To drink two bottles of red wine on my own at the weekend?

I drink three large glasses on a Friday, from 6pm - 11pm. Then another three on a Saturday again between 6-11pm. Then the remainder - around 2 glasses on a Sunday night. I don't drink alcohol Monday - Thursday and I class myself as a pretty healthy fit person. Am I unreasonable to drink this amount by myself?

I hardly think that drinking a few bottles a few times a week is 'taking up police time' or that it's a given that you will drive pissed as a fart.

Drinkers and smokers pay huge amounts in taxes to support the NHS.

You could criticise rock climbers or cycling nuts who need rescuing/break legs or surfers. It's called live and let live.

A few bottles a few times a week?? Fucking hell, that's a lot of alcohol Shock

And yes, tax from alcohol goes into the public coffers, but it doesn't shore up the NHS - nowhere near.

It is indeed.

Though many will think its absolutely fine because that's the culture we live in.

I struggle to see exactly what drinking that much could add to your life.

There are better ways to relax.

Is it a confidence thing? Habit?

grocklebox · 30/07/2014 21:54

Or maybe they think its fine...because they think its fine? And thats really all there needs to be to it.

People drink alcohol because they like it. Sometimes its thats simple.

The French drink a lot of wine - I know this for a fact as when I visit my cousin in France we start early Grin

Bunbaker · 30/07/2014 21:57

And the French also have a much higher incidence of cirrhosis of the liver.

Frontier · 30/07/2014 22:29

Is that true Bun? I always thought the French were cited as "healthy" drinkers compared to the British

SolidGoldBrass · 30/07/2014 22:40

If you're hurting other people or letting them down because you're too pissed/hungover to fulfill your obligations, it's a problem.
If you're endangering other people (because you're driving while drunk, or deciding to cook chips while drunk and setting fire to the kitchen) it's a problem.
If you are damaging your health... it's no one else's problem. Lots of people do things that carry risk and aren't strictly necessary, such as mountain climbing, having tattoos, eating/drinking/smoking more than is good for optimum health. But we own our bodies. They do not belong to the government, or our families, or someone else's imaginary friend. They belong to us - and they're going to end up as fertilizer eventually, anyway.
It's a very bad idea to start whining that the NHS ought to make moral judgements and exclude whole groups of people from access to healthcare.

Bunbaker · 30/07/2014 22:43

It was something I read some time ago. I have been googling to find information to back up my statement and the most recent stuff is from last year, but it refers to statistics from 2009. So I don't know whether it is still true.

Happydaysatlastforthebody · 30/07/2014 23:09

Solid as ever absolutely and totally agree with your post.

MomOfTwoGirls2 · 30/07/2014 23:17

OP, are you concerned because of potential future health issues, or because you think you have an problem with alcohol.
If you are worried about health, you should cut down. At least a bit.

ICanSeeTheSun · 30/07/2014 23:32

Just have the 1 glass then :)

I think your wine intake is fine but if you're worried about it switch to slightly smaller glasses or just tip a bit down the sink (or freeze in ice cubes, if you don't want to waste it...you can add the cubes to gravy) so that you can't drink as much.

Rocktheboat73 · 31/07/2014 00:29

Wow, all these responses, thanks all, they make really interesting reading. The amount of drinking I do has no effect on my life over the weekend, I get up early and exercise on a Saturday morning, on a Sunday I spend the day doing the usual domestic admin and food shopping, and Monday I get into work early and function well with a pretty responsible job - all with no hangover or side effects from the alcohol.

My 'poison' is a New Zealand Pinot, I drink because I really enjoy and appreciate the taste of the wine, I don't drink to get drunk.

Saying that though, and taking all these comments on board I am going to cut down to one bottle a weekend, just to see how I feel over the weekend drinking less.
