyond me.

In a few weeks, news coverage will shift and the government will jangle some keys in front of the public to distract us. And people will forget, and go about their normal lives.

OhBuggerandArse · 03/08/2014 16:23

Because we are complicit in the crimes being committed, as we were in Iraq. It's not the world letting them get away with it - we are them. We are implicated. We are at fault.

thecatfromjapan · 03/08/2014 16:28

And if they don't do anything we can then choose to hold them to account. MPs generally try not to do things that alienate their voters - LOTS of us are disgusted by what is happening in Gaza.
They are also human - many will not happily commit a public act that marks them as complicit/by-standers to an act of slaughter.
They are not stupid - how they vote for action to condemn this carnage won't just pursue them to the next election, it will haunt them as individuals for years.
That is why we cannot let them just hide away, and hide how they know they should ACT.
We NEED a recall of parliament.

I would also urge people not to slip into hopelessness and apathy - despair leads to anger and/ or doing nothing. And that will not help Gaza.

thecatfromjapan · 03/08/2014 16:31

Seriously, e-mail your MP and ask for a re-call and attend the demonstration this coming Saturday.
These things keep you same in the face of the unbearable, make you realise how widespread is the condemnation, and show the people of Gaza they are not forgotten.
It matters.

FunLovinBunster · 03/08/2014 16:44
  1. The allies created Israel. Doing anything to stop Israel would mean that US UK etc would have to admit responsibility for fucking up the MEast.
  2. Oil. Allies need a friendly country in MEast.
  3. Arms sales. US has just sent off another shipment that will probably be used by Israel destroy whats left of Palestine territory.
  4. Votes. Jewish votes worth £££ and power. Also there are many Jewish people in powerful positions who would not countenance action against Israel.
  5. Nuclear weapons. Stupidly allies allowed Israel to arm themselves.
Springheeled · 03/08/2014 16:46

ziggie apologies to have misinterpreted you, sorry.

ziggiestardust · 03/08/2014 16:47

Not at all Thanks

SqueakySqueak · 03/08/2014 16:56

Didn't you get the memo? As long as it's little Muslim children being slaughter, it's all ok.

nevereverpost · 03/08/2014 17:02

Votes. Jewish votes worth £££ and power. Also there are many Jewish people in powerful positions who would not countenance action against Israel

And then people brand those who feel being anti-Israel equates/leads being anti-Semitic as objectionably paranoid. It's offensive shit like this that gives rise to those very concerns Funlovin and derails otherwise reasonable debate. Not nice.

Andro · 03/08/2014 17:02

What's happening in Gaza must qualify as war crimes, surely? Not to mention that Israel is in contravention of so many UN resolutions it's ludicrous.

As for bombing UN refuges, how they can even attempt to justify that is beyond me (rockets coming from nearby? Not. Good. Enough.)

edamsavestheday · 03/08/2014 17:21

they are clearly war crimes.

saying there is a powerful pro-Israel camp is NOT antisemitic. It is a fact. Especially in the US.

nevereverpost · 03/08/2014 17:32

if that is aimed me, show me where I said it was. If it isn't: many apologies!

What I did day was that remarks like Funlovin's point 4 which crashed straight from Israel/Palestine to talk of Jewish people being powerful and wealthy is the sort of thing that makes people think that being Jewish and Israeli are interchangeable. Being unable/unwilling to differentiate or using one to justify the other IS anti-Semitic There are many many Jewish people who are against what Israel is currently doing along the Gaza strip

Backinthering · 03/08/2014 17:33

Yes. War crimes. Boycott, sanctions and divestment. Unfortunately, with our glorious leaders still barely able to muster up so much as a whisper of condemnation, that seems a far-away dream at the moment.

FunLovinBunster · 03/08/2014 17:38

For the record I am have Jewish ancestry on my mothers side.

nevereverpost · 03/08/2014 17:40

So am/have I. What's your point? Offensive shit is offensive shit, whoever says it.

TheLovelyBoots · 03/08/2014 17:47

Israel's behavior has been bad by even their standards during this latest incursion. The US serves as a supplier of pretexts for war to Israel, pinning whatever they like on Hamas without any sort of fact checks. No one ever calls them out on it.

2 out of 99 senators voted against rushing through $250 million in military aid to Israel. On top of the 3 billion they already give them annually. Here is the enemy - the US.

FrankSaysNo · 03/08/2014 17:51

It is very difficult to find an unbiased yet simple over view of the situation. I tried and it encompassed 2,000 years. Not really what I was looking for, I don't have the time to sift, read, and process lengthy articles like that.

Please do come and correct me if have grabbed the wrong end of the stick - this recent heightening of hostilities started Mid June with Hamas kidnapping 3 Israeli teenagers and they were murdered. I want to make it quite clear I am not apportioning blame, the whole thing has gone tit-for-tat and now its utterly out of control.

I saw this on FB and it is simplistic and it resonated with me:

There was once a regime that invaded another's land. They herded a minority group into a small area and then built a wall around it to contain them. Afterward they set about annihilating the minority group, eventually sending in troops and tanks to blast and kill. This became famous as the Warsaw Ghetto. Who would have thought that 70 years on the descendants of that minority would inflict the same on another people while the world's leaders look on. Stand up for Palestine.

TheLovelyBoots · 03/08/2014 18:02

Not true. They were not working under Hamas's instruction or knowledge.

Of course, 2 Palestinian boys were shot dead a month previous, but note that didn't make much news.

Yruapita · 03/08/2014 18:06

If we can email and ask to recall parliament will they do that? I shall email. Just emailed.

specialsubject · 03/08/2014 18:10

wow, this thread actually has brought the 'too many Jews in power' lot from out under their stone.

too ignorant to know the difference between Israel and Judaism, folks?
