hi i was just sitting here thinking that these commonwealth games are not much more than the home nation,s competing against each other and are giving the athletes the impression they are world class .i mean no america in athletics .no america /russia in gymnastics .sorry but i think its not been great .and i am scottish .and we should not be having a rebel song masking as a national anthem .great song at new year but not on when english competetor standing beside them .

OP posts:

Jamaica, Kenya and Australia are such minor athletics nations?! Along with Nigeria, England, Scotland and South Africa?!

Puzzling OP, puzzling.

TrickoftheMind · 02/08/2014 00:15

Yep YABU. It's not the Olympics, it's never claimed to be the Olympics. It has, however, been great.
Perhaps you could find something else to project your miserableness on, because the commonwealth games are doing just fine without you. Find another parade to piss on.
HTH

RonaldMcDonald · 02/08/2014 00:18

Ditto excellent, inspiring gymnasts

JohnCusacksWife · 02/08/2014 00:20

YABVU, these games have been wonderful. The atmosphere in Glasgow has been amazing and the entire city is buzzing and vibrant. At the risk of sounding a bit "Darius" theres a lot of love in the city just now. And the competition has been great. To say it only involves the home nations shows a breathtaking lack of awareness/respect/common sense. We were at Hampden the other night and saw David Rudisha & David Weir. And that was just a preliminary session. Not good enough for you?

I'm no fan of FoS but to call it a rebel song is just weird. Personally I'd go for Scots Wha Hae.

You seem embarrassed to be Scottish, OP. Are you?

RonaldMcDonald · 02/08/2014 00:21

I once won a thing for Norn Iron
I expected God Save the Queen but got LondonDerry Aire

weebarra · 02/08/2014 00:24

I think it's been great. I'm a weegie who's been transplant eastwards, and even the Edinburghers are loving these games. I was driving back from seeing my team play football last night and even Radio 4 were doing a big piece from Glasgow.

LilyBolero · 02/08/2014 00:27

I'd rather have Flower of Scotland than Jerusalem - And did those feet? No they didn't! Was Jerusalem builded (it's BUILT!!) here - no, it wasn't!

That is the whole point!!! That none of those things happened, and so it is up to us, the English to 'build Jerusalem' here in England. Because those feet DIDN'T come here. If that makes sense.

WRT gymnasts - they are truly amazing, and the GB girls came into this on the back of team silver medals at the European Championships having BEATEN the Russians. Beckie Downie was gold medallist in the uneven bars, Russia in silver and bronze.

World Class? I think so!

McFox · 02/08/2014 00:27

I think it's been brilliant and I don't like sport at all! I'm just back from a day out at Glasgow Green and the atmosphere was fantastic. I met some of the Canadian team and they were saying that they've had a brilliant time which makes me very proud - Glasgow has done a great job!

Sapat · 02/08/2014 00:28

It has been on non-stop in our household, there seems to be almost continuous coverage on TV, so pretty big deal. Obviously it is not the same as Olympics, but why should it?
I love Flower of Scotland and Jerusalem :)

RandomFriend · 02/08/2014 00:35

YABU - the gymnastics has been a lovely competition with some world-class performances.

Raahh · 02/08/2014 00:38

I haven't watched much of the games really, (the dcs have taken over the tvHmm) but today I saw a man who won a weightlifting gold for a country called Kiribati. I had to look up where Kiribati was.

He was delighted, he had trained for this, come half way around the world to participate. The first medal anyone from his country has ever got. Possibly ever will. He has lived away from his home for the past 4 years to go to the Commonwealth games. He hasn't been home for 4 YEARS. That's what the Games are about for me really.

Sp1rals · 02/08/2014 00:51

Yeah the Derry Air.

GatoradeMeBitch · 02/08/2014 01:15

I'm sure you've been set straight by now OP, but you are being VU. The Americans aren't the only nation who are good at sports. Many of the gold medal winners from the Olympics are taking part here. I can't think of any event suffering from lack of Americans, quite honestly.

sashh · 02/08/2014 01:19

Imagine having to sprint net to Usain Bolt - such a disappointment there are no Americans.

I mean there's probably no point going to a European championship either, no Americans and when it comes to swimming no Australians either.

As for the gymnastics - yes a vault with a difficulty of 7.0 is nothing is it? Anyone could do that.

GatoradeMeBitch · 02/08/2014 01:38

Just to add, I've been enjoying the Commonwealth Games as much as I enjoyed the Olympics (except it's a shame rowing and tennis aren't included). I've set my alarm for the women's road racing tomorrow, Emma Pooley's last race Sad

I think the games have been great. It's fab to see so many athletes from countries who you don't see in the Olympics. I also love watching the netball and can't believe that it isn't in the Olympics.
I would rather watch the likes of our young athletes such as Jodi Williams, world class athletes such as Okagbare and Athletes from countries like Lesotho than watch people like Gatlin and Tyson Gay from the USA who have been banned from the sport several times.

lljkk · 02/08/2014 08:38

I think it's fantastic that some of the world's elite aren't there. It allows athletes from smaller countries to shine, and so many of them have produced personal bests when able to race against some of the world's elite. I like seeing Rwanda-Malaysia-St. Lucia given an equal chance.

It doesn't seem as corrupt as the Olympics, either. Bonus.

AlpacaLypse · 02/08/2014 08:46

Just been looking up lyrics to a couple of potential English Anthems.

I vow to thee my country (1926 version) (Music, arrangement of Gustav Holst's Jupiter)

I vow to thee, my country, all earthly things above,
Entire and whole and perfect, the service of my love;
The love that asks no question, the love that stands the test,
That lays upon the altar the dearest and the best;
The love that never falters, the love that pays the price,
The love that makes undaunted the final sacrifice.

I heard my country calling, away across the sea,
Across the waste of waters she calls and calls to me.
Her sword is girded at her side, her helmet on her head,
And round her feet are lying the dying and the dead.
I hear the noise of battle, the thunder of her guns,
I haste to thee my mother, a son among thy sons.

And there's another country, I've heard of long ago,
Most dear to them that love her, most great to them that know;
We may not count her armies, we may not see her King;
Her fortress is a faithful heart, her pride is suffering;
And soul by soul and silently her shining bounds increase,
And her ways are ways of gentleness, and all her paths are peace.

The sentiment is fairly clearly of its time, only a few years after the Great War, and three verses is too many. But the tune is fantastic and there's potential there with a bit of judicious alteration of words?

Trooperslane · 02/08/2014 08:52

I'm in Glasgow too and it's been fucking fantastic.

Yabvvvvu April.

HappyAgainOneDay · 02/08/2014 10:31

Struggling Londonderry Air (Danny Boy).

HappyAgainOneDay · 02/08/2014 10:32

Thanks, Wriggle You beat me. I've only just got back here.

HappyAgainOneDay · 02/08/2014 10:34

Sorry everyone about NI. I've been away and missed it all fro the Opening Ceremony to yesterday. I haven't heard NI mentioned once so thought it wasn't there.

Idontseeanyicegiants · 02/08/2014 10:38

YABU it's been actually really good despite me being all sported out this year I've finally got into it Smile
Not so sure about the opening ceremony but Glasgow are doing an excellent hosting job and the coverage has been spectacular.
I vow to thee my country always makes me well up.. So does Jerusalem if it's done well.

HappyAgainOneDay · 02/08/2014 11:22

Yes, there are relevant potential anthems out there that would be better than GSTQ. I think its problem if any is that it's soooo slow and dirgelike. There's no 'gusto' in it - no emotion felt.
